I honestly don’t know what to think at this point. It’s still baffling to me how last year’s team regressed despite having so many returning players who were in their 2nd/3rd year with CKG, and with one another.
I wanna believe KG is the right person to lead and rebuild this program. I like her energy & bleeds-gold-and-black DNA. Such an upgrade from her predecessor IMHO.
Her description of some of the players she has recruited and signed had me optimistic the team would be markedly better…. “Y’all gonna really like Spider” (Jones)…. “Amiyah’s gonna be amazing when she returns (from injury)” … “Collier is the best pure shooter I’ve ever seen or coached”.
This is year 4. I was bummed when MAS transferred after 1 year. Something seems off. Admittedly, I have yet to watch them, but I do read Mike Carmin’s articles, and those on this site, before and after each game. Not getting the feeling things are improving - but it’s a whole new cast for the most part this season.
Hoping for good things from Swanson and the 2 freshman bigs. Hope springs eternal.

You know, she did compliment SV shortly after assuming the HC position, saying she (SV) helped her become an All-Big10 player and develop her game to go to the WNBA.
But I think she was just being nice and avoiding being negative about her in the immediate aftermath of SV’s dismissal.

Because most of her subsequent comments about who she talks to, mentor-wise, do not mention SV at all. She talks about her HS coach, Kristy Curry, and even her dad. No mention of SV that I’ve heard or seen.

Regardless, it’s something of an OJT situation for sure. Gotta see some positive movement this year - it’s year 4! Gotta happen.

But when CKG first took the job, before SV was fired Katie said most of what she knew of coaching was from Versyp and she been calling her about once a week for advice. She runs all the same schemes as SV did, and they were played out 20 years ago. KG is just a mini Versyp with better people skills and worse ability to adjust in games.

Scoring 49 point to a CUSA team is completely unacceptable. This loss was completely... predictable. I thought it'd be by more actually. We are extremely extremelyyyyy long off from competing against the nation's best and that's obvious. I would say that we have regressed in about every year CKG has been here. Her first 2 seasons was by far the best and that was with a roster essentially filled with SV's leftovers. This roster is essentially all hers and we are not anywhere close to a .500 level ball club. I had high hopes for CKG - she came in with a lot of passion and was a breath of fresh hair compared to what SV drove the program to. IDK if its the weight or expecations but she doesn't seem to have the same aura about her she once did. Much like FB - our AD took the cheap route with an extremely young and relatively inexperienced HC. Would love to be wrong - but you seem to know what their trajectory in after 4 years - and I just don't see CKG being the one to turnaround this program. But the quesiton is - this isn't 1999 anymore. With the new NLI era favoring teams in larger markets - I'm not sure if teams like Purdue in the market we are in can compete with getting the best players who are making more in bigger markets (USC/UCLA) and yes Michael. Female athletes ARE getting paid and the elite are getting quite a bit of money. Paige Bueckers just unveiled her new Nike shoe.

I agree that in the last two years, women's players stated earning big bank off NIL. It's the uglier side of the Clark effect. But like the men, a good coach with a great ability to develop talent and a solid offensive and defensive system could still compete. But it would be an uphill battle. I don't think KG was a cheap hire, but a lazy one. She got the same salary that SV was getting when she would have taken a quarter of that. Even that would have been a 300% raise over what Marian was paying her.

But I don't want Gearlds fired yet, not until Bobo the clown is fired as AD because I have zero faith that he could find a competent replacement. I am not even sure I trust him to care enough to not just offer the job to the first person he ran into in the hallway.

And I am in no way trying to disagree or argue with you on this one, I think we both can see CKG is in way over her head and Bobo did her a great disservice promoting her to this level before she was ready.

Northwestern will probably finish last, maybe wisconsin. Purdue played two perennial powerhouses and got whooped and lost to a mid major that will probably win close to 30 games again. I think a better barometer this year would be against the Maryland's, Kentucky's, Illinois's. We need to beat a team that is actually better than us once in awhile. That didn't happen last year except illinois?

Yeah I don't like losing to teams by 40 either but South Carolina and Norte Dame are going to do that to alot of teams this year that are even better than us. Heck, South Carolina just beat #15 Iowa St by 40.

