Rutgers is ranked 77th in the nation in scoring offense. The Scarlet Knights are 132nd in field goal shooting, including 207th in 3-point shooting and 237th in 3-point field goals made per game. They are protective of the basketball, ranked 56th in the country in turnovers per game. On the defensive end, the Scarlet Knights are 228th in scoring defense this season. They are 190th in field goal defense and 244th in 3-point defense. Rutgers is 153rd in the country in forced turnovers. They are 165th in total rebounds per game this season and have played the 84th most difficult schedule in the nation.
Rutgers is led by its two sensational freshmen players - point guard Dylan Harper with per game averages of 21.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.1 steals and forward Ace Bailey with 19.1 points, 7.6 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game. Harper is working his way back from an illness. He started the last game against Wisconsin but was rather ineffective, going scoreless in 15 minutes of action. Rutgers also has an additional presence inside with freshman Lathan Sommerville, at 6’10”, 275-pounds, capable of providing some scoring punch down low, but he’s often used in screens and as a rebounder. He could pose a problem for Purdue in the paint, however, even if he is primarily not looking to score. Jeremiah Williams and transfer from Eastern Michigan, Tyson Acuff, can provide additional scoring in support of Harper and Bailey.
Rutgers is 80th overall in the KenPom ratings, 87th in offensive efficiency and 94th in defensive efficiency. Pace of play for the Scarlet Knights is at an adjusted tempo of 52nd. Purdue is currently 18th overall, 11th in offensive efficiency and 59th defensively. The adjusted tempo for the Boilers' pace of play has increased slightly to 291st.
Look for Purdue to try and contain Harper and Bailey and also try and force Rutgers to score from outside. Rutgers doesn't turn the ball over a whole lot and rely on a lot of action from Harper and Bailey. The Boilers need to do what they have been doing the last few games - keep its turnovers down and all-hands-on-deck off the glass. Fairly straight forward formula for them if they are shooting decently well. Rutgers has been a tough opponent for them the last few seasons, and although the roster has changed for the Scarlet Knights, they have a very solid coach in Steve Pikiell, and he knows what works and what doesn't work against Matt Painter-coached teams.
The Boilers have the experience edge, but Rutgers will be buoyed from the home crowd atmosphere. Harper and Bailey are freshman, but they are very talented, and these are the type of players that can give the Boilers a whole mess of issues when they are on. Purdue would be well served to try and get ahead early and take the crowd out of it a little if they can.
It should be a spirited contest. Purdue has won three straight. Can the Boilers keep things rolling with a second road conference win and make it four straight?
We shall see, starting in about an hour or so.
Boiler up, my friends.
