Ok Lobos, you are up next. What would you like to do? Do you want to double AJ? Do you want to put all 5 in the paint and make us shoot 3s? Do you want to run and gun? Your call ... pick your poison.

In this game, I think the bigger test is for our defense.

New Mexico has a rather balanced scoring attack - with two 6'4" guards and a 6'8" forward (a lankier power forward - does not shoot 3s).

These 3 players all average 17 points per game.

The two guards, Neal and Brown, are streaky shooters. They don't have great overall percentages, but both have "gone off" offensively this season. Neal is a 38% 3 point shooter, which is solid, and only about 1/3 of shots are 3s. However, his overall shooting percentage is a tick lower than his 3 point shooting.

Statistically, our defense has been great this season. However, it's also weighted heavily on some bad teams. And we haven't faced a team with balanced scoring like this.

Obviously Davis' situation will heavily impact this game. I certainly do not want him rushed back because I don't want to see a lingering injury situation for him. However, if he doesn't play, it's going to be a serious test for our overall team defense (and still a test if Davis plays). We match-up well with the three in terms of size. But we've seen some lapses in defense (thankfully not taken advantage of much by our opponents).

Um... Wouldn't their scoring averages also be heavily weighted on bad teams?

Florida had 8 guys averaging 7.5 points a game or better going into our game with them.
Wouldn't that be more balanced then 3 guys averaging 17?

I'm pretty sure it would be.

Everyone's statistics are weighted heavily on playing bad teams. Only two of Purdue's opponents had really poor offensive efficiency (NCA&T and Incarnate Word). The remaining were all very respectable and dragged down in part because they had to play us.

Of course their schedule isn't top 25. And there's a big difference between scoring 8 ppg and 17 ppg. The point is they have 3 guys who do 64% of their scoring and play 30 mpg each. Florida doesn't have 1 player who averages 30 mpg (and only 1 over 23 mpg). And their top 3 scorers don't even reach 50%.

I don't know why it's controversial to point that out. I think we have shown weakness on perimeter penetration, something UNLV likes to do. And they have explosive players - both of their guards have reached 30 points this year. Like I said, they are streaky players. But if one of them is hot against us - it could be a real challenge.

I think NM is a pretty good team. They might be the team that most closely matches our length that we have played so far this year. IMO this is a key OOC game right up there with Pitt, Vandy, and Butler. Can't sleep on NM.

This is what makes me a bit worried. We're "sky high" right now after beating Pitt - and there's not much talk about New Mexico. They are certainly not world beaters, but they aren't a bad smaller conference team either. If they are overlooked, they easily can beat us. Hopefully we will be dialed in though!

We're undefeated and coming off a big road win. I would think Mackey on Saturday will take care of any potential let down. Place should be rockin'.

Just going off the top of my head, it sounds a little like some of the challenges BYU presented last year on the perimeter. Granted, Purdue is improved, but I can see where some vulnerability might be. A different test, but another step in the process perhaps. As some have pointed out, coming off a good win on the road, back at home, if the focus isn't there, could there be a letdown?

I don't see it as controversial.
I was just pointing out the same thing was said about Florida.
Although they had 8 guys who averaged 7.5 points or more. They has one who was just under 18 and another who was right at 15.

I see similar results as I think it is easier to take one guy out of his game them to shut down numerous guys.

And the upper classmen who have been through the bad times should keep the reality checks rolling.
