Bill LeMonnier spoke to a couple of football officials associations in Indy tonight. College football is changing their mechanics by to moving the 8th official, the Center Judge-who is typically in the offensive backfield with the referee-to the defensive side of the ball on trys (PATs) and field goals. This is in response to an increase of illegal activity by the defense in line play where they would pull an offensive guard or tackle out of the way so someone could shoot the gap.
That will put three officials at linebacker depth on that side, and offensive coaches, according to early reports from scrimmages, are already scheming to use them as rubs/picks on fake field goals (and PATs).
In short, you will likely see more fakes this year.
BIll LeMonnier, for those who may not know, was a long time Big Ten official, and still does the training for them along with his duties as a rules analyst for ESPN. He was the white hat for the Auburn/Oregon national championship game a few years ago.