The good thing is the revenue sharing taking place next season? That should help even the playing field a bit. Yes NIL collectives will still exist but the revenue sharing, specifically for the P2 conferences should really benefit those teams. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know all the ins and outs of how the pie would be shared. I assume Football would get the most, than MBB, followed by WBB.

It's almost as if - experienced transfers - not true, averaged ranked freshmen - are more likely to be able to compete against decently talented teams right out the gate. Thus why this whole "stacking classes" thing is not going to work - or if it eventually does - that mean's years of losing teams - and what impact, highly ranked HS recruit - that CAN instantly produce - wants to go to a losing program over a program that has routinely won and went to NCAA tournaments? ... not many! Also - this is year 4. What player has this coaching staff proven they can "develop" - because if we aren't landing top 50 talent out high school - we need coaches who can develop talent. Smith is the absolute worst example to show that they are talent developers.

This whole idea of - building through recruiting high school talent - only works if this high school talent - is top talent. Having average ranked true freshmen - especially in the post - go against super talented and experienced WOMEN - is not a recipe for any success - just 40 and 50 pt losses.

We better hope that Poole is the real deal and plays.... sometime... we can keep and develop McCarthy and KP - and our two incoming post players are the real deal. Because we don't have too many other building blocks on this team.

Agree to disagree on this. Collier is not a P4 level player. I don't think she deserves the minutes she is getting. Bass fills in for the competent posts we have lost transferring out over the last three years. Keep those players and Bass is just a depth piece. Lombard is a player, no doubt about it. But MTSU did not build up that massive powerhouse they are through transfers or top 100 ranked kids. Vandy has not been built up with massive infusions of transfers, and not many top 100 ranked kids, but Ralph has the program miles ahead of us, and started in a very similar hole than Purdue was when she and Gearlds were hired. UMinn did not turn it around with a massive infusion of transfers and top 100 talent, but with quality coaching and developing the kids she had. That is where we are absolutely failing. We are not developing the kids we get. There is talent on this roster according to the recruiting rankings, good enough to not be a conference doormat. But it is not showing out for this coaching staff because they are not being nurtured, developed and utilized in a completent offensive system.

Our best players, besides MA who came already with a great skill set - have been transfers from other programs. in her 4th year with the program - KG has yet to prove she can develop anyone to be a better player now than when they came into the program.... and this is year 4. We should be seeing results. Our best player this year is a grad transfer.

Those two kids are attrubuting 40 ppg combined of their 85 ppg as a team. Stacking recruiting classes and winning CAN work. But you have to A) Develop 50-60 talent and B) Recruit a few STUDS. 3) Have talented veterans who produce. Three things Ralph is doing and CKG is simply not.

Totally agree. And Ralph was still available when Bobo the clown hired Gearlds..... I stated when she was hired that hiring an NAIA coach with no D1 experience was a very risky strategy with lottery odds of actually working. We could have hired Ralph, we could have made a strong run at Green, at the MSU coach when she was still in a mid major conference, at the UMinn coach...... but our clown AD went with the untried legacy because he could not be bothered to actually hire a more likely competent coach for a sport he clearly gives zero shits about.

There is a reason no AD was dumb or lazy enough to hire an NAIA coach for a P4 position, and we are seeing why.

I honestly thought MA had an average skill set through her frosh year, what made her BIG frosh of the way was her motor(and a bunch of playing time). She missed alot of bunnies, but she did quicken her long wind up jumper as the season went along.

Idk how common it is for women to make a huge 2nd year jump like you see sometimes in the men's games. If I had to guess, it's more likely for top 25 recruits than top 80 recruits like CKG has.

All this to say, yeah i would love to see more players make a bigger jump, that's why I want to see how the rest of this season plays out. Jones and Swanson are still early in their career, lets see what they look like towards the end of year 2.

In the women's game also, biggest improvement is between freshman and sophomore year. And top 30-80 generally have bigger jumps than top 30s because the top 30s are already further along in their development. CKG has yet to show she can improve ANYONE year over year. MAS got better from all the time and reps she got. There was little evidence any of that was from coaching.

And yet she did better with those Versyp trained recruits than she has in the last year+. ALL of her best performing players were initially coached in college by someone that could develop them. This year looks like it might be tough to get to 10 wins the poor play we have seen so far. Without the ability todevelop talent, she is DOA as a college coach. And I see no evidence that she has the vaguest idea of how to make players better or develop a comprehensive gameplan or offensive scheme.
