Purdue women's basketball announced a new assistant coach on Tuesday, as April Phillips is set to join staff.

Most of her San Jose State team is in the portal - including their leading scorer - 15 ppg scorer 5'9 G Amiah Simmons.

6'2 SR F Finau Tonga is also in the portal - Averaged 8.7 pts 5 rebs on 58% shooting. She might be good to add some depth at the F position.

This is a really good pickup for the program. She is extremely experienced - is a great recruiter that has a ton of connections as she has been several places. I'm pleasantly surprised because I wasn't expecting someone this experienced. I'm sure she wasn't cheap so this may be a good indication that we are putting some money into the program. I was expecting a relative newby.

Doesn't this suggest that Guyton was forced out? It was never clear to me if this was the case or she just chose to leave. I thought she did a nice job with the bigs this year.

She was let go. It happens. She is not a good recruiter. We need more experienced and well connected coaches. She was neither.

No argument Guyton was a terrible snd lazy hire, but so was Gearlds. No other p4 school would have hired CKG as an assistant, let alone as head coach.
