Everyone here knew we’d have a great team since the day Hammons said he was coming back, and a high national ranking was inevitable once Swanigan arrived. The mindless preseason polls were proven to be a fiasco by the end of November.

Yet, our game with nationally ranked Butler still falls to BTN while the major national networks carry crap. Our game with formerly ranked Vanderbilt falls to BTN while Ohio State vs. Mercer shows on ESPNU. Mercer? AYFKM?

So, why is a tradition-rich school with nearly a half-million living alumni consistently screwed in network coverage? Largely because we as fans don’t make ourselves seen and heard nearly enough.

We can bitch or rationalize in our own forums all we want, but to actually try and get something done, make your feelings known by going straight to the sources…

Hit them loud, proud and often. If enough Boilers vent steam, they’ll notice.

Or if you're like me and prefer Big Ten Network to the other crap, then just smile and say thanks under your breath.

I realize OP's point is about publicity, but ESPN seems to be trying to run faster than their feet allow. Their website is now difficult to navigate, clustered with ads and stories more closely resembling TMZ. I deleted their app the day they sent a push notification that Lamar Odom & Whichever Kardashian were going to stay together (The Score is a MUCH better one, get it if you don't have it). Blowhards like Berman, Bayless, Vitale and Stephen A. Smith are everything I hate about sports talk. I'd rather watch Shark vs. Dyson than listen to these side-shows. I digress.

And t
You do realize ESPN has the broadcast rights to virtually every bowl game? Why? Because the ratings for FB >>>> BB.
they overpaid by hundreds of millions. Then they let cable companies offer cable subscriptions to customers without ESPN at a rate of $6 a household. They are in deep trouble and instead of bringing someone in to right the ship, they are trying to fix their mistakes. The same people that made very poor choses to begin with. Sinking ship if they don't get it fixed

Are you talking about ESPN or Purdue football? :)

You can't tell me more people are going to watch the sucky Ohio vs Appalachian state game then what would watch Butler vs Purdue?

You'd think ESPN would want their BPI #1 rated team on their network, but they would rather have a much talented IU team on instead!

That bowl game has been scheduled for that time slot on ESPN since May. They couldn't change it if they wanted to.

This is not some slight. TV coverage was determined months ago.

But per the article either could have still picked it up

Article says that each (CBS and ESPN) are allotted a 'certain number' of Saturday/Sunday games they can use an option on, quite reasonable that neither would want to use a valuable option this early in the year to pick up a game that starts at 5 in the afternoon.

When are these game start times determined, and who does the determining? Dinner time is not a good time to start a game, especially here in Indiana.

So you expected ESPN to cancel the bowl game? CBS thinks two national brand colleges will get better ratings than two Indiana colleges. Seriously. Get over it.

The whining on this board about being on BTN reeks of a little brother complex.

Lol it's not a problem with me I could care less. I was just stating a simple fact right in the article that many of you are ignoring for whatever reason.

I have no need to get over anything captain.... Get over yourself

So we are all clear, TV networks care about one thing: ratings. And when it comes to ratings, College Bowl Games > Ohio State > Notre Dame > Indiana > Kentucky > Purdue > Butler. Whether we like it or not, more fans equals more ratings and all of those schools have way more fans than Purdue or Butler. No one cares that we're both ranked. They want eyeballs. And the casual sports fan in December will pick a college bowl game every time over a game between two schools from a state they can't even remember.

Most of us aren't ignoring it. We just get it.

Doesnt the BTN get first option of refusal for x% of games? I think thats the way it works so BTN picked up our game because they van jack up the ad $s, compared to the snorefest of IU/ND. That is more money coming into the BTN and back to BigTen schools compared to Disneys bank account. Well get all tthe coverage we want or need starting in Jan! #BTFU and beat some Bulldog A$$!

I don't understand the outrage here. If you're able to watch Purdue, then why do you care who televises it? I don't think it matters to recruits all that much.

I would much rather have the game on BTN than ESPN3 or ESPNU. Am I in the minority here?

This doesn't bother me, however having to pay for big ten plus.... Now that's annoying.

If that's whiny, then I confess I'm guilty

This isn’t about those of you who thump your chests over being able to live-stream a third-rate telecast. And this isn’t about those of us who actually attend games and have no need for any telecast. It’s about Purdue and perpetuating success by getting the highest profile possible for our highest-profile teams, like the one we have now.

What worthwhile recruit or poll voter is going to plunge through the depths of obscurity to find an isolated game telecast when the big stage is right in their face? The major networks dominate the big screens at restaurants, bars and other public spots nationwide. Outside of its Midwest nests, BTN doesn’t fill that bill. And ESPN3 has all the future of the Palm Pilot.

Purdue, along with that craphole down south, used to benefit from having virtually every game saturate its own state with telecasts on the Farm Bureau Network. Few other schools had that degree of exposure, so more of the state’s top recruits stayed home. Now BTN allows everyone to share the local limelight (and the wealth), so programs must maximize their national exposure while they’re up to avoid valleys after peaks, like what we’ve endured in the past decade-plus -- at the same school that set the Big Ten record for consecutive upper-division finishes (1967-1988) while padding its record for league championships.

Sadly, some fans here merely shrug and point to weak notions of ratings, as if those are forever set in stone as sent from upon high. Change does happen. And consumer feedback also draws notice when its numbers mount and reach the right places. So, instead of sitting on your self-centered can dumping excuses while staring at your palm, do something for your school. Crap on the media.

Considering Purdue is ranked in the top 10, I would bet lots of analysts, recruits, and fans will "plunge through the depths of obscurity" (dramatic, much? BTN is not at all an obscure network) to watch this game of two top 25 ranked teams on a neutral court.

I'm sure a lot of Purdue fans, like myself, have watched other games of top 25 teams on everything from espn3 to BTN to Fox sports 1. If your team is good, people will make an effort to watch. I can't tell you how many times I've switched from ESPN because it was a blowout or I wasn't intrigued by the teams that were playing. "If you build it they will come" regardless of what network it is airing on.

If BTN "is not at all an obscure network," then why is the Big Ten's current leading rebounder and two-time freshman of the week not even listed among the nation's current top 20 freshmen, as announced today by Rivals? Someone's not coming to what's been built.

In the last 10 years, I've lived in TX, PA, and NH. And yet I've always got BTN. And I've missed maybe 5% of the games.

Well, good for you! And it's a good thing you're able to get rides from state to state, because you keep missing the boat on this thread.

BTN has not been and never will be a higher profile network than CBS or ESPN, and for Purdue to sustain success these days, the major national networks are where we need to be.

Florida, @Pitt, OSU, Maryland, MSU, @UM, @IU, @Maryland are all games Purdue will be on ESPN or ESPN2 (doesn't include the games we are on ESPNU). So your argument doesn't really hold water.

I think it's amusing that you believe every game Purdue plays should be on ESPN, it really does make you sound like a 2 year old.

So, can you explain why our terrible football team was seen on ESPNU and ESPN2 so many times this year instead of BTN?

This thread needs to die. Any good holiday cocktail recipes?

Carrot cake martini. I do it by feel, so my best approximation is 70% Baileys, 25% butterscotch schnapps, 5% cinnamon schnapps (can substitute fireball in a pinch). Sounds weird, but it is an amazing crowd pleaser. Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass.
