Purdue will return to the practice field later today after a two-day break to start game prep for Eastern Kentucky. Darrell Hazell said the coaches had personnel meetings on Monday to determine the two-deep. We'll see what that looks like when we attend practice.
But how about a best guess before that? (And, also, I need a break from trying to write a Jordan Roos feature for the magazine.)
QB: Blough, Sindelar
RB: Jones, Worship
WR: Yancey, Burgess
WR: Posey, Phillips
WR: Young, Marshall
TE: Herdman, Hopkins
RT: McCann, J. Neal
RG: Roos, Yacoobi
C: Barron, Mendez
LG: King, Truitt
LT: Patterson, Cermin
Notes: Yacoobi and Truitt are on there, but I don't anticipate either playing. If something happened to King or Roos, Purdue would slide Mendez to guard. Cermin could move into the No. 1 spot at right tackle at some point, but Hazell seems to really want him as a swing player who can back up multiple spots.
DE: Panfil, Henley (presuming health)
DT: Replogle, Newton
NT: Wilson, Jones
DE: Larkin, Robinson
MLB: Bentley, Herman
WLB: Ezechukwu, Bailey
CB: Hunte, Cason
CB: Norwood, Hardy
N: Roberts, Smiley
S: Clark, Parker
S: Gregory, Mosley
Notes: Bailey would be with the 1s in a 4-3 look. It's a pretty clear top four there at LB. Wouldn't be surprised if Bailey moves past Ezechukwu at some point this season and starts. I like him better in coverage than Ezechukwu, and in Els' defense, that LB always gets the TE. Smiley was the No. 1 dime back late in camp, though walk-on Antonio Blackmon was with the 1s earlier in camp so they'd probably be the two-deep there. Will be interested if Henley/Faison still are recovering from their concussions if Wyatt Cook continues at that backup spot to Panfil — and especially if they are healthy where Cook fits. He only converted from linebacker in the summer, but he's shown up often since Henley went down against the second-team offense in terms of getting into the backfield. That could be indicative of the second-team tackles, but it's been a surprise, nonetheless.
Later tonight, we'll have the report from practice, so we'll see how close my guesses line up with Purdue's reality.
