Purdue played poorly, give IU credit

I'm excited about the future. With Jacobsen returning physically stronger and a year of Brantley lessons, Burgess on the wing, Harris and Cox in the backcourt. They provide a great cast to go with the senior years of Smith, Loyer, and TKR providing stability and leadership. We're looking at years of deep runs if we can keep them together.

Still need to hit the portal for a couple of dudes.

rivalry games are hard to predict. i remember losing by 41 down south then beating them in a close game at mackey. i believe painter was on that squad

I remember having tears of joy and thankfulness when we got that slim victory at Mackey (following that 41 point loss) at Ass Hall.

Happy with the win. I'm jumping on the fire Mike Woodson bandwagon only Calipari has done less with the talent level Woodson has. Older teams are the way to go these days when you can't win with a custom-built team it has to come down to coaching. Here is what I think has happened between IU and Purdue. IU chose to play a weak non-conference schedule they avoided losses to Auburn and Marquette on the road but playing cupcakes leaves you unprepared for league play where there are no cupcakes. IMO Woodson lost this game and the Maryland game in November. It's the same thing with freshmen they struggle because they have no experience in certain environments. Why pay over 5 million to players you try and hide from adversity? Woodson no matter how much IU spends won't be a Painter or Izzo type of coach and neither will any of his assistants. If the coach doesn't trust his players, they won't trust him. Been there done that! Well clearly IU hasn't.

They cannot do better than Woody from my pov. I hope they give him more time.

In that one "Inside the huddle" segment after Purdue gave up 2 offensive rebounds and then hit a 3, Painter was getting on Burgess saying something about "You gotta jump".
When you see the replay, twice the ball went flying right by Burgess off the rim. Granted, those were weird bounces but his reaction time was a little slow and led to the extra possessions. Probably just an experience thing of realizing you have to be locked in on every single possession.

and there was "one" time he moved some bodies to haul in a board. Big guys take longer usually, but I like his metrics and seems to have a great attitude. I'm a buy on all of the freshmen at this time.

I’ve noticed Burgess doesn’t keep his hands in ready position. He’s late to get to those unexpected bounces or quick passes. Something that he can hopefully develop over the summer.

Yes - the game is still a little fast for him.....slightly slower to react to some missed shots - a couple of those on Friday evening. It will come for him, though.....in due course.

yes, i was there as i have been since 1970. just goes to show how a rivalry game is unlike any other game. there should have been zero chance of beating iu yet it was a glorious victory. painter was on that team

i did miss all the games during the covid year unfortunately as did everyone else. in the old days, students didnt get season tickets but there were plenty of guys on my floor who didnt go but would pick up tickets for me as they did it by class.

Well, I have no idea how many games I have been to, but can state for certainty that between seeing live, on TV, or in the car on the radio that "maybe" I've missed 5 or 6 in the slightly over 50 years of the recent past in some form. I've been known to tell my sisters to not call if Purdue was on TV should I be home (back when we had land lines), and in my selfishness have not appreciated if someone scheduled something without checking the Purdue schedule. I can't dictate Purdue's schedule and so arrangements outside that schedule are appreciated.

It's definitely a speed of the game thing. Although I like the fact that he's not afraid to launch an open 3. Will be interesting to see if Paint continues to give him the green light.

Probably depends on the situation, but I won't be surprised if he AND Jacobsen both are allowed looks if they prove they can hit them. If so Purdue will have an opportunity to play two bigs that can go out and play inside as matchups dictate when needed...something I wished for a while.

It would certainly open up the playbook if Purdue's 5s could step out and consistently hit the 3pt--like Zach Edy who was 100% from 3pt line (maybe he was 1 of 2).

Seriously, if Purdue's offensive rotation can bring the big guy out along with the opposing team's big guy then that creates some wrinkles not seen much at Purdue.

Then other thing that has to change is we need guys who can quickly put up a shot behind 3pt. I saw a lot of passing against IU where I thought they should have put up the shot. Do the shot fake to get the guy in the air and flying pass you, then side step and shoot. We only seem to make the really wide open shots.

Fletch is very good in sidestepping, but that doesn't come into play as much because teams are staying at home on D more, meaning the close outs are not as long and they close out more controlled and with less distance to cover. Doing this opens it up for Trey some due to spacing, but allows better 3 pt coverage.

Hopefully they can do Purdue as solid and play well enough to win vs MSU and UM. Get over the hump in those games.
