Purdue Defensive Scheme

I am sure we have discussed this before, but I need a refresher.

Is Purdue still using the 3-4 as it's base scheme? I never really liked the idea of Purdue running a 3-4 because of the challenge of recruiting for the athletes needed for that. With the news I saw today it sounds like the base might be back to a 4-3. any insights?

It's a hybrid of both. The rush end is standing and can drop into coverage on obvious passing downs

I doubt that would impact formation. I expect to see the same d from last year. I think the only adjustment the D needs is more creative ways to get pressure on the QB. They should be an average-ish defense this year.

What what seems to be a strong LB corps along with a pretty athletic group of safeties, I don't think the Steelers' Cover 2 scheme is a bad thing. The big issue with running a cover 2 scheme is having LB's that can run in space along with having a MLB who can drop into coverage and cover the middle of the field or the TE along with stepping in to stop the run. It appears that Purdue has that ability which can create a lot of chances for blitzes and so forth...but we will see if that holds true or not.

Splitting hairs a little, but Im more worried about complexity than scheme. I think they have the right pieces in the right places. Although, Im not entirely sold on Robinson at Rush. He seemed really small last year. And I will believe the safties when I see them, but they sound like they could be decent.

Things like always having the corners on a fixed side of the field to allow the Offense to dictate matchups along with flipping WR's during a no huddle call to allow the D time to adjust to what they see. I think success in 2015 hinges more on this type of stuff.

Not sold on Robinson? He's one of the best athletes on the team. Right now, this team has no one who's better suited to be a rush end than Robinson. He's quick, strong, and a good wrestler. He will only get better.

Hazell hasn't exactly recruited a bumper crop of guys to come in and supplant him now or anytime soon, either.

Not at all. I love hes big dog's son, I love he wrestles, and I love he came here in 2013.

Agree Hazell has severely lacked recruiting his position (at least if looks that way), and Im also not saying he isnt the best we have.

In short, he got stood up a lot last year, and I dont see him becoming the disruptive force the defense needs.
