Possibility of Swanigan staying another year?

bottom line; why do you go to college ? to join a frat and have a great social life and play at the Co-rec ? to expand your philosophical knowledge of the world ? or to get a job ?

Biggie essentially has a job offer from the NBA. that's what he went to college to get. with a job offer in hand, you no longer have to go to class. and isn't that what most seniors do their last semester after they receive their offers? They concentrate on their job offer more than college? That's supposedly what college is all about.

if the NBA job fails, he can always come back, finish his degree and coach. My son has a close friend who is a student and a Olympic track athlete. to him the Olympics training comes first, and after the Olympics is over, he'll come back to school, complete his degree and become a coach. the NBA is waiting for Biggie. his college interviews are over. he got the job before graduating.. be happy for him

Does anyone think Swanigan can inprove his ceiling athleticly?

That's really the only thing that would improve his draft stock.

Let's say this is purely a financial decision; Biggie is drafted somewhere late first. Say spurs at 29. He might make a bit over 1 mil.

By staying, he'd need to improve his stock enough to cover the roughly 1mil lost .

I think he's gone... but for selfish reasons I hope he believes next year he can be a lottery pick.

I think that's the only way he stays.

Let's put it another way and in the form of a question: If your son had the same talent level, and had the same career as Swanigan has had at Purdue, would you honestly advise him to come back and risk injury, or would you tell him to go make a huge living playing a game with guaranteed money?

FYI - College athletes can get insurance plans for injuries they happen to sustain based on their "value". Drew Brees had one for his entire senior year.

I've made my peace with this being Swanigan's last season. Count me among those who think he doesn't have much to gain (in terms of draft stock) by staying another season, and he runs the risk of injury or having a year that's not as good.

That said, I am really curious to see how this team will do next year without Biggie. The junior class of V. Edwards, Haas, Mathias, and PJ Thompson is the most solid class that Painter has developed since the Baby Boilers and, IMO, have a chance to be really special next year. They remind me of the six-man 1996 senior class --- no real All-Americans, just a quartet of solid guys who together make the nucleus of a very solid team.

I think they'll have the chance to have similar success in their own right next year.

Here are my thoughts which I shared before in a previous thread but I will repeat it again for the sake of discussion.

Ive said it a hundred times but Draymond was chubby and slow when he started at MSU, I think the comparison to Swanigan makes some sense. It wasn't clear what position Draymond would play in the NBA, concerns were primarily about his athleticism.

Strengths:
*Stat sheet stuffer
*Skilled passer
*Excellent rebounder
*Can score in the post
*Good ball handler
*Can shoot the 3
*Great understanding of the game

Weaknesses:
*Who does he defend?
*Doesn’t have great lateral quickness

Who I am talking about here? Caleb or Draymond?
Well, these statements were made regarding Draymond before he was drafted.....see link below

Purdue will have the best senior class in the B1G next year. The teamwork that goes with that cannot be replaced.

In the "Transformational" video produced by the athletic department, two or three players (VE and PJ) talk about how much fun it is to hang out with Biggie, and how the team has become his family, so he may not be as stoic behind the scenes.

There was an interview one of the TV stations did with Biggie right before the NW game after he had been selected as a second-team academic all-American, and most of the interview was about his academic success and how he juggled the various demands on his time. He said (almost matter of factly) that he would be eligible to graduate at the end of the semester next fall. Now, it's easy to read way too much into an off-the-cuff comment, but the tone of his voice almost made it seem as if in his mind there was no doubt he'd be back to finish his education.

Again, it's one comment that can easily be taken out of context, but remember that Biggie is also just 19 years old. Right now his Purdue family is a safe and comfortable place to be, and the NBA will always be there.

I don't think he's coming back, but if he does, it will be for all the right reasons.

I take that as he does value his education and works hard at it. I do think he will finish his degree, it just will not be next year.

Assuming VE returns....I'm no longer convinced that's a given.
Surprised no one else has brought this up. I too have a (slight) worry about Vince bolting. He considered it last year and if he continues to perform well and leads the team to a FF his leanings to the League will be that much stronger.

Completely agree. His stock conintues to rise and a FF run could push him toward the league. I'd be happy to cross that bridge when we get there!

Just win baby.

I'd be surprised if Vince (and Haas for that matter) doesn't declare and test the waters again this spring. That said, it seems unlikely that one solid NCAA tournament would vault him into a position where it would make sense for him to go. He needs to come back next year and do that for a whole season. That would catch the NBA's attention.

I think he's going it is pathetic though that some of the recent mock drafts don't have him as a first rounder. I think he would fit in the Spurs system perfectly so I'm hoping he gets picked late first round to a great organization and get his guaranteed contract.
Spurs, Celtics, Warriors, and a rebuilding Pacers would all be good fits for Biggie.

In all seriousness, if I were a high division 1 basketball coach...I would have every single guy on my roster declare for the draft (without agents of course) because those players get an evaluation. A tool that I could use as a coach to help those kids see what they need to improve on from an independent party could prove invaluable!

I know he's not having THAT kind of March, but Kemba Walker significantly increased his draft stock with insane conference/NCAA tournament performances. Buddy Hield did, too.

If you look at the overall body of work in the 3 tourney games this season (1 BTT and 2 NCAA), Biggie's overall game is vastly improved. His passing, especially in the ISU game, was outstanding.

It'll happen more often. Kentucky did it last year. I'm sure some more programs will follow their lead this year

Definitely a huge part of the offense will be gone next season. Vince would have a chance to be a big time star and really up his draft stock. It would take a monster season for him as a senior to get into the first round though.

I remember this subject when Big Dog was here. Ends up coming back for a better year isn't a real consideration. He gone. No matter how much we want....dream up reasons....or whatever excuse. He.........gone.......
