So please take this with a grain of salt because its not 100% factual but I have two close relationships within the football program that updated me last night. Over the past couple days it seems clear Fleck will not be going to Oregon, they seem to be looking for a more proven P5 coach that has a track record in a power league. For one, they need a homerun hire and I don't blame them at all. With that being said, both sources let me know that PJ Fleck will be back at Western Michigan next season and an announcement as well as a extension will happen after the MAC championship game. In terms of how long that extension will be is unclear, both said probably 2-3 years at 1,750,000/yr all guaranteed. Obviously if that were to be the case I expect there is a buyout clause because I don't see him at WMU another 3 years, I get the feeling he is hoping ND opens up. With this being said I still think there is plenty of time and good candidates for Purdue to grab and I look forward to seeing someone rebuild the program !

If true, that's great news for Fleck and in my opinion....Boilerland. Now go bring Miles to West Laffy.

Actually they have been very up and coming, they won the MAC last season. How they will be going forward I have no clue as I really don't follow WMU baseball. The Football program and Hockey program are definitely the two main attractions on campus.

Anything is possible but just have a hard time believing he would take that offer and risk losing 15-20m from Purdue who is now committing significant resources to build a championship program. He knows our division is ripe for the picking too so it is kind of a no brainer. No disresepct to Western its a great school and town.

It's plausible he returns to WMU and waits for a better job market. He is still young and has undoubtedly seen what jumping into the wrong situation can do to one's career.

I think somebody like Brohm might be a better fit for us anyway.

Boiler you have a great point and I understand what your saying but if you saw inside the program at WMU right now you might understand a little more. Money wise of course he is risking a lot more guaranteed money at Purdue but if he has another good year at WMU next year that money will be there somewhere else. I think it comes down to two factors.
1) Yes they lose there top QB and WR who are certainly electric but they have one of the top 3 RB duos in the whole country that are both only sophomores as well as a very young defense that could be really special next season. The cupboard is also full with a lot of young talent as the recruiting has been going very well.
2) He loves the university, city and community of Kalamazoo and if I'm being honest he is oddly attached to it as he didn't go to school here.

The odd thing would be him staying if they go to the Cotton bowl and actually win it because there is no higher ceiling to reach at a MAC school as the college football playoff will always be out of reach.

Your absolutely correct that anything can happen I just wanted to share what I heard because I have always respected your fan base.

I believe we have someone signed, sealed and delivered right now. I don't know who it is but the logical explanation is that he is awaiting completion of his current team's CCG this weekend.

Remember one important thing....his ego will be fighting with his wife's desires to stay in HER community.

Thank you sir we respect Western too. People forget Purdue football actually has a solid football tradition so the right coach can win big at Purdue, especially with our West division. We are hearing Purdue has its man and we are just waiting for the championship games to conclude to announce our guy. It could be Brohm since his team is playing Saturday but....

Boiler, would you really want a guy like Brohm who's been a HC at a lesser school in a much weaker conference to lead Purdue? It's hard to believe he's the best PU can get if that's the case. Throw the entire kitchen at someone at a better program who's known by recruits.

The only ones of those that are worth trying that are currently at a P5 job and are not leaving to come to Purdue.

according to ESPN, Miles no longer a possibility at Purdue...probably winds up at Houston

I am sure that is pretty accurate of Miles no longer a possibility. From what I had heard, he seemed to be our first choice, but he never seemed to be willing to commit. We are probably not high enough profile wise for what he thinks he is worth, since he is a "Michigan" man. Let's get someone that actually wants to coach for us and is not just doing it for a paycheck.

It's probably just a case of him being 63 and wanting to go somewhere he can win immediately. Looks like Houston is a real possibility.

I don't buy it. That is just your hope. I doubt that he would turn down a chance to coach in the Big Ten. Oh, and money talks. Purdue can pay him a lot more than 1.75 million per year.

Thanks. Where did McConnell play?
Harrison High School. New HC Pat Lowry (former HC at Delphi) has really turned the program around and has had a huge run of success of late (regional championship and a sectional final in back to back years after being really bad for awhile). Pat has some young talent again and may be primed for a good run in another year or two.

