Why do you think Ray didnt guard Valentine most of the game? CMP thinking DV is going to get his 27 no matter who guards him and we'll shut down the next guy?

Probably. Did the same thing the second time we played Iowa. Ray was on Joc.

Agree. And IIRC he was on Forbes then to probably keep him from going off.
And it worked. Valentine is generally going to get his. Didn't want Forbes to get hot and put up 20 himself while Valentine gets slowed a bit but drops 20 himself.

I think you're right in part that Valentine has the ball in his hands so much that he is going to get his regardless. I think PJ & Hill deserve some credit as Valentine's 27 pts on 23 FGAs was one of his least efficient performance of the season.

Like BBG implied, I also think Painter could see MSU struggles when Forbes isn't providing that second scoring option & he made sure Ray limited Bryn's opportunities as much as possible.

In MSU's 5 losses Forbes has scored: 3, 2, 12, 3, and 7 pts.
In MSU's 20 wins, Forbes averages 16.1ppg (only scored less than 12 pts 3 times in those 20 wins)

The fact that Ray was on fire offensively, I think he also wanted to conserve his energy for that side of the ball. Guarding the other team's best player is very draining.

Painter's post-game presser, he said they were going to keep quickness on Valentine and prevent Forbes from going nuts. He said Valentine might score 50 that way, and acknowledged nearly giving up a triple double, but also pointed out that Valentine took 23 shots to score those 27 pts. So whether it worked or not, Purdue won and Forbes did jackshitnothing.

I think Ray is a better defender off the ball than on it, as well. With Valentine running the 1 quite a bit, that's a tougher matchup for RD.

I actually thought that PJ probably bothered Valentine more than anyone. If the officials ever call him for using his off hand as a stiff arm he would turn the ball over ten times a game. He doesn't really have that tight a handle when operating in the half court sets.

Yes. CMP said as much during the post game presser. Also this was called a foul yesterday...ok this is my last bitch about the refs. haha.

That was a foul called on Swanigan in the first half. He came down on DD's arm, which is what was called. CS really should have let AJ take care of that one.

Actually, Swanigan never made contact. AJ made contact with his arm after he'd blocked the shot. It was a questionable call, at best.

They missed a travel both ways.

The worst was the over the back against PJ that ended up being a six-point possession cutting the lead in half. That one was ridiculous.

Yes....RD locked down Forbes in the second half. No doubt Valentine is a tough match-up and terrific player, but I think Purdue made him a little less efficient last night despite the 27 pts. 10-23 shooting, 5-12 from 3 is still pretty good though, 8 Reb, 10 assists.......what can you say......kid is a tough.....great player.

Forbes......3-11......1-7 from 3.....7 pts......and that's probably the difference.

Also, Jay Williams and Seth Greenberg had terrific things to say about RD and his defense after the game, and how underrated a player he is. I think Ray is coming back around from the injury, maybe......we'll see what happens against Maryland the second time around. I also noticed a little last night that Purdue is staying with certain shooters (at least Ray D did) and not helping in certain situations like they may have in the past.

Despite all the animosity in recent years.....Izzo is still one helluva coach, and Michigan State is a formidable team (despite where they are in the conference standings). Yes, several cardiac instances were probably reported last night......yes......still some issues.......but Purdue ended a 7-game losing streak to the Spartans and beat a top-ten ranked opponent for the first time in like 5 years......a very good win.

Plenty for CMP to use for learning purposes, however.

This season still could go either way, though IMO. Don't know what to make of it other than.....Fasten your seat belts, Ladies and Gentlemen.

Watching Davis last night reminded me of the 1995 game at M$U when Cuonzo Martin shut down Shawn Respert and was also the game's leading scorer in leading the Boilers to an upset win.

re watching the game now. wow. some of the really bad calls. over the back and Jockich said good call. what a dork. and the missed call on the lose ball where Johnny Hill is grabbed. dumb ass announcers said official couldn't see it because he was watching the ball. what about the other two officials? Teddy Valentine blew some really bad calls.

Correct. The refs never call a foul if incidental contact is made after a shot is blocked. The player no longer had the ball, so it isn't a shooting foul.

Personally, I think Ray does his best work on the spot up shooters compared to more versatile players. Putting him on Forbes was the right call I think. At the end of the day, Valentine is the type of player that can get it going and score on anyone. Ray may be able to slow him down or not but I'm pretty confident he can shut down Forbes almost any time that is his primary assignment. With the way we match up with MSU, if they were going to beat us it was going to be due to their guards. If we can take away one almost entirely and force the other one to try to beat us almost by himself then I think we take that. Valentine came close to doing that with a little help from his dad Teddy but I think those matchups maximize our chances.

Painter did the same thing with Kramer. Stop the next best option because the best players in the conference are usually going to play well no matter who is guarding them
