Purdue to play Houston in Sweet 16

Well said.

Roberts was on that team with 2 min in the F4 game to Baylor (NC winner). And funny enough, cryer was on the other side at Baylor and played 2 min as well.

Roberts is in his sixth year at Houston this year 😂 and this will be Cryer’s 5th year (Covid senior).
If you take the Covid Srs out of college basketball Purdue is a top 5 team. Duke would probably run away with it still, but it gives me hope for next year if the team mostly stays intact and adds 1 or 2 key pieces.

There will be a HUGE talent drop of next year when these 5th/6yrs leave and those relying on Portal will find their might not be enough talent to build a competitive roster. Just a hunch, but next year is where the teams that have been developing a program will shine.

This will be the third consecutive match-up for Purdue facing a team with a double-digit win streak.

Purdue under Painter is definitely overdue to knock off a Region top seed, and arguably would be the upset of the tournament so far if they somehow pulled it off. IIRC:

07 (Florida) - as #9 seed

'09 (Connecticut) - as #5 seed

'10 (Duke) - as #4 seed

'17 (Kansas) - as #4 seed

'19 (Virginia) - as #3 seed

'24 (Connecticut) - as #1 seed

'25 (Houston) - as #4 seed
It’s a win-win situation for Purdue, as no one expects them to compete with Houston. We’ve got the talent on this team to win, and all of Matt’s scheduling of top teams means that they shouldn’t be affected by the top seed. This has historic potential for Purdue to pull off the upset, and very little downside. Boiler Up!!!

💯 💯

If Houston comes out flat and Purdue is shooting well, Purdue can stay close for a while. But superior talent, athleticism, swarming defense will help Houston pull away. Sweet sixteen is terrific in a “rebuilding” year without injured inside defensive presence. If Purdue surprises and gets by, all the better.

1005 agree. I honestly wouldn't be shocked to see us get steam rolled. Houston is no joke.

That being said.. weirder things have happened.. find a way to get past Houston.. who knows what could happen...

Sweet 16 was the ceiling IMO so reaching it is a great accomplishment. Next season add a couple of players and you have a Final Four team.

Of course, all it takes is that one out of ten game.

I had Houston in my FF. Sure Purdue has a 10% chance to win if they play like the AL or first Mich games at home.....but Houston's D, length and physicality will likely prevent that. Houston rebounds like crazy and scores in the paint at will. They are extremely well coached and will make things difficult for Purdue & Smith & btw they also shoot the 3 well.
Houston by 10-20.
I agree with a 10-20 point margin. Sampson is a great defensive coach and their length/athleticim is going to be make things very tricky for us offensively. I can see Loyer being taken completely out of the game. Heide or Colvin, possibly both, need to make a difference for us to have a chance, imo.

Houston is not super tall which benefits TKR and Furst a lot.
Our rebounding has been stellar the past 2 games.
If our guards bring their best D, we can run with these guys.
Have to defend the 3 point shot well as they shoot nearly 40% as a team.
A week off helps immensely too......especially for Smith.
Play loose, have fun!
Furst will be completley out of his league in this one. Dont' be deceived by Houston's roster size. They play a lot of 6'8/6'9 guys (Howard being one of them) that have 7'5'ish wing spans. They are VERY long and athletic all over the place. Only chance for Furst is wide open layups or dunks and even then I woudn't be confident he can finish as we saw yesterday.

I don't see Tennessee fans rooting for Purdue. Not after what we've done to them the last few years. They are still in my mentions on X talking shit.
Funny you should mention that. I wore a Purdue shirt to a wing bar here in Jacksonville and Vols fans started talking shit about the past, from Zack getting favorable calls to being robbed in the Music City Bowl. Vols are the biggest whiners in college sports. Most SEC fans cant stand them and call them out as the worst in the conference. That says a lot for the SEC to call you a whiner.

Purdue has a puncher’s chance.

Problem is— for all his sliminess— Sampson is far and away the best coach we’ve faced in awhile,

I fear he’ll know exactly how to neutralize what Purdue does best, and he has the talent to play that way indefinitely.
... with the No. 1 D in the country. Yikes!

If only we could bring Jones or Zach back for another year (or while we’re pretending … Ivey). The main question is figuring out who Braden is going to guard, as their starting guards 6’1, 6’3 and 6’4 (with the 6’4 guy being the “smallest” and their main ball distributor)
I'd take Ivey back if he has learned to pass the ball when there's 3 guys on him and he's driving to the basket (drove me nuts!)!

I rarely bet Purdue and I never place a bet against them. That being said taking Houston -7.5 is a very good bet.

Wasn’t cryer recruited by Purdue and wasn’t it report that he wanted to go here? Maybe I’m misremembering the player

He had a boatload of offers, Painter and staff definitely recruited him, and there was plenty of interest on both sides - official visit and a home visit. Think it was down to Baylor, LSU, and Purdue. I don't remember all of the circumstances.....possibly when Jaden Ivey committed. I do recall it was right after Carsen Edwards phenomenal showing in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, and Edwards came from the Houston metro area - Cryer is from Katy, just West of Houston.

About the only thing they don't do well is they foul a lot and opponent's get free throws.
TKR better be ready for the FT line and to foul out their front line. Roberts is SUPER physical and I feel TKR is too. If they don’t already know, America is about to find out who TKR is
