First of all I hope to see a bunch of you in Huntington. I think you will find our tailgating to be hospitable and civil. You should not have any trouble getting plenty of food and drink if you stop in and strike up a conversation at a tailgate. Anyway, the real reason I am here is to see if I could get a little information on the 2015 Boilermakers football squad. Any information would be appreciated. Good luck finishing up on your 2015 recruiting group.

I hope you like question marks in the breakdown.

QB: Here's the picks: One lost confidence, one showed promise early, faded late, one is a RS-FR, and one has a torn ACL
HB: New starter here: The top candidates all seem to be in the 5'9" 200ish area with a bowling ball type approach.
WR: We are counting on two small guys to fully recover from injuries, a JuCo, and a JuCo Frenchman.
OL: All five/six starters return, with a couple of impressive guys coming off redshirt.

DL: Replacing our DE, but our NT and DT both return. Not a lot of depth
LB: Strongest defensive position. Three starters return. Fourth starter is a DE/LB hybrid who was our best recruit last year.
CB: Should be decent. Our starting safety (Williams) last year may move back to corner which makes it a strong position.
S: Depending on Williams this will be either a strong spot, or one with potential.

ST: Both kickers return, but new long snapper.

Question for you: Who replaces Cato and how good is he expected to be?

I have not posted much lately because I am still disgusted with how Purdue football closed out the season. All I will say is we wont miss the senior starters, because except for Landon Feichter and Justin Sinz,,they didn't give Purdue much anyway. And of course,Akeem Hunt had a good senior year.

You probably can expect our offense to put up 24 points at best. Defense is a wild card. Probably will have the QB and Recievers struggle but I think our run game will be decent.

Any idea about game time yet? Seriously considering the relatively short drive from Lexington to Huntington (at least compared to West Lafayette). I still regret the trip to Cincinnati to open the 2013 season when we got smashed and the stadium ran out of ice, water and just about everything else as fans in the stands were passing out from the heat. What's the stadium/parking like at Marshall? Any recommendations for visitor for before/after the game?

My guess on the MU Qb situation...

Michael Birdsong 6'4 240 jr. big strong and physical transferred from James Madison, scout team mvp 2015. I believe he will get the starting job. Will have 2 camps under his belt, and a year in the system.

Chase Layton 6'5. Fres

Really high on this kid. Came in early and practiced with the team for this past bowl prep. Probably will get a red shirt

Cole Garvin 6'0
played in mop up. Pretty good.

Gunnar Holcombe 6'3
don't know much about

Cato will be hard to replace.
Offense should be good. If a qb steps up we can be really good.
Qb. ?
Receivers. Deep
Rb. Deep with a stud
OL. Have to replace the center spot. Should be pretty good

"d" fast w/ good corner play "man coverage"
DL small, fast, deep. You guys should be able to pound us, but I don't see u getting the edges.
lb. They are some new faces, but I believe will be better with trancfers, and guys that sat out coming in
Corners. Good and pretty deep. Have to replace one really good corner.
s. Good

I will answer the marshall game day questions tonight

How do you think Cato will do in the NFL? Watched the Bowl game and his passes were insane at times.

Too small, in my opinion....not sure his mechanics are the best either.

The next guy in line, Birdsong.....if he gets crowned the starter, as everyone is predicting, and has good numbers, has size, speed and arm strength that will make NFL scouts drool. We shall see

Thanks Herdattack. Sorry for the bad info.

I made a couple of visits to the Bearcats stadium. Took a leak in a porta potty in the stadium gates! Marshall's stadium is pretty well equipped And functional.. New turf... Concessions seem to run pretty smoothly. trough Style urinals not so pleasant. We still don't sale beer! Able to reenter If you slip out at halftime to visit a near by establishment. Overall a nice little stadium. Lots better than cinci.

Question for you: Who replaces Cato and how good is he expected to be?
I'll chime in my 2 cents on Marshall for 2015:

QB: TimeToWin broke this down pretty well. General buzz is that Birdsong has a lot of potential. Despite getting a good amount of clean-up duty in 4th quarters last season, the staff didn't really let Holcombe throw the ball much. He basically just handed the ball off. Sticking with this, the assumption would be that the starting job is between Holcombe and Birdsong.

