Purdue at Michigan: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Braden did defer longer than I liked, but there were some D lapses, fumbles and a lot of points lost at the rim. Caleb will bounce back, but there comes a time where you sometimes take the shot if it is a good one during a physical game rather than pass it underneath to a less physical player defended by a more physical player
Colvin did rebound well, those 2 tos hurt bad

Trying not to overreact on a tough loss, but no way we can get anywhere with Zero contribution from the bench. It's just painful to watch Smith and TKR play their asses off and get zero help from the bench.
Really it's the big 2.5. Loyer got 15 but he could have done more and he really was a liability on defense tonight.

Otherwise, Cox is a frosh so hard to get mad at him, same with Harris but Heide and Colvin, I just don't understand the absolute cliff they have gone off and stayed off for most of the season.

We aren't even getting the occasional blow up games anymore from either of them.

He’s pathologically unable to keep the ball high when rebounding or going up for a shot— defenders stuff him over and over again….

Caleb’s level of effort is superb, but the kid can’t finish to save his life!☹️
He may have more success not showing the ball early and leaning into the player to provide the clearance even if it takes him away from a dunk for a two foot shot. Obviously he can’t just go up against a 7’ player without the clearance resulting in a block at the rim. Kid will bounce back…too much character

And one rebound was taken away by another fouling?. However if he has the ball in the lane less than 8 feet away I would like to see him elevate and shoot a soft jumper

I do agree that Cox should have just turned and sprinted down court with the rebound. He's probably just trained to defer to Braden. But he might have been able to get all the way to the rim.

Painter needs to get this team to figure out how to play against a zone because they definitely couldn't figure it out tonight
Zone us all day long. We can’t play it and don’t know how to attack it. Can hit 3s and can’t finish when catch the ball back door. Furst, Heide and Colvin are key and they are not stepping up.

Add Harris in there too. Well guess trust means the whole bench 😂

Gotta trust that paint and staff will get things figured out vs the zone.

Not sure why TKR passed it off to Heide when he had a 10 footer that he usually shoots tho.

It IS one game and we ar what, 9-2 in 11 games? And the two we lost, we had double digit leads. Not like we were overpowered or out skilled. Braden went missing for a HUGE chunk of the second half on offense this game and we can’t have that. He needs to go seek out his shot or we need offense created for him.

Paint talked about how the 9-0 run by Michigan to end the half was a killer, and it was when TKR was on the bench.

We also had four open 3s at the end of first half by smith, cox, Loyer and Heide. Missed em all but he said you want all those guys to take those open shots and we just missed em.

I’d give Waddell a shot. Can’t be any worse than what our bench gave us tonight.

I would expect any high school player to know the different things you can do against a pure zone, but knowing it and being successful are two different things. There was a time not long ago teams might try zone for a possession or two, but Purdue would destroy it. The zone makes it a bit more difficult for Braden and Trey and the short roll and Tre doesn’t give it up very often once he has the ball in the lane.

That’s my point. Dared us to make them and missed them all.

Was there any mention of an injury to Harris in the post game presser? Seemed like his leg got hurt on a couple of plays. Hope it’s nothing serious.

We all know to get playing time with Painter, the player has to be able to play defense! If Wadell and Berg are not playing, that speaks to their lack of ability to play defense.

This begs the question. I know fans love players who can shoot the three. And you guys love football teams that are pass happy rather than defensive oriented. Is it possible for Purdue to just jack up threes all day and not worry about defense?

This begs a second question. When I see recruits mentioned, all I ever read about is their 3 point shot capability. Even with Berg and Jacobson, I read about their 3 point shooting ability. And all I ever read about Colvin and Heide was their 3 point ability.

This makes me ask 2 more questions. Is the 3 point line different in college than it is in high school? Were these players making their shots in high school because their defenders were shorter? Would Purdue be better off if we had a 6’8 forward play the 3 rather than another guard? Those players do exist. Maybe somebody like Sisley at the 3 instead of a guard? Novel concept?

My other question is that I keep reading about Painter recruiting all of these Gatorade 3 point champions. Yet we all know he prefers to play players who can play defense. So why does he keep recruiting shooters who can’t play defense? Why doesn’t he recruit more players known for their defense rather than their shooting ability? Esstern and Kramer and Cardinal were known for their defense. I’m just not seeing it lately. Is Loyer, Harris, Myles or Heide or Burgess or Berg or Wadell known for their defense? Were Carson or Ivey known for their defense?

Yes, our big men have a good reputation for their defense. But our backcourt seems a little suspect as to their desire to play aggressive, physical defense. When was the last time a Purdue guard fouled out? And did we win that game?

I’m not really asking for answers. I’m just wondering if you are seeing the same things I see.

Teams with a good defense can win games when the shots are not falling. And against teams that are big and strong and physical, it helps if your 3 is a 6’8 forward instead of a third guard. When was the last time Purdue had a 6’8 forward playing the three? Was it Robbie? Vince Edwards? Or were they the power forward?

Just an observation and a thought.
