Purdue at Michigan: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Line on my site moved to Michigan -2.5, then came back down to 1.5 this morning.

How about the slate of college basketball games at 7pm ET tonight? 3 ranked matchups along with 2 more top 10 teams playing at bubble teams. All at the same time.

I'm glad I reinstated my Peacock for $1.95 per month. Jan/Feb Purdue schedule was worth it. One thing I like about Peacock is that you can cancel and start back up any time. After I canceled it, they sent me a whole bunch of cheap deals the next month to start back up. $1.95 is pocket change. Go Boilers!

Yeah but God forbid you want to rewatch something. A half hour of commercials you can't skip....F that app. Glad you got it cheap.

Need to come out and maintain our composure early because they are wanting revenge after the beating at Mackey. First 5-10 minutes will set the pace for the whole game.

Need to take our chances to turn them over and protect the ball.

Lastly, we have to be ready for a counter when they run the PNR through Wolf. We did a good job shutting it down last game but they will be throwing different wrinkles to open that up.

Going to be close but winning this keeps us in the drivers seat for a 3 peat.

Agree that defending Wolf will be the key. He went through a poor stretch around the time of the previous game but has been much better since then.

Road Trip!

Grab Brother Boon and Brother Otter, a twelve pack, and everyone pile into Flounder’s borrowed Lincoln 🤣😎🤣
No road trip for me. The last time I was in the Whore's Den was 2022 and Purdue was 21-3 and riding a 6 game winning streak. It didnt' go well that night. Of course, that was our 4th game in 9 days because Michigan played games with COVID cancellations causing us to have to fit a game into the schedule when it never should have been.

Funny story that night. We had 2nd row tickets on the corner just down from Purdue's bench. Painter was visibly frustrated all game. Late in the game, when both teams had already given up and pulled starters, they called a borderline foul on Michigan and Paint yells out (in a very quiet arena), "Oh, now you fvcking call it! Where the hell has that been all night?". Classic.

Could a less honest person go out to Yahoo and create a series of emails (BoilerFan1, BoilerFan2, etc.) and then use those different accounts to get access for an extended period of time?

Though, at $2/mo, that is not too unreasonable and far cheaper than going to the game in person.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight, the #7-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (19-5; 11-2) visit the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor to take on the #20-ranked Michigan Wolverines (18-5; 10-2) in a battle for first place in the conference standings. Tip is schedule for approximately 7:00 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on Peacock. This is the second of the two regular season match-ups between the teams. Purdue won the first game 91-64 last month at home.

Projected Starting Line-ups:

Purdue - Trey Kaufman-Renn, Caleb Furst, CJ Cox, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith

Michigan - Vladislav Goldin, Danny Wolf, Tre Donaldson, Nimari Burnett, and Rubin Jones

_________________________________

Purdue will have its hands full tonight. Michigan has won four straight after the Purdue dismantling a couple of weeks ago and are coming off a hard fought good win at Indiana last Saturday. Vladislav Goldin leads the Wolverines as he puts up 15.7 points and six rebounds a night this season. Roddy Gayle Jr. (10.7 points, 3.4 rebounds) and Danny Wolf (12.7 points, 10 rebounds) are solid secondary scoring options. Nimari Burnett (10.1 points), Tre Donaldson (13 points, 4.3 assists), Will Tschetter, L.J. Cason, Sam Walters and Rubin Jones need to be productive on either end of the floor for Michigan to have its best chance. Michigan shoots 49.2% from the field as a team this season, putting them 13th in Division I. The Wolverines drain an average of 9.3 three-pointers a night while shooting 36.3% from beyond the arc on the year. Michigan is above average at the free throw line this season, hitting 73.1% of their attempts at the line, putting them 140th in the country. Rubin Jones got the start against Indiana and could very well be in the staring line-up again for this game to primarily cover Braden Smith. Michigan does give up some offensive punch with Jones, but it also gives them an additional aggressive defender to go at Smith. Roddy Gayle Jr. would be the expected 6th man, first off the bench.

Michigan is rated 20th overall in KenPom, 24th in offensive efficieny and 22nd in defensive efficiency. The Wolverines play at a quick pace, rated 55th in adjusted tempo. Purdue is rated 7th overall in KenPom, 8th offensively and 32nd defensively. Adjusted tempo rating for the Boilers is 269th.

In the last match-up, Purdue jumped all over Michigan defensively, forcing several turnovers early and capitalizing before the Wolverines really knew what hit them - just one of those games, but expect this one to play out differently, and Michigan will try to exploit the match-up with its size advantage. Also, Burnett and Gayle had some good moments - they could still be problems for the Boilers. It's the same scouting report for the last game, but expect Michigan will play much better. The Goldin/Wolf two-man game will still be a focus for the Purdue defense, and the Boilers' success with defensing that will go a long way in determining the game's outcome. Michigan does not go extremely deep with its bench, so that might be an area where Purdue can try to exploit. They also don't quite have as big and physical of guard play that sometimes plays havoc with Braden Smith and the rest of the Purdue backcourt, but Rubin Jones in the starting line-up could boost that for Michigan early on. Gicarri Harris and CJ Cox settling in a little more would be a big boost for Purdue. They have generally had bigger impacts at home (especially Cox), but this is where they could prove to be difference makers if they can provide some additional production. Purdue will absolutely need to be better from long-range.....other than the game at Iowa, they have been shooting below 30%.....that will put them in a big bind if that continues.

Purdue has had a renaissance of sorts with forcing turnovers - more of that tonight would be an added bonus, although one would be hard pressed to expect the same results as the first game with Michigan.....even though the Wolverines have a penchant for giving them up.

Matt Painter was asked about the challenges of having a dominating win and then having a return game on the road, especially now since teams only play three other teams twice in the expanded conference.

"Obviously we're both up there in the standings trying to win a Big Ten championship so you just have to kind of focus on some of the things that got you in that position and understand how we forced a lot of turnovers in the game. So, if you play in this game and don't force turnovers, how does the game look? Rebounding is going to be more important. Shot making is going to be more important. We made shots in the game, so a lot of things went our way.....you just get back to the scouting report of the efficiency of things. When you take care of the basketball and you take good shots......you're going to really really help yourself defensively. And, if you can force turnovers and get in transition, now you're really helping the efficiency of your offense......understanding how you can have success but also understanding how they can flip it.

It's going to be very tough to beat them at their place, but that's the challenge, and whether you're a freshman or a senior, you have to realize that, and we've talked about that a lot...."

As to the Michigan team in general - "He [Coach Dusty May] has good balance - he has Tschetter and Burnett from this team last year, he has Goldin that he coached last year....and Danny Wolf is such a unique player; you just don't that kind of size and that skill together. Roddy Gayle has been in our league....he knows the league. Trey Donaldson's been at one of the best teams in the country here with Auburn......balance across the board, and it's not just a bunch of four-year or 5th year guys.....you get your impact but you still have room for development and growth."

Purdue is 5-1 on the road in conference. Keep in mind though, all of those wins are against teams well down the standings (Oregon, Rutgers, Iowa, Washington, and Minnesota). This would be Purdue's most impressive conference win of the season and go a long way toward getting them closer to another conference title. It is a tall ask and the kind of challenge that separates teams. They will need their best and a supreme effort tonight to prevail. Are the Boilers up to the challenge?

We shall see, starting in about an hour or so.....

Boiler up, my friends.

I've had Peacock for over a year now, might cancel after basketball season but I like it.

I'll be happy with a one point win, but would just love it if we win by 30 again.

Getting amped!