RB: Devon Johnson had an absolutely monstrous breakout season in 2014 as a junior and will apparently return next season. It was his first season playing RB for us (he switched from TE last offseason) and he racked up 1,767 yards and 17 TD's, averaging 8.6 yards per carry and that was all while being hampered by injuries. In my opinion, Devon was only 100% for the first 7 or 8 games, but he had solid production in 10-11 games. Behind Devon, we'll probably have Remi Watson (546 yards on 100 attempts with 6 TD's in 2014) and Steward Butler (798 yards on 107 attempts with 7 TD's in 2014) trading the #2 and #3 RB spots.

WR: Significant returners are Angelo Jean-Louis (490 yards on 21 catches with 6 TD's as a FR), Davonte Allen (544 yards on 22 catches with 4 TD's), Hyleck Foster (254 yards on 18 catches with 3 TD's as a FR), and Justin Hunt (119 yards on 7 catches with no TD's). I personally expect Jean-Louis to be the #1 target going forward. He had a solid season and some great cathces as a freshman.

TE: Significant loss of Eric Frohnapfel, but a lot of great moments in 2014 from Ryan Yuracheck. He's a 6'3, 235lb freshman who walked away from 2014 with 149 yards on 17 catches. Doc's system seems to utilize TE pretty well. For reference, top TE Frohnapfel had 420 yards on 37 catches with 5 TD's. There's no way to know if Yuracheck will match that production, considering Froh was 6'7", but Yuracheck will get his fair share of throws.

OL: We've got some good size returning on the OL with Clint Van Horn (310lb junior) and several others. Sorry, like your average college football fan, I didn't follow the OL very much. I'm a terrible person. However, we only lose 2 seniors and I didn't recognize one of those 2 names.

DL: DL will probably take our most considerable hit as an overall unit, with 4 solid seniors graduating. However, juniors Armonze Daniel and Jarquez Sameul, as wll as Joe Massaquoi showed a lot of upside in 2014.

LB: Losing Neville Hewitt is going to hurt us. I see a lot of opportunity and potential for Stefan Houston and Raheim Huskey as underclassmen with DJ Hunter and Evan McKelvey getting the majority of playing time as 2015 seniors.

S: We lose no safeties to graduation. This is going to be a really strong group, headlined by AJ Leggett, Taj Letman and Tiquan Lang.

ST: We lose our senior PK who was pretty consistent but our punter comes back for his senior season and he had some incredibly good kicks in 2014. He averaged 44 yards per punt in 2014 with a 64 yarder being his long on the season.

Of course, it's way way early in the offseason and none of us know which, if any, true freshman will get significant playing time or if we'll have some out of nowhere breakout like we did in 2014 with Devon Johnson. In my personal opinion, the only real serious concern we have is at QB and that's not because we don't have talent - it's just because Cato was so great. If we have someone that can step in and be just above-average at QB, I expect we will contend for the CUSA Championship again.

2014 was one of our best teams in program history, but Doc has the depth build really well. I really wish we had you guys as game 3 or game 4 of the season so we could have some time to break in the QB game beforehand, but I'm still really excited to have Purdue come to Huntington.

Not a problem....chalk it up to the lack of names on jerseys.

That's not a switch you hear very often...glad it worked out for the kid.

I'd like to add, that I had a great time when Marshall game to Purdue in 2012(I think).

Also Marshall is 21-3 in their last 24 games.

Purdue Grad, Huntington native here.

Devon Johnson's dominance can not be understated. He absolutely trucked people last year. May have had 15-20 rushes of over 4o yards last year and he runs in a straight line, no time to waste going east/west.

As others have stated, expect Birdsong to replace Cato. He has all the tools, and has been a practice hero, but it will be his first FBS start.

I hope you find Huntington hospitable. The tailgate scene picks up about 4 hrs before kickoff, but with a B1G team in town, I hope that picks up earlier. The easiest parking lot will be 3 blocks before you get to the stadium 3rd ave & approx 24th st) but they dont allow tailgating there. There are several bars/restaurants in the area including Fat Patty's (a popular burger joint that has all the standard deep fried american food and cold beer, it will be packed), Mancini's is a pizza joint directly across the street. There is a Jimmy Johns & Chipotle within a few blocks if you want to order some catering instead of shopping for grub.

