There isn't much difference if Cox dribbles the ball up the floor or Smith. The difference is in attacking the defense instead of playing hand-off with it 30 feet from the basket until 10 seconds are left on the clock and then dumping it to TKR who is then double teamed with no time or space to do anything. Sound Familiar?? We need to pick up the pace and attack the basket. It is just too easy to smother Smith and throw our offense into turmoil.

my point B is other players on the perimeter that tighten up and pass it to the other team or try to force it to Braden when he is not open. Those players may have an open shot or a drive in front of them that they should pursue perhaps? I question if rigidity sets in and players just look for Braden to control everything and that is quite a load. I honestly don't know where the reins are pulled tight and/or why. I just know that those other guys other than Fletcher at times tighten up like Brandon Neuman did when pressure happened...and yet I have seen Myles and Cam recently attack successively the lane. AGain, what needs to happen to attack pressure? What are the things you can do...those are available to all the perimeter players. That doesn't mean it has to end with a shot, but backing off the pressure forces all to move and release the pressure...and without the self inflicted turnovers Purdue is in this
again how do you attack pressure? Backscreens, back cuts and dribble penetration is possible for all the perimeter players. That doesn't mean that you have to shoot the ball, just that you have now attacked the pressure and put the other team on the defense...Less horizontal play and more vertical
But this seems to be what's taught. No way this wouldn't be a continuous problem without being taught and Smith is the focal point of the offense because CMP/staff has trained the parts to do so.
We had multiple opportunities to speed the game up and it never happened. We never countered anything that IU played. Instead we played right into their hands.
Vertical would be to speed the tempo up. We haven't been doing that and in fact slowed the tempo down when we go small just to get into a set.
Yep, attacking doesn't necessarily mean you're the one taking a shot. Get their defense into rotations, draws fouls, opens up free looks for others. Many positives to it.
Is it what is taught or is it the result of restrictions? I don't know. I just know it might work in the tourney, but the big three have a large amount of scouting on them over the years as well as Matt and as of now Purdue went from in control to out of control in minutes...and again it is not a secret in what can be done to counter pressure...backscreens, back cuts and dribbling. Proper screening can also accomplish that but that timing and positioning better be good and if a player gets physical and disrupts that timing it too fails. Bottom line you have to get something going to the bucket more than Purdue does when they struggle
All of these would be correct, but what guards are attacking the lane to create this. We just don't seem to have it as a team. Aggressive guards win games and we don't seem to have that right now.
No, we aren't doing it now. That's the point, we need to do that. Loyer, Smith, Cox even Heide has shown he can. They just need to do it more often and with a purpose. Give teams something else to have to guard. Do it and it will also free up TKR from so many double teams.
vertical can be, but it was not in my description. Sure, if you rebound or get steals you can push the ball. Purdue doesn't get a lot of rebounds and teams are spreading out a bit making it harder to dig or scrape the ball to get steals. Purdue needs to push it every time they can. However, it was in the half court that Purdue problems rise and vertical in that scenario is more attacking the lane with ball, body and passing as a result of backscreens, back cuts, and dribbling mainly. Horizontal in that regard doesn't change the pressure, but forces you to accept it...until a turnover. Let me try this similar to a jab step in basketball out of a triple threat. If you step horizontally, you gain no advantage on the defender...he just shifts horizontally as well. If you step at a 45 degree angle you back him up and move him to the side and gain an advantage for a rocker step, step back, dribble and shot, but you accomplish nothing if just a horizontal movement...
Bottom line is our guards struggled against mediocre guards today. You just can't tell me Leal and Galloway are better than ours. At least Fletch scored.

Man, I wish I felt the same. I just don't see these guys playing attack the rim basketball. I see guys looking for pull-ups and 3's.
no doubt he is under a LOT of pressure. Giccari, CJ, Myles and Cam can all add penetration to their game to move the D. All are capable especially with certain defenders on them. Making the other team worry about others loosens the D
even pullups if the rim is closed allows a means of attacking pressure. I would much rather miss a pull up and maybe rebound and play some D that passing horizontal all the time and having it get stolen and go for an easy basket at the other end. I would just rather the players get tied up than throw it away for an easy two
I agree 100%. I really want Myles and Cam to become more downhill players. Attack the lane when the opportunity is there.
Yes, but attack the rim first and the pull-up once closed off. I want attack the rim basketball.
I feel like we are constantly getting less Ft's because there's no attacking the rim. When was the last time we had an advantage at the ft line? Or how many games we had the advantage?
I would agree. I will add when they were recruited, that all their highlight films were filled with shooting the 3. We have a bunch of Gatorade 3 point champions. That’s nice but also part of the problem. We don’t have any floor burners. We don’t have and window cleaners. We don’t have any Kramers. Edey covered up a lot of our deficiencies last year. He could reach over people and catch Braden’s passes. Tkr doesn’t have that ability. We need our role players to play other positions than guard. We have two many guards and unfortunately our next 2 incoming recruits are also guards. We badly need some forwards who can score or at least one. Tkr is not a center.

I was watching and I saw Cox initiate the offense maybe twice and one of those was when Braden was on the bench. We need do get the ball out of Braden’s hands more as he is being targeted. Let him run through some screens and get open 3’s or a drive to the hoop off of curls.
Not better but at six five and six six and their small guy at Six three, make it hard for Smith at five eleven to get good looks. Time and time again he made a move started to get free and their size made em up the difference. He would hitch, pass up the shot and the play would get out of sync.

Don't forget -- as good as Smith is, he needs someone to throw the ball to. It might not be his fault.
On replays, look for his teammates and try to determine whether they are either (1) where they were supposed to be or (2) where Smith had the right to expect them to be because of the randomness in player positioning during a particular possession.
I wish Braden would kick the ball out to shooters more other than just getting it to TKR in the lane. We have good shooters, let’s take advantage
smith is still hanging out at the top of the key and not moving the ball or making a move for the basket anymore. offense is too stagnant and the defense is mostly mia especially in the 2nd half of the last four games. all a team has to do is take it to the basket and we let them. if the defense continues this trend then the season is over

There wasn't a reason for Berg to step on the floor. Walked out there for maybe 2 minutes and had 2 fouls.
So you think your coaching background provided better understanding than the Purdue coaches in that there was "no" reason? You deflected to part of the results, but had nothing to do with the reasoning...unless you really believe there was no reason.
I believe there was zero reason. He's a seat warmer. Belongs at Purdue Fort Wayne instead. If you want to give TKR a breather then put in someone with any amount of future at Purdue like Burgess.
