OSU has talent but hasn't been very impressive. I'm really curious to see how we bounce back on the road after a tough loss at home.

Hopefully less turnovers, better shooting, and better coaching are all part of the recipe to winning tomorrow.

I, too, thought this would be the year that OSU turns the corner. They have a lot of talent and athleticism.

OSU is always an athletic team....And if the Minny game showed anything... Our guards may have a problem guarding theirs...I just hope they don't make one of their players look like an all-american.

Make them shoot jumpers and don't get beat off the dribble by their guards which the recipe for success against Purdue!!!
But , if they start sticking a bunch of 3's, then I'm not sure. Zone??

They've got length and have some tough matchups for our guards. I like the idea of going smaller on them, starting Vince rather than Haas. Then you have a forward in Tate at only 6'4" that always seems to give us problems. Hate playing at OSU no matter what the odds makers say.

Hopefully the Minny game was a wake up call.

Next 3 games crucial to Boilers......will they be 4-1, 3-2 (or unimaginable 1-4...lose @ OSU and we are 1-2 and that is fairly ugly right there).

This game concerns me

Me, too. And it's not just OSU's athleticism--which has caused Purdue problems in the past. IIRC, Purdue has won only once in Value City Arena. Even solid Purdue teams have lost there.

My gut tells me guard play will determine this one. Mathias, PJ, Edwards, et. al. have to keep OSU's guards from getting to the rim.

Also, I wonder what the crowd will be like.

This will be OSU's first home game since December 22 and first since the ugly Fiesta Bowl beat-down. Will the fans still be dejected, or will they be out for blood? Are the OSU students back on campus yet?

Typically when we've played at OSU under Painter they've had a top 5 NBA draft pick playing for them. They don't have that this year so I'm not writing this one off as "oh well we never win there so I'm not expecting much". They've got good players and are capable of beating us but we'll have the best player on the floor tonight imo.

You know Lyle was not effective last year I seem to recall. I'm sure he will be ready to go. Tate has always had good games against Purdue...and Loving has been a thorn in Purdue's side for a while. Purdue had Diop as a choice recruit when he announced for the Buck. I look for a difficult game and would love to be wrong.

Ya, I remember the Diop recruitment well. All-in-all, though, I think I'd rather have Vince Edwards anyway.

Tate might be tough to handle, but I know that Purdue's 2-1 vs. OSU since he's been there. As a lefty and an undersized forward, Tate is kind of like a poor man's Kenny Battle (forward for Illinois in the late '80's).

Vince has had a much better career so far. Diop wasn't good enough to play much at all as a freshman...was OSU that loaded? Vince has done well under Matt and Purdue
Last year both posted very similar stats. Diop is down a little from last year, but still avg about 10.

I think Bates-Diop has had some injury problems throughout his career thus far, so that's hurt him some but V. Edwards is definitely better than KBD in some areas (i.e. perimeter shooting). I remember back in 2013 when some of the recruiting discussion on here was about both of them and KBD was the first choice of many and VE was the second but it's worked out pretty well so far with VE.

Of the projected starters, who will guard who in the man-to-man to start the game?

My projections:

-CE on JaQuan Lyle
-P. Thompson on Kam Williams
-Mathias on Jae'Sean Tate
-VE on Marc Loving
-Swanigan on Trevor Thompson

Was it announced that VE is starting? I'd be surprised if Haas doesn't.

"Projected"

I'm just projecting based on Haas' recent struggles/lack of productivity on the offensive end (turnovers, hesitating, not finishing strong, etc.) and his inability (not really his fault IMO: it's common sense that a guy that big won't be real quick) to protect the rim and contain dribblers on the defensive end in man-to-man.

OSU wasn't loaded. Matta just refused to play a rotation and wore his starters out. It's something he's been very prone to do.
both are true. Matta has never been hurt for talent at OSU and Diop never hit the floor as a freshman hardly ever

Were you surprised, boilerzz?
I was. Good projection on your part.

I'm still not even convinced it was the right move against OSU. Against OSU, I'd have rather we put Vince in for Carsen to start. Getting Thompson and Tate in foul trouble was important and Haas was most effective at drawing fouls on Thompson and Biggie was most effective at drawing fouls on Tate. PJ could have checked Kam Williams, Dakota on Lyle and Vince on Loving.

I'm not sure I wouldn't have started the bigs like you suggest either, but unsure how that might effect the youngster Carsen as well. Coaches are damn near always in a lose-lose situation. :)