If you are staying on Friday, I suggest going to Rocco's in Ceredo. It is about 15-20 minutes from downtown and the best Italian restaurant in the state. Jim's Steak & Spaghetti is a downtown institution. A lunch counter type place that has been here for 80 years. Order the spaghetti or fish sandwich (the fish is the best!)

The stadium concourse will be packed with this big of a game, so get to your seats early. The stadium is a horseshoe with no access to cross at the open side of the shoe (where the facility building/locker rooms are located). Otherwise, You can walk all the way around the stadium while inside.

Purdue's team buses will park on the east side of the facility building, on the indoor practice facility side of the stadium to drop the team off pre/post game.

Best route from WL is 65 to Indy, 74 to Cincy, then take the AA highway (Ky 9) to I-64 (grayson, ky). 45 minutes on i-64 and you are in Huntington. Total drive time is 5 1/2 to 6 hrs. Incidentally, the afore mentioned Rocco's is right on the WV side of the KY border and you will pass exit 1 on your way in.

Sorry for the rambling. Hopefully someone will find pieces of this useful.

BOILER UP & GO HERD!

This will be interesting to see what the spread is with so many Q marks at skill positions for both teams in an opener. My Wild ass guess is Marshall -10.

Purdue graduate but my daughter played volleyball at Marshall and it is very special place. I highly recommend the trip to all Boilers. Great fans and great atmosphere! Should be a fun game.

Herd fans, has the Herd Cafe closed down?

For lazy tailgaters, I recommend a quick pit stop at Steak Escape, just across the street, southwest of the stadium.

It's player-approved. We stopped there a few summers ago (just before we played) and met some sizable members of the Herd who came in after workouts. Tasty cheesesteaks, but my wife was half hoping to meet Matthew McConaughey..

I'll miss watching Cato go wild, but I think he'll make it. He's a winner.

There are two downtown Huntington hotels- Holiday Inn and Pullman Plaza. The other hotels in the area are all a mile or more from the stadium. I suggest the Holiday Inn, it's a newer property and recently renovated. Pullman Plaza has a nice restaurant and bar in the lobby but the rooms are a little dated. You should probably make reservations ASAP. They usually fill up fast.

The two downtown hotels are in the Pullman Square area where a number of restaurants are located and a block over from most of the downtown bars. It's a bit of a hike(10 blocks), but you can walk from the downtown hotels to Joan C. Edwards Stadium. The route would take you through Marshall's campus and by the plane crash memorial fountain at the Student Center.

The stadium is in an urban area so parking is mostly reserved near the stadium and first come, first serve in the surrounding blocks. Here are a few links to take a look at...

Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites- Huntington Civic Arena

Pullman Plaza Hotel

Pullman Square

The Marshall Hall of Fame Cafe is currently closed while they renovate the interior.

Excellent news. The BTN never likes to show Purdue now anyways since we expanded.

for a team that has won 4 games in the last 2 seasons, I was surprised at how man times we were on last season.

Gotcha, so the main C-USA football broadcast partners are CBS Sports TV, Fox Sports 1, and then regional Fox Networks?

Do any C-USA home games end up on the ESPN family of networks?

Nope...The C-USA Football Championship Game is on ESPN, but no regular season home games.

Correct. When C-USA left ESPN for its current contract, the worldwide leader sued. Part of the settlement was ESPN keeping rights to the C-USA Championship Game.

This is the final year of C-USA's primary contract with Fox Sports and CBS Sports Network. Fox gets its choice of the first 10 C-USA games, then CBSSN gets to choose 10 and then Fox gets the next 10. Can't imagine C-USA would move this game to Sunday to put it on a regional network. Only other C-USA game that weekend of note would be Miss St at Southern Miss.

I will be there on 9/6/15 will 4 other Purdue grads. Just hoping the tailgate experience is fun, because once the game starts, unless Hazell can work miracles, I'm not expecting much from the team. Getting bottom of the B-10 recruiting classes is killing us now and for years to come. Need to rectify that situation.