Spot on. We are the Cradle of Quarterbacks and the Den of Defensive Ends. We are also the home of the greatest DB to ever play the game of football.

Me neither.....I agree w/Walt34...I still think Fleck is the guy we have signed/sealed. His agent would never let him turn down guaranteed millions-after all agents are hired to get client as much $$$ as possible. Thats how they make $$. Besides, what if WMU loses friday?

Yeah, 1.75 will soon be bottom of the barrel for a P5 job.
Hell, I can only think of one job in the P5 that makes below that...and that is Kansas...arguably one of the few places worse off than Purdue at the moment.

Actually looking at data now, only two coaches made less than $1.75 million this year in the P5:

David Beaty - Kansas
Tracey Claeys - Minnesota

Of note, it also had Brian Kelly under that threshold but clearly there are other things at work for his pay that raise him above that since ND doesn't have to report their salaries due to being a private school.

Of that $1.75 million threshold, there are already 3 coaches that made more than that in 2016 in the G5:
Tom Herman - Houston
Mike Norvell - Memphis
Ken Niumatalolo - Navy

There are also 10 other G5 coaches making more than $1 million per year:
Scottie Montgomery - ECU
Matt Rhule - Temple
Mark Hudspeth - ULL
Bryan Harsin - Boise State
Mike Bobo - Colorado State
Tim DeRuyter - Fresno State
Bob Diaco - UCONN
Scott Frost - UCF
Willie Taggert - USF

What if Purdue is hiring a DC from Ohio bobcats as new head coach? That is what my sources say..
Hiring a MAC assistant coach? I assume you're already drinking today.

I think it's conceivable he stays at WMU. I agree with other posters...I think we have a coach and we announce after his game this weekend. Brohm or Fleck....

Could also mean Purdue is waiting on another HC that is playing Saturday (my sources). I think MBob saw the success and tradition and actually followed suit for once of what foundation has been laid here with QB's. Read in to that what you want and who's name has been floated around.

Yes I am trying to get ready to be disappointed. It turns out MD 20/20 and Night Train work better now than they did 20 years ago. "I love that stuff"

1A) Brohm 1B) Calhoun.

What if ND is really flecks ultimate goal

If ND becomes open next year (likelier than any other recent year) -
wait that year at wmu, or go to pu and then bolt?

This doesn't relate to 17-18 year old kids coming into play college ball. Its what have you done for me lately, where do I get to live and how awesome is the locker room...

All I can say if Fleck turns down a P5 job this season he is taking a huge risk. He could come back to WMU next season and have a great year at 9-3 and he won't be close to the same commodity he is right now. Undoubtedly there will be some other mid-major coach somewhere going undefeated next season and that guy will be at the top of everyone's wish list. He's that guy this year.

In a way I would find it admirable to double down on himself but it's a risk few would be willing to take and has a high probability of backfiring.

The rhetoric may not but Drew Brees, Ryan Kerrigan, and Kawann Short are more than enough proof that Purdue can get you to the NFL and set you up to make big money there. That is what the high-end guys are most concerned with, probably above winning in most cases. Just have to have a coach that can sell it and then deliver.

Hmm waiting for another not brohm or fleck,

Grobe doubtful
Rhule temple ranks 69 in passing
Calhoun option, 124 in passing

I think if WMU can legitimately continue a compensation model where he can eventually get up to $2-$2.5 million per year...he might be interested in staying. There is more to life than money and if he and his family have fallen in love with Kalamazoo and the campus, he may shun away from the bright lights at this point. His stock may never be as high BUT if he can get a compensation model that is a total guaranteed contract for 5-6 years at close to $2 million...he should take it and possibly hedge his bets on continuing his success. If he think he can, he could be in line for a HUGE contract from a top flight job in 3 to 5 years.

I hear a lot of people say that but you are wrong. There are many young kids who buy into history and tradition. How do you think Notre Dame keeps getting good recruits? It's not because of the location. It's not because of what they've done lately. Yes, they do have a good locker room but I bet all of those national titles and Heismans from long ago matter to the recruits a bit more.
