I started having some health issues in the last few months so I haven't been keeping up: is Carsen Edwards still the lone recruit for the 2016 class? If so, there should still be two schollies available next season. Is there anyone on the radar? A general description of the two additions I would like the Boilers to make are a quick, offensive multi-threat @ the 1 or 2 (yes, another player @ that position) and an athletic and versatile forward (combo-forward). I have faith in Haas and Swanigan sticking around so I think Taylor and them can man the 5 next season. I don't care if the newcomers are true freshman, JUCO transfers, DI transfers of any kind, or overseas prep prospects (when will CMP get someone like that), just as long as they can make the grade and can mesh with their teammates or coaches. Being talented is a plus, too. Boiler Up

The only name I've heard recently is Desmond Bane out of Richmond. He's kind of blown up this high school season and I know Purdue has watched him (haven't offered yet). 2* 6'5" SG with a few MAC offers. Haven't seen him so I can't comment.

My guess is that we may look at JUCOs and/or 5th year transfers. Never can tell what may shake loose there.

I would pass - seems like a nice kid but...my son's single A school played them earlier this season and shut him down / fouled him out. Athletic - but no real outside shot - lives on drives to the basket against smaller opponents.
Just one game but he did not seem at all Big Ten caliber. Just my limited take.

I'm really concerned with this class. One undersized guard will not cut it. With te mild success of the last couple of yrs and getting biggie this yr I hoped this would continue. I'm afraid we'll look back on this yr and say darn that was a team. Saying that I hope I am so wrong.

I don't understand why people don't take a couple of seconds to look it up before posting that a guy can't shoot. Took me a couple of seconds to find his stats.

Agree, I think Coach Painter has found it useful to our team to bring in quality grad transfers. Everyone keeps saying 2017 is a monster class, so it may be even more likely he goes the grad transfer route to round out 2016 recruiting.

Your son must play for University. I wouldn't say that team shut him down, maybe the officials. Lol. Look at his stats in every game BUT that one and tell me I'm wrong. I was there. It was criminal. Now whethe he's Big Ten material or not remains to be seen, but I sure wouldn't base it off that game.

I was there too - every foul called was an easy one to make - and they took him out of his game.
Nothing criminal about it - called excellent defense.
I said it was my limited take - jump me if it makes you feel better.

To be frank I am not really concerned about the next year's team. We have been spoiled by having two 7 footers last two years, but just having ONE 7 footer is actually a luxury in college. MSU, who usually have their pick of recruits doesn't have one. Even IU has none this year. Most college centers are usually not as tall, which also is the case for many NBA teams.

Next year we will have Haas/Swanigan/Taylor/Edwards rotation for 5 and 4, with Edwards also starting AND splitting time at 3 with Smotherman. Stephens can also play some time at 3 depending on the rotation, which still won't affect much in guard positions.

Now the trouble is with the years after that. If Haas and Swanigan develop as planned, they will be gone then. Only Taylor will be the sole post player if we don't recruit anyone that year. If that happens we will be back to being a guards-oriented team, and a few rebuilding/struggling years may not be so far behind. But we also have to remember the reason we couldn't really pick up anyone in 2016: we are too loaded at every position to be attractive. So being that much depleted does give us a better chance to land those recruits IF we can make a great run in March.

I'm not against picking a shooting guard/small forward type this late in the season, provided he is a good athlete with offensive knacks. But I wish Painter would broaden his search a bit. There gots to be more under-the-radar guys all over the country. Why limit your search just to in-state? With all the interests in HS BB in the state of Indiana, it is not likely for a real jem to be able to escape the eyes of scouts. I wouldn't mind picking up a JUCO if it is a tall athletic inside player who can relieve either Haas or Swanigan when needed.

Why do you think Painter is limited to in-state recruits? Seems like Haas, Steves, Mathias, and Edwards came from other states. Hill and Octius too, right? Not sure what your point is, other than worrying about a couple recruitiing classes that are too far out to have in sharp focus yet (2017 and 2018).

I do think you are right on target about next year.

Boiler up!

I am not saying Painter is limited to in-state in overall recruiting. He has done a good job recruiting out of state so far. What I meant is for the remainig 2016 recruiting. I am sure he wants to bank the scholarship or two for 2017 recruiting, but I wouldn't mind picking up another player in 2016 who can help us un the long run. But so far all I hear has beem about some instate recruits who just have gotten a few MAC offers. We need more than that. I wish Painter would go outside for a true hidden jem in 2016 class, instead of just settling for what's convenient. That's all I am saying.

If Painter is limited to in-state talent, and I don't believe that to be true, I am happy that his state is Indiana. Pretty decent basketball state when it comes to high school basketball.

Well, I guess I wouldn't call our situation @ the 1 & 2 loaded......not even close....

First, despite what you feel about our shooting, we ARE loaded this season. For example, at 2, 3 3-point specialists, even though they are somewhat struggling right now, are still 3 people they have to compete against. One would have to be very egotistical to believe he can outplay all of them without any prior college experience, and such a recruit would demand promised minutes, which I doubt Painter would give without the recruit playing a single college minute.

Discussing our depth at 4 and 5 would be waste of time. We are set for starters at 4 and 5 next year, and the most 4 or 5 star players want starting minutes right away. Not many are willing to play behind some guy AND play defense AND at Purdue.

3? Two words: Vince Edwards.

The only position practically open was at one, and that is if a recruit was willing to either disregard or compete with PJ and Weatherford. Without a certainty Purdue would go far in March, no recruit would be so willing to come to Purdue to compete for a position without any minutes promised.

Basically our depth actually worked against us in the 2016 class, and no star player was willing to join us. They weren't sure either we would go far in March or they wouldn't have to compete for the playing minutes.

It looks like any remaining good prospects will come from the ranks of late-bloomers, diamonds in the rough, and small-school kids who did not play AAU and are therefore unknown to the world.

Since there aren't ANY current Boiler guards in the top 43 scorers in the B1G....I would hardly call that loaded @ guard. Just cause Purdue has some nice bench depth there....doesn't mean you are loaded @ guard.....Other than RayD who plays on the frontline mostly.....no disrespect to the bench guards here @ Purdue, but Purdue simply has the kind of talent @ guard that no possible decent guard recruit would worry about in relation to PT.......and also in relation to the above.....what decent HS guard doesn't have an ego?

I don't want Painter to settle in 2016. This team only has one junior, so banking a couple of scholarships for a strong 2017 class isn't a bad thing.

exactly, recruits want to play now and only the pg spot offers that. A lot of talent there in 2017 so hopefully we take advantage of that.

We do need some athletes in the 6.4 to 6.8 range. They can redshirt and develop long term. That said, there are players who will want out of their letter when the coaching carousel begins in March.

Painter's boss would prefer that all of his recruits come from the state of Indiana.

Caris LeVert was a MAC kid with few offers. He committed to Ohio University before reopening his recruitment very late. Purdue got a visit and was considered a frontrunner before he chose Michigan.
