Purdue vs. Michigan: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Should be an interesting game depending on which Purdue team shows up. If we play like last night, it will not turn out well for the Boilers.

Michigan could not keep up with Purdue in the first game. Purdue used its speed and quickness as an advantage. First to 50 50 balls, pushing pace getting mich into bad transition defense, etc. Second game, Purdue seemed to settle and allow Michigan's height+skill be more effective. If Purdue comes out with energy and maintains it for most of the game, I like the matchup.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight, it’s the #20- ranked Purdue Boilermakers (22-10; 14-7) taking on the #22-ranked Michigan Wolverines (22-9; 14-6) in Game 11 of the 2025 Big Ten Tournament from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. This is the final Quarterfinal Round game (#3 seed v. #6 seed). Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 9:00 pm (Eastern time), to follow 20 minutes after completion of the Illinois (#7 seed)/Maryland (#2 seed) game with television coverage on the Big Ten Network.

Purdue and Michigan met twice during the regular season with each team winning on its respective home courts. Purdue blitzed Michigan with an opening flurry of forced turnovers and shooting to have a commanding lead and cruised to a 91- 64 win back toward the end of January. In the second week of February, Michigan rallied in the second half to defeat Purdue in Ann Arbor, 75-73, which started a four-game losing slide for Purdue.

Projected Starting Line-ups:

Purdue – Trey Kaufman-Renn, Caleb Furst, CJ Cox, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith

Michigan – Danny Wolf, Vladislav Goldin, Tre Donladson, Nimari Burnett, and Rubin Jones

Michigan dropped their last three games of the regular season, to Illinois, Maryland and Michigan State in a stretch where they lost four of six games to fade from the top of the conference standings. Despite that disappointing finish, Michigan remains a difficult match-up. Its strength is its size, led by 7-0 Danny Wolf (Yale transfer) and 7-1 Vladislav Goldin (7-1, 250, FAU transfer). Goldin averages 16.7 points and 6.7 rebounds, while shooting 64.2% from the field. Wolf is more of a 7-foot, 250-pound wing, who averages 12.9 points, 9.7 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 3.7 assists, while shooting 50% from the field and 34.4% from long range. Tre Donaldson and Nimari Burnett are good secondary scoring options for the Wolverines, and Roddy Gayle, Jr. (who had 14 in the last matchup) and Will Tschetter provide additional production off the bench.

Michigan averages 79.1 points per game, while shooting 47.8% from the field and 33.6% from long range. The Wolverines also allow 71.4 points per game, 40.9% shooting from the field and 32% from long range. Michigan hits the boards well, ranking 46th in total rebounding percentage. The biggest issue is turnovers as they rank 347th with 14.4 per game. Purdue really exploited that in the first game, forcing 22 of them producing 29 points, and several of those were in the first few minutes of the game.

Michigan is 30th overall in the KenPom ratings, 50th offensively and 19th defensively. The Wolverines pace of play is well above average, rated 62nd in adjusted tempo. Purdue is currently 16th overall in the KenPom ratings, 8th offensively and 55th defensively. Adjusted tempo rating has the Boilers 297th, well below average in pace of play.

This is an intriguing match-up, and given that it's the third meeting between the teams in less than two months, there should be some familiarity but also some opportunities for adjustments. Expect this to be a spirited contest between two good teams looking to regain some earlier form. In the first match-up, Purdue jumped all over Michigan defensively, forcing several turnovers early and capitalizing before the Wolverines really knew what hit them. In the second match-up, Michigan trailed most of the night, rallying from a 48-38 deficit with 14:44 remaining with a 19-9 run to tie it on a 3-pointer by Nimari Burnett with 5:51 to go. Neither team led by more than four the rest of the way.

The Goldin/Wolf two-man game should still be a focus for the Purdue defense, and the Boilers' success with defensing that will go a long way in determining the game's outcome. Michigan does not go extremely deep with its bench, so that might be an area where Purdue can gain an advantage. Cam Heide and Myles Colvin provided some much needed support for the Boilers last night, and a repeat performance tonight could be the difference. Purdue had no bench scoring in the game in Ann Arbor. Purdue will need to be successful from long-range.....and at least hold their own on the glass. Michigan had the slight edge in second chance points in both games (16-12 and 13-10). The big difference in the last game was at the FT line. Michigan went 18-26, and Purdue was 6-8. Purdue's front line was in foul trouble all night, and both Trey Kaufman-Renn and Caleb Furst fouled out. That could be another barometer for tonight's game - expect it to be physical, and will Purdue be able to handle it.

Rebounding is going to be important. Shot making is going to be important. Purdue has not forced as many turnovers as of late - the Boilers certainly could use a few tonight from the Wolverines. If they can force turnovers and get in transition, it will really help the efficiency of the offense. Purdue will need to execute much better than last night against a very balanced Michigan team that has size and skill, and when they are on, capable of beating any team. The Boilers were better on the defensive end in the second half last night, holding the USC Trojans to 40% shooting (including < 50% from inside the arc) - will they be able to continue that? Purdue definitely needs to come out with more energy from the start - from everyone.

Purdue can continue to build some momentum and take another step toward a possible conference tournament with a big effort tonight against a really good Michigan team. The winner of this game takes on the winner of Illinois/Maryland in the second Semi-Final game tomorrow afternoon.

How do the Boilers fare?

We shall see, coming up in a couple of hours or so.

Boiler up, my friends.

Looking forward to more positive contributions from Heide and Colvin. And Cox and Harris. Of course we have to have the big 3 on target. So BTFU!

Defense wins games. Boilers better be as good tonight as they've been all year. And everyone needs to step it up a notch. Meetchicken is a very dangerous team.

I have a really good feeling about this one.
Totally agree - we dominated game one at home and controlled game 2 until the final minutes - unfortunately too familiar for this team. I like that we’ve already played - we should start fast. Stay out of foul trouble and this is a W.
