Will be interesting to see if Matt goes with one big to start or two bigs to start. Could go either way. I like having the flexibility to play 4-1 or 3-2.

You might see two because of Hayes and Happ, but I agree.....could go either way. Contain Happ and Koenig, and I think the Boilers can come out on top with a cleaner offensive game than last night.

Captain Obvious here......YUGE game.....only regular season meeting with the Badgers who have already won in Bloomington....plus Michigan State has gotten out of the gate well.

I think we see both starting, Happ worries me so hoping IH gets him in foul trouble early. I think CMP tries to establish Haas out of gate.

Think we play much better than last couple of games. Not even sure that translates to a W but see Nova type of game from us(hopefully diff outcome). Don't like Wisky having 4 days to prepare for us and that was a big win going into Bloomington for them.

Cant' wait. Boiler up.

If this team wants to win the conference, there's no getting around this game. After this game, we're either tied with Wisconsin and have the head-to-head tiebreaker or down 2 games to them and lose the tiebreaker. They've already won in Bloomington so that's one potential road loss off their checklist. Purdue would be then 2nd for them and if they have both in their first 4 games that's too much ground for us to make up.

I'm with you on this TC. I hate to say a game in early January is that important but it is because of the circumstances you pointed out. Can't stand the unbalanced schedules but this is the reality we have.

I would like to see the team's assist totals rise again with only 11 in the last game.......particularly resulting in some help from Cline for this one. Cline's shooting is down since the B1G started, and it would be nice to see him join the party & go off again, due to the team creating good shots for him and Dakota with good sharing of the ball like we saw prior to the OSU game. When the team's assist totals rise they are fun to watch. That 2nd half @ OSU was not very watchable offensively for Purdue.

Yep. I think it would be different if UW was really young or had a track record of being less effective in conference play. There is enough of a body of work 15 games into this season with an experienced UW team to have some confidence in the current statistical projections, which project them as a 14-4 team in conference play. Purdue falling to 2-2 would present a very difficult task in catching them. I know it was popular around here, but UW winning on the road at IU did not help our cause.

I think if Isaac and Biggie play patient defense on Happ it be effective. He loves up and unders mixed in with pivots and travels to get off flips that he is really good at shooting. If our guys stay down until he completes his gyrations and pivot foot changes he can then be challenged. It will be interesting to see if Hayes decides he has s a perimeter guy or a post guy. Sometimes he falls in love with being a perimeter only guy and it makes him less effective. I think we can adjust to either.

Agree 100% regarding Happ. He gave us fits in the first half of their game at Mackey last year because our guys wouldn't stay planted while trying to defend him. He wore down in the 2nd half because he had to battle AJ and Isaac all game but hopefully we learned just what you said because otherwise I see him giving us fits again.

Wisconsin fan/interloper here & impressed with your knowledge of some of our "finer points". Purdue is one of the few teams that has the personnel to match the Badgers' offensive strengths. Happ has been really effective lately when teams try to double him with the kick out to the perimeter or dish to a slashing wing, but PU doesn't need to double him. Hayes has effectively given up being a mostly-perimeter guy after the loss to UNC @ Maui - since then, he'll still take the occasional outside shot, but mostly he's mid-range and in (and drawing a fair number of fouls). Neither Happ nor Hayes are good FT shooters, however, so that could come into play. The other "star" is Koenig, and he'll get his, but a key for UW is how much they get from Showalter, Brown, & Trice - it's these secondary guys that really make UW hard to handle for most teams. We UW fans are expecting more PT for Thomas for this game than usual - he's more of a physical presence than Iverson (who's undersized but athletic - more of a 2/3 whereas Thomas is a 3/4 who can play the 5 to spell Happ) or Illikainen (finesse player who's underperformed and PT has steadily waned). The one player not mentioned above that could possibly get a minute or two is Aaron Moesch - he's a walk-on who knows what he's doing out there - like an assistant coach on the floor, but without much actual skill. If there's foul trouble, Moesch could see the floor ahead of a guy like Van Vliet who is very skilled offensively, but a total liability defensively.

