With the narrative of Purdue never beating a 1 seed and that the Boilers have struggled in recent years with some double digit seeds, is there an easy way I can find Purdue's record vs every seed in the NCAAs? Would also be interested in seeing the data for Painter's era as well. Don't feel like compiling it myself!

I don’t have the data, but my observation is that Painter is an underrated tournament coach. He now has 8 Sweet 16s including an Elite 8 in 2019 and a national championship game run last season.

A few other nuggets I found:

Most games played against an opponent:
  • Texas and Kansas - 4
  • Duke - 3
  • Several at 2

Most wins vs:
  • Gonzaga, Tennessee and Texas - 2

Prior to Painter, Purdue had only played in 2 overtime games in the NCAA tourney (1986 LSU and 1997 Rhode Island).

Painter's teams have played 6 OT games, including three in a row (2019 Tennessee and Virginia, 2020 North Texas). Other OT games were 2010 Texas A&M, 2015 Cincinnati, and 2016 Little Rock (the only 2OT game). Painter has lost 4 of his last 5 OT games.

Painter should be 3-0 against 2 seeds. That ending to the Kansas game Robbie's last year was an absolute offensive choke job. Epic collaspe at the end of the game basically giving Kansas free points for multiple posessions due to live ball half court turnovers.

I hate the word Choke but LewJack certainly lost his mind for a moment. Just an unfortunate sequence.

We are up 3 and Byrd misses a good look late in the shot clock. Rebound goes long and they get a runout for a dunk.

LewJack over dribbled into a turnover (may have been fouled) which resulted in another runout.

Hummel misses a great look for the lead and they get another runout dunk.

And then Ryne Smith got a very good look at the buzzer that was a bit too strong.

Our halfcourt defense was really good in that game. But we didn't get to show it in the last 2 minutes.

That game made me ill. Robbie's last game and we had it in the bag.

and Kansas got all the way to the title game, bowing out to Kentucky after also knocking out Ohio State. Survive and advance really rang true in the second round.

That was definitely a "close but no cigar" Region that year.

13-seed Ohio (coached by Jon Groce) could have taken out the top-seed North Carolina in the next round in a similar fashion but fell short in OT......just a few plays here and there prevented that MIDWEST Region part of the bracket from completely coming apart for the lower-seeded teams. Ohio had beaten 4-seed Michigan in the opening round, #11-seed North Carolina State took out both #6-seed San Diego State and #3-seed Georgetown. #10-seed Purdue had Kansas all but beat, and Ohio was a missed FT from toppling Carolina.

However, if you just look at the Regional Final rounds - ho hum....... #1 v. #2 seed, chalk city.

Yeah, that was a rough way for Hummel and LewJack to go out.

Who was it that said: "this tournament can really humble you. If it hasn't humbled you yet, you haven't been around it long enough" (or something like that)

Like all they had to do was get decent shots at the rim and get back on D and there was a great chance to be up a possession during the last 30 sec then it becomes a ft shooting drill! Kansas was stimied by the purdue defense. If Kansas somehow came alive and hit shots in the last 1:30 then you tip your cap. But it was just run out after run out for them becasue of horrific offense execution on Purdue's part.

Think about how much Purdue has climbed this graph in the last several years.

It would be interesting to see that graphic for just the 64/68-team era, when everyone has to win twice to make the S16.

Illinois (7 of 27, 26%) and Indiana (10 of 27, 31%) would drop. ND (4 of 19, 21%) would plummet.

Purdue is 13 of 31 (42%) making the S16 in the 64+ team era.
