First of all I hope to see a bunch of you in Huntington. I think you will find our tailgating to be hospitable and civil. You should not have any trouble getting plenty of food and drink if you stop in and strike up a conversation at a tailgate. Anyway, the real reason I am here is to see if I could get a little information on the 2015 Boilermakers football squad. Any information would be appreciated. Good luck finishing up on your 2015 recruiting group.
I hope you like question marks in the breakdown.
QB: Here's the picks: One lost confidence, one showed promise early, faded late, one is a RS-FR, and one has a torn ACL
HB: New starter here: The top candidates all seem to be in the 5'9" 200ish area with a bowling ball type approach.
WR: We are counting on two small guys to fully recover from injuries, a JuCo, and a JuCo Frenchman.
OL: All five/six starters return, with a couple of impressive guys coming off redshirt.
DL: Replacing our DE, but our NT and DT both return. Not a lot of depth
LB: Strongest defensive position. Three starters return. Fourth starter is a DE/LB hybrid who was our best recruit last year.
CB: Should be decent. Our starting safety (Williams) last year may move back to corner which makes it a strong position.
S: Depending on Williams this will be either a strong spot, or one with potential.
ST: Both kickers return, but new long snapper.
Question for you: Who replaces Cato and how good is he expected to be?
I'll chime in my 2 cents on Marshall for 2015:
QB: TimeToWin broke this down pretty well. General buzz is that Birdsong has a lot of potential. Despite getting a good amount of clean-up duty in 4th quarters last season, the staff didn't really let Holcombe throw the ball much. He basically just handed the ball off. Sticking with this, the assumption would be that the starting job is between Holcombe and Birdsong.
RB: Devon Johnson had an absolutely monstrous breakout season in 2014 as a junior and will apparently return next season. It was his first season playing RB for us (he switched from TE last offseason) and he racked up 1,767 yards and 17 TD's, averaging 8.6 yards per carry and that was all while being hampered by injuries. In my opinion, Devon was only 100% for the first 7 or 8 games, but he had solid production in 10-11 games. Behind Devon, we'll probably have Remi Watson (546 yards on 100 attempts with 6 TD's in 2014) and Steward Butler (798 yards on 107 attempts with 7 TD's in 2014) trading the #2 and #3 RB spots.
WR: Significant returners are Angelo Jean-Louis (490 yards on 21 catches with 6 TD's as a FR), Davonte Allen (544 yards on 22 catches with 4 TD's), Hyleck Foster (254 yards on 18 catches with 3 TD's as a FR), and Justin Hunt (119 yards on 7 catches with no TD's). I personally expect Jean-Louis to be the #1 target going forward. He had a solid season and some great cathces as a freshman.
TE: Significant loss of Eric Frohnapfel, but a lot of great moments in 2014 from Ryan Yuracheck. He's a 6'3, 235lb freshman who walked away from 2014 with 149 yards on 17 catches. Doc's system seems to utilize TE pretty well. For reference, top TE Frohnapfel had 420 yards on 37 catches with 5 TD's. There's no way to know if Yuracheck will match that production, considering Froh was 6'7", but Yuracheck will get his fair share of throws.
OL: We've got some good size returning on the OL with Clint Van Horn (310lb junior) and several others. Sorry, like your average college football fan, I didn't follow the OL very much. I'm a terrible person. However, we only lose 2 seniors and I didn't recognize one of those 2 names.
DL: DL will probably take our most considerable hit as an overall unit, with 4 solid seniors graduating. However, juniors Armonze Daniel and Jarquez Sameul, as wll as Joe Massaquoi showed a lot of upside in 2014.
LB: Losing Neville Hewitt is going to hurt us. I see a lot of opportunity and potential for Stefan Houston and Raheim Huskey as underclassmen with DJ Hunter and Evan McKelvey getting the majority of playing time as 2015 seniors.
S: We lose no safeties to graduation. This is going to be a really strong group, headlined by AJ Leggett, Taj Letman and Tiquan Lang.
ST: We lose our senior PK who was pretty consistent but our punter comes back for his senior season and he had some incredibly good kicks in 2014. He averaged 44 yards per punt in 2014 with a 64 yarder being his long on the season.
Of course, it's way way early in the offseason and none of us know which, if any, true freshman will get significant playing time or if we'll have some out of nowhere breakout like we did in 2014 with Devon Johnson. In my personal opinion, the only real serious concern we have is at QB and that's not because we don't have talent - it's just because Cato was so great. If we have someone that can step in and be just above-average at QB, I expect we will contend for the CUSA Championship again.
2014 was one of our best teams in program history, but Doc has the depth build really well. I really wish we had you guys as game 3 or game 4 of the season so we could have some time to break in the QB game beforehand, but I'm still really excited to have Purdue come to Huntington.
