What are some of the "points of emphasis" (outside of obvious answers) for Purdue, in order to play well and beat Penn State on Saturday?

Contain Shep Garner as he has an ability to score in bunches. His scoring is down this year but that is because he has a better supporting cast. PSU is a decent team that has an ability to beat a team like Purdue in an away game setting because of a guy like Shep Garner and a host of young talent that is getting better as the season goes on. However, this is typically where we start to see the freshman hit a wall and struggle with the long haul of a college season.

If Purdue controls tempo, limits their turnovers, passes the ball on offense and plays team defense like they did against Illinois (I would say very similar to PSU), Purdue should win by 12-15 points.

Purdue: 84
PSU: 68

The good news is that it doesn't look like either of their starting big men can shoot 3's.

they dont appear to be great from the 3 point line.. that makes me confident being at home. They dont have much size either. If we get just 1 of their bigs in foul trouble they will be in big trouble

The key to this game will be our PAINT defense ! Penn State has two good, quick guards who will FULLY utilize high ball picks to go to the rim. Once the ball gets to the rim area, bad things usually happen. (They get lots of layups, dunks and use the drives to set up Garner for easy 3 pt shots on the wing.

This is how they got 49 easy pts (layups, dunks, freethrows) against Michigan St. If they do the same thing against us, we will have a tight game. Only two teams have scored that many "easy" points against us. (Ohio State had 49 & Nova had 54) I hope Matt watched tape of that game and the team doesn't look past them. (could be a classic trap game, if they do)

I think we get them in Mackey because we should shoot well at home, but the game in PA could be one of our 3 toughest games remaining.

Yeah, Purdue can sag off of #11 Lamar Stevens, #24 Mike Watkins, and #44 Julian Moore when/if they catch the ball on the perimeter. None of them are 3PT shooters. Guard/wing #23 Josh Reaves is also not much of a threat from behind the arc.

In man-to-man D, #10 Tony Carr and #33 Shep Garner will likely be the toughest matchups. #0 Payton Banks could be a tough matchup but the majority of Banks' FG attempts are 3's, so if Purdue really keys on him on the perimeter and doesn't allow many transition opportunities for Penn State, he will be contained.

Can their guards shoot the ball? If not, why would we worry about a high ball screen? The 1 -5 ball screen effectiveness starts with fear of a 1 that can shoot. I don't know enough about their guards to have an idea

Yes ! they can - they are very talented Philly kids who have really good shooting skills. (especially if they get in a rythmn) That's why I think they will be a handfull in PA. Like us, they shoot a LOT better at home

Did you get a bobble-head, Dry?
Yes we did. My adult son was very happy. He has loved Gene since he was a little kid.

Short story about Gene: Shortly after Gene retired he was often in attendance for PU games. My son would make my wife bring his book in her purse to every game we attended and he would look for Gene in the stands. He spotted him prior to a game finally and approached him for an autograph. Gene could not have been more gracious. He signed the book and had my son sit beside him and talked with him for a few minutes. Big impression on a young boy. Fast forward to yesterday and that "little" boy was very happy to see and hear Gene speak to the crowd.

Good father/son day yesterday.
