I like to browse other team's forums to see how the Boilers are perceived. UT bloggers seem concerned about Haas and realize he has skills to go with size. Some of them think a good strategy is to take advantage of his conditioning. They're disappointed with their program for not recruiting Haas. They apparently reached out once to him but didn't follow up. One of the bloggers knows Haas personally and speaks of how good a person he is. I read someone's comment that they think they'd be a top ten team with Haas.

I'm a bit torn on Taylor. On one hand, I want him to be cautious, ease his way in, and be healthy contributing the entire season. On the other, I want him to just wreak havoc on both ends of the court like we know he can.

Just glancing over what Nage has, do they only have ONE guy over 6' 7" who plays? Do they only have 7 guys who play much? Hmmmm .... if so ....

not done with the overview

looks like they might be a pressing team: have played 16 guys after only 2 games

I really hope they press us. I think we will do great against it if they do. We had very little problems with the press last season and we reportedly had little problem with West Virginia's press in our scrimmage. I also think it would be a spot where Nojel Eastern can shine. He seems to be forcing things a little in the half court so far. I think a pressing team is just what he needs to get going

Who do they think are their best players, rustcr?
Not really sure. Some posters seem to think running and gunning is the way to go. They hope the officials call it tight and Haas gets in foul trouble. They'll have to hit threes. Apparently they are deep and they anticipate a lot of substitutions. They do acknowledge that Purdue is deep too.

Nage. Curious what you list Haarms at 235? Every game I hear he’s 250 and is listed at 250 on the official roster.

http://www.purduesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/pur-m-baskbl-mtt.html

I see what you’re saying, but at 7’-3”, you don’t need a ton of bulk to be 250 lbs.

You fool! You fell victim to one of the Classic Blunders:
1) Never get involved in a land war in Asia
2) Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line
3) Never let nagemj02 guess your weight at the carnival

Edit: just re-read & hope you guys recognize I'm having fun with a movie reference. Not trying to insult either of you.

Inconceivable!!

Who do they think are their best players, rustcr?
Grant Williams is their best player. He is one of those classic undersized power forwards that just has a talent for scoring the ball. Will be a tough matchup for Vince in the post to cover him.

I also have been on the Volnation Basketball Forum. Most of them really don't appear to know much about Purdue. Several posters have commented that with 2 7' plus men we MUST play a lot of ZONE....lol!!! And someone on there posted that we absolutely do!!!! They also seem pretty sure we have never seen anything like how good their defense is....lol! I am currently waiting for my registration to be re approved ( I let it lapse after Cuonzo left) As I thought I would go in peace there and post some of our current stats for the year...just to see if that made them any less confident that they will run us out of the gym because we are big and sluggish:p

Just went to the Vols 247 Board....It's about 180' out in its knowledge of Purdue and our current stats...over the VolsNation Board. That preview of Purdue would make any Boilermaker proud...

I wouldn't be worried about Purdue being pressed in to a game they don't like given there are 4 seniors and a player who started 21 games last season along with Cline being first off the bench as a junior. Likely what you'll see is a tight 8 man rotation with Grady getting roughly 6-8 minutes of time barring foul trouble for Vince. You'll probably see Haarms and Eastern paired up with mostly seniors on the floor to counter their vulnerability as freshman....although the two appear to be incredibly even keeled for freshman and won't likely be rattled by much on a neutral court site. My guess is that Cline and Haarms likely get 15+ minutes in this game, Eastern gets about 8-10, and Grady gets 6-8 as well while the veterans get a bulk of the minutes.

Key would be to get separation from the Vols early on and allow the bench to play extended minutes in the second half to rest the players for the games coming later. This is where Purdue's ability to hit threes and extend leads should come in to play and hopefully learn from their mistakes against Marquette in that regard.

Please do. I was just over there taking a look. I saw the comments about zone and chuckled and thought they see what Tenn will attempt to do on D every day in practice. There are a couple of people that seem to know about this years Purdue team and what they appear to be capable of. I cannot wait until tomorrow even with my in-laws showing up at about half time. I remember the days of watching the CNN ticker across the bottom of the screen while in St Louis for Thanksgiving for score updates. Times have changed, but the excitement is still the same.

I hope that any Purdue fans who visit their board are respectful and don’t encourage a bunch of Tennessee trolls to invade this board in retaliation.

I always try to be somewhat overly polite when visiting others boards....Well with the exception of maybe one...which of course will remain nameless....and even then only when responding to all th their "moooooos"

Reminds me of the ISU fans last year

I just took a glance at their board-there isn't anything dedicated to us, just general chatter about the tourney. Most think Rick Barnes will figure out a way to beat us....typical fan-base that lives and dies football (no clue about anything CBB related). I'm going to go out on a limb and say we hammer them. Boilers 89-71 Edwards and Edwards both put up big numbers.

Here's a 5 page thread pretty much dedicated to us. Not sure if this is the one people are reading or if its another one.

Just read their message board. If these guys try to run with us we will score 120 points or better. They are not going to speed up the game and wear us out. We have too strong of a bench and way too many weapons. Isaac is gonna eat and eat often. I just hope that he saves some of that appetite for Thanksgiving.

wow that is terrible. the Vols 247 forum is much more informed.
Here is their coach Barnes talking about Purdue's zone (I can't make this up)

“At this point in time, we feel like we’ve got enough things in that we need. Whether we face a 2-3, 3-2, 1-3-1 — we think we’ve got that covered. It’s still about us doing what we do and getting better at it,” Barnes said.

I gotta believe he's referring to other teams in the tournament and near future that they'll play against. There's no way someone like him doesn't know how Purdue plays defense.
