Purdue to compete in 2017 World University Games

Now this is cool, and I would think could be used as a recruiting tool by Painter. Also, just maybe, it could sway some kids decisions on staying one more year rather than heading to the NBA. CS is going no matter what after this year, so not referring to him.

Agree, this is definitely a positive or recruiting except for non-citizens. Like Kostas?

I assume he could play as a student at a US university and a resident.

Could be wrong though. I doubt that the requirements for this are as strict as say the actual olympics.

The article states that Purdue players must be US citizens.

Curiously, it also talks about "Chinese Taipei". Kinda like saying "American West Lafayette". Or perhaps it is a way to not offend China by calling Taipei part of Taiwan. But then I did some Googling and found that this is exactly the correct way to refer to Taiwan in the context of the IOC. Oh well, politics and sports.

It looks like Kansas did this in 2015 and added Nic Moore (from SMU) to the team as well. I'd bet we probably do this seeing as we will be pretty thin with potentially CS, Edwards and Haas leaving early.

I thought that was a weird phrasing also. Thanks for looking up.

All three will likely go through the process but I doubt anyone other than Swanigan actually stays in. Edwards and Haas will be one year away from a degree (if that) and I don't see how either is likely to be projected as a first round pick which is the usual barometer for those decisions. I doubt Swanigan turns himself into a first rounder either but that may not matter to him as he wasn't even close this year and apparently still considered leaving early.

I could see Edward's being a late first rounder if he plays the entire season like he did at the end of last season.

I dunno about Haas. He is Highly productive in the limited minutes he gets. Theoretically his production should go up as his minutes do.

How long a stretch do you think he can go running up and down the court in an NBA game? He hopefully has a place in the NBA some day, but I don't think it's as a starter or getting drafted in the first round (which admittedly might not be his barometer but I'm working under the assumption it is). Now if he comes out this year and runs the court like a gazelle and averages 30+ minutes a game for Purdue and keeps a high level of productivity then maybe his NBA stock goes up a bunch. I just think it will be tough for him to make that jump in one year but I'd love to see it.

Do you think this will help with the 2017 recruiting class? Now if a player commits to Purdue they have a chance to win a medal and represent our country. I would think this would encourage some kids to sign with Purdue.

Lots of pressure. Now if we lose all we're going to hear is how we let the country down.

You're already looking at it the wrong way. It's a great recruiting tool! Plus if they need to, they can probably add a ringer or two from another school to solidify team Purdue/USA at WUG.

Don't get me wrong I love that Purdue is playing in this. I think it's great for the school and the program. I just don't want to listen to all the BS if for some reason Purdue was to lose

Okay, I'll personally promise you that I won't post about Painter and the staff if they lose games in the 2017 WUG (but I'll likely be thinking it if it would play out in that kind of fashion). For now, it's all about believing that they will be prepared when the time comes.

Considering the U.S. has only won twice since 2001, it wouldn't and shouldn't be a surprise if Purdue doesn't take gold.

Lol, don't start making excuses for them. That's probably true, but they'll have to go into it with the mentality that they're going to win every game.

Bump.

Was looking through the press release and it looks like Haarms won't be eligible to play since he's not a US citizen, too bad, hope he at least gets to practice with the teams as they prepare. Wonder how many practices they are allowed to get ready for this trip.

Have to think we'll go out and snag a player or two for depth, especially without Haarms.

So who will it be?

I'd say go nab Thomas Bryant for post depth if he's still eligible and not NBA bound.

Grab a quick guard....Glynn Watson?

I would be completely against taking any players from teams that we will play.

I think you can only take a 12 man roster, so with Biggie likely leaving and Haarms not allowed, that leaves 11 and I expect at the very least to get another incoming freshman or a grad transfer big. If we don't and have and availabe spot, I would like Wilson from Michigan or the shot blocker from Minny.

Or take a couple of grad transfers prospects looking for a new home to see how they fit on the team/sell them on a spot. Wonder if that was Kansas's pitch to Moore.

It would be odd adding a player from the same conference, knowing that it's a near certainty that you will play against his team next season but if the parties involved don't mind, then I would ask either Reggie Lynch (Minnesota), Mike Watkins (Penn State), or Tony Carr (Penn State) if they would like to join the squad.

Just looking at the top shot-blockers of this past regular season I'd be happy with any of these players being asked and accepting an invitation to join the '17-'18 Purdue team in the WUG as well: Ben Lammers (Georgia Tech), Brandon Gilbeck (WIU: Purdue played them this past season), and Tai Odiase (UIC)
