Purdue's 2017 Class rated #34 by RIvals

Don't look now but Wheeler just moved into the Rivals Top 150.

for everything positive, there is an equal negative reaction. It's nice to see Wheeler moving up, but Ondigo fell completely off the 150 ranking. And while last year C Edwards jumped up about 20 slots. and I thought Eastern would likewise, he fell to the 70's.

I'm not sold on Ondigo myself.

I think Purdue is fine in the front court right now. Haarms being able to get in early was a hidden blessing because he learned the defensive concepts and that's what he'll be asked to mainly do next season while stretching bigs out to allow Carsen and Vince in to the lane more. If the combo of Haarms and Taylor/Ewing can give Purdue a solid 12-15 minutes per game...that would mean Haas could have an effective 25 minutes per game without tiring down the stretch.

If Taylor can stay healthy and provide some quality depth, any chance the two 7'2 bigs play at the same time? Not that I think it would be a good idea but think CMP gives it a shot at some point?

I think the answer to this question will be based on what Haarms can do on the defensive end. If he is capable of staying with a smaller quicker 4 then Purdue could incorporate a high low game kind of like we saw with Biggie and Haas in short spurts.

Ondigo was never ranked in the top 150. I'm also not sure Eastern fell at all from the last set of rankings. Could've sworn he was 75, now he's 73.

Eastern was ranked higher in several other rankings! My concern with Ondigo is not that I like or dislike him or that I'm worried about where we will be next year. I believe we'll be ok with Haas and Taylor at c with Haarmes and Ewing and Edwards at PF! My concern is next year after Haas leaves! Ondigo seems to be at least better than our targeted 2018 big men! At this stage I wouldn't mind signing a transfer and letting him sit out this year and being ready to play next year after everyone leaves

Chill with the exclamation points. What other sites had Nojel ranked higher? We need to be trying to assemble the best team for next year (we owe it to our seniors) but also keep an eye on the 2018-19 season, where I agree with you we need a more proven center. Hoping that Steve Lutz can pull in a big-time center to come in and be ready for the 18-19 season. Whether it's a transfer or a regular recruit, I'm confident he will get it done.

Who knows, maybe we get a really solid center in the next month who is ready to contribute next season. But that's a lot to ask. The pool is small and the demand is incredibly high.

It's safe to assume that all of Painter's 2018 targeted big men are not public knowledge. We learn this every year.

! Are just as easy to type as . And easier to find! Did you really need to say chill? And some people get offended if people use all caps! It's just a character! At least I got the right you're rather than the lazy your!

If Purdue was really interested in fielding the best possible team for next year, they would have hired Jordan porters dad or whatever his name is as an assistant coach and signed his son!

I've kind of given up on Mc coy. A lot of posters said Eastern and Bowen hate each other! I'd really love to see Painter sneak in and steal Tilmon from Zo. Who knows? At this time last year nobody had heard of Epperson, Haarms or Ondigo.

Tilmon and McCoy aren't happening. I'm hoping we get a visit from Garrison Brooks, who asked for his release from Mississippi State. That's much more realistic, but still a longshot.

I' d like to see better success signing LA Lum's players. I have to believe they will have another currently unknown quality big man.

Wooten got his release from ASU. Has an offer from Kansas and Oregon. If Oregon lands McCoy or somebody else, he might be available. Would love to see Painter on a dang plan visiting Brooks, McCoy, and Wooten. We need a rim protector and shot blocker. Those guys are the best available rim protectors. Got to atleast try.

Recruiting rankings are indication of future performance.

Case #1: Purdue Football

We have been incredibly low in rankings for last decade and the result is in line with expectations.

Case #2: Purdue is middle of the road BIG in basketball.

Our recruiting has been in line with that for past 10 years.

Yes. There are outliers (we won BIG this year); Biggie was a great recruit.

Can we outplay a #34 recruiting rating. Sure. But I would think 2-3 years from now our performance on the court will be consistent to what it has been the past 10 years.

Make some NCAA. Miss some. Rarely get past first weekend and win the BIG once a decade.

Purdue @ 34 was out recruited by at least 25 non-blue blood power schools including the likes of Alabama, Providence, Arkansas, Colorado and Western Kentucky. :)

MSU 17
WISC 27
MD 32
Iowa 35

For such a big class you would think we would be higher up just on sheer numbers. Here is what they said about the class: "Overview: A big bodied guard, Eastern can play all three perimeter positions in the Big Ten. Wheeler is an above average athlete with huge upside while Haarms adds more size on the interior and Stefanovic could develop into a knockdown shooter."

The class IMO has great long term potential and is one that could be a total home run gangbuster if Haarms and Wheeler develop into potential big time difference maker types and SS develops into his DM role.

Or a total flop........ if players mentioned do not work out and end up transferring.

It is generally thought that Eastern will be a success here, but to be a good to great class we need at least two guys to be 2 year plus guys who are difference maker starters (like VE, DM or PJT were) and all to be contributors.

I stress the difference maker deal because I think a good class has guys that compete for a B1G championship or are knocking hard on the door for a championship @ some point in their career.

247 has them as them at 21, with only Wisconsin ahead of them in the Big Ten. Find a way to add Brooks, McCoy, or Wooten and I imagine they move solidly into the top 20 and possibly jump Wisconsin for first in the Big Ten, (with a shot at the top ten if they add McCoy). Painter seems locked in on Ondigo and I haven't heard any mention of him visiting or even offering the three big guys I mentioned above. Even if they say no, he should be flying out and offering and going all in for a sale on each of them. Big Man U, gotta get get it done.

I would be satisfied with Ondigo if he added about 5-10 pounds. If that doesn't happen, I would not be too excited about him. I don't think he has the handles to be a SF or G.

Garrison Brooks is better polished and a better rim defender. Would rather have him over Ondigo, and it isn't a stretch that we land him (like the pipe dreams of McCoy).

Would I rather have a project such as Ondigo for 4 years? Or bring in a proven transfer like Brooks for 1-2 years and hope I could find somebody better in the 2018 or 2019 class? Is Ondigo better than Trapp? Do I even like Trapp? I just hate wasting a 4 year scholarship on a player if you're already recruiting somebody better at the same position in the following class. That is why I can accept recruiting a JuCo or transfer as a stop gap measure.

Garrison Brooks would be a freshman next year and have four years of eligibility. He is more athletic and a better rim protector than Ondigo. He also has better offers than Ondigo. He would be a very nice pickup. He is trending up. Ondigo is trending down. Ondigo will be a nice player, but he is a project. Brooks could play immediately with his ability to defend.

According to Rivals, the overall rating for 2017 is Purdue's highest since 2007. I'm not sure if that's because of the size of the class, but I found that interesting.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like that would be correct. The 2012, 2013 (man, that turned out to be a disappointment), and 2014 classes should all be rated higher than 2017's (2017 will likely end up better than 2013 but just going by the ratings, all three of Stephens, Scott, and Smotherman were in the Rivals top 120).