It's the smart move.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a return to one of the early season starting line-ups of PJ, Mathias, VE, Swanigan, and Haas. Wisconsin is one of the few teams that has a very traditional type starting 5 in that their guys play the 1 through 5 positions as they are sort of classically defined. I think we match up with that type of line-up pretty well.

Purdue cannot really afford another home loss this year -- to anybody.

7 of Purdue's last 11 conference games are on the road. There will be some losses in there.

Isaac needs to start. Main reason is that Happ is a tough matchup for Caleb on both ends of the court. This is a game where I would start all three bigs plus Dakota and either PJ or Carsen.

That and it would be really nice to get into their bench.

Darn. I was hoping Hayes would float around out side like Bryant down in Bloomington:D. Lots of similarities between our two teams personnel and style of play. Both teams are a bit more offensive minded than in the past. Coach has been using multiple starting line ups to fit matchups and it is working well. I predict the following...5)Haas 4)Swanigan 3)Vince Edwards 2)Mathias 1)Thompson.
First man in will be Carsen Edwards for Haas. Carsen is a six foot freshman, so he looks funny at the 5 but you will get used to it. OK, that's the the three guard line up. We have a lot of three point shooters this season. When they find the combination with hot hands they look awfully good. Should be a great game.

It's possible because I think Painter wants to avoid Swanigan getting in early foul trouble even moreso than Haas. Ethan Happ will almost certainly draw a couple of fouls with his fancy footwork (sometimes looks like traveling) in the paint. 4 man Vitto Brown is mostly a perimeter shooter so Swanigan or VE could guard him but VE, Smotherman, or Mathias will have to guard Nigel Hayes.

I'd be more worried about happ getting Haas in foul trouble than the other way around.
I start Biggie on happ, Vince on Hayes, DM on Koenig.
Fortunately, I don't think they have a penetrating PG so that's a big plus for P.

If I remember correctly, Swanigan dominated Happ with his strength around basket in the second half at Mackey last year. Regardless of who starts, that will be a fun matchup to watch. I think we should go at Happ early and often to get him in foul trouble.

4/5 #33 Andy Van Vliet 6'11 220 (So.) (left-handed shooter) (ruled ineligible to play last season due to playing with a club team in his native Belgium): averaging 2 PPG, 38% FG's (6-16), 75% FT's (3-4), 38% 3PT's (3-8), and 4.4 MPG in 9 GP this season

Interested to see who guards Koenig. Still having nightmares of Nate Mason and see slowing him as one of the biggest keys to the game.

Would be nice to see Spike have a break out game offensively and with hustle plays. He is bound to make an impact soon one would think. Hope he can stay healthy.

Have not watched Wisky much and did not know Trice has a younger brother. Looks like he is there only bench weapon that could get hot and hurt us.

Should be a fun game. Mackey will be absolutely rocking with the students back!

In addition to Trice, Iverson is also a capable offensive weapon off the bench. Gets a majority of his points on dunks, whereas Trice is mostly a shooter.

True no doubt, but it was still fun to watch them win down there...and I am on record multiple times, but I don't care personally about any help from IU...I want Purdue to take care of business on its own, and if for whatever reason they don't/can't, then so be it. Had IU won, I guess I could have lived with the fact that it was more beneficial for Purdue, but the fact that they lost did not bother me at all.

Isaac needs to start. Main reason is that Happ is a tough matchup for Caleb on both ends of the court. This is a game where I would start all three bigs plus Dakota and either PJ or Carsen.
I am inclined to agree, although Happ is a bad matchup for just about anyone unfortunately...the one guy that I thought might match up actually and cause some problems is an undersized Vince Edwards...Haas is too slow...Caleb not athletic enough.

At least at the other end, either are equal the mismatch for Happ...and just as Wisconsin will try to expose the mismatch at their end if Haas or Swanigan is on him, Purdue will absolutely need to do the same at the other end...key will be if Haas can actually finish at the rim and genuinely expose the mismatch, as Happ is likely to do it at their end.

If all else fails, I believe Swanigan will be up to the task of defending Happ.

I'd be more worried about happ getting Haas in foul trouble than the other way around.
I start Biggie on happ, Vince on Hayes, DM on Koenig.
Fortunately, I don't think they have a penetrating PG so that's a big plus for P.
The more I hear the more I think we can do either way and just see what works best.
