Painter to critics: "you don't understand basketball, it's really stupid" in press conference

If you read every post, you will see that some people are clearly offended. Their egos seem to make them think that Painter's comments were directed at them, personally. Of course, many of the people who are insulted by Painter's use of the word "ignorant" are the same people who publicly describe him as stupid, stubborn, clueless, over-sized ego, and a loser. Talk about egos.
Substance...that is the desired post from everyone...unless it is music or some OT thread or @BoilersRock just posting a pic. ;)

We all have egos, you seem to have an enlarged one. If you would have achieved what Matt has , yours would be out of control.
Yes, we do all have egos. Why do you think I have an enlarged one? Because I don't share your opinion about Painter?

I'm not the one telling people they're stupid and/or don't know anything about basketball. That's Painter. That's ego, no matter how much one has "achieved" in life.

Next time, hopefully you can offer a legitimate counterpoint. Be well.

I don't want agreement; I want respect for how incredibly difficult it is to get 8 young men to do what we all know they should do in a 1/2 second decision situation. Under conditions in which another group of well-coached young men are busting their asses to stop our young men from doing what they have been told to do.
I can only speak for myself, I don't think it's an easy job at all. If it were easy he wouldn't get paid millions a year to do it. I don't think being president of the university is an easy job, but that doesn't mean I don't criticize sometimes. I would wager that we all do that in our normal day to day lives. Maybe it's your boss or your pastor or the mayor of your town. We all are critical of people in leadership positions. It doesn't mean we don't think their jobs are hard.

If someone is that easily offended then that is on them, no argument there,
I said Painter was stuck in his ego, based on that particular quote, but by no means am I "offended" by what he said. He has the right to say what he said, and we all have a right to agree, disagree, and/or have an opinion about what he said.

Just because a person disagrees doesn't mean that person is offended.

Well said. That's why I said I wasn't aware anyone was offended. Maybe some were, but that's on them.

I agree with disagreeing is not the same as being offended. Offended is much stronger with feelings lasting much longer. Whoever Matt was speaking to or whatever entity it was that he was referencing when he said those comments were stupid ( I can't recall if he said they were stupid or the comments were stupid?) and they don't understand basketball, that group or person could be offended I suppose, but they really shouldn't be. When some are shocked and/or surprised and went on about it relative to this or that, it is reasonable to assume that person, group or entity reacted in a way that was much different than as a matter of fact. No matter what you and dryfly are solid posters as are many here. I know I don't intend to hurt anyone's feelings, but I very easily could have...on something. Just call me an a$$hole or whatever comes to mind...it is okay nothing said will be the first time. ;)

I wouldn't say complicated. I think he comes across whiny and condescending. We need to also understand that he isn't just referring to fans, because many others in the media were pointing out the similarities in the NW loss to previous losses. CMP is a very good coach, but I get it, he said a lot of things after the FDU loss that he probably didn't really want to say. "I have to look in the mirror" "I'm the common denominator" etc.... Now he gets the first loss of the year and people are jumping on the fact that the loss was very similar to others and he doesn't like to have to answer those questions. But saying people don't understand basketball or they are stupid, probably isn't the best tactic. If any other teams coach did that we would be critical of them, and I think we need to be critical here also. Not the end of the world, but he could have picked a better response.
Maybe these same people should look in the mirror… do they sound whiney, condescending, and childish when Purdue loses? Like a kid who was told no?

That’s a very hard yes.

The best person and most knowledgeable don't always get the job. Just because the job was handed to you by Keady doesn't make you the only one that "understand" the game. There are many regular folks that have a excellent understanding of the game. Painter is sometime too stubborn and too comfortable for the good of Purdue. Check your ego at the door please.

WIN A NC or EVEN GETTING TO A FINAL 4 WILL HELP, BUT UNTIL THEN YOU ARE OPEN TO CRITICSIMS.
Handed him the HC coaching job?

Check your ego at the door?

You’re right, I think you should apply for a HC position. You’d be excellent, obviously head and shoulders above Matt Painter.

I mean, what has he ever accomplished? Has he ever even been top 3 in the conference, let alone win it? He probably has a losing record. Most likely never been ranked in the top 25. The only time Painter wins is when the other team plays horrible and Purdue gets super lucky. Can he even recruit, doubtful he’s ever had a top 10 recruiting class. He probably needs 5* recruits just to win games. If you give him 3* recruits, he’d never win a single game in his life. He’s lucky he’s got Swanigan, without him he’ll suck. He’s lucky he’s got Hammons, without him he’d suck. He’s lucky he’s got Haas, without him he’d suck. He’s lucky he’s got Ivey, without him he’d suck. He’s lucky he’s got Edey, without him he’ll suck. He didn’t even earn the HC Purdue job. His family must be billionaires and paid Purdue off for the job. He’s too mean in press conferences, telling me I’m stupid since I think he’s a bad coach because Purdue can’t win 35 games and a FF every single year. He needs to check his ego at the door, who THE HELL does he think he is talking indirectly about me like that? I’ll go to Purdue forums and show him!!!

🙄🙄

Look...Painter's ball licker at it again. Don't forget the left one b!tch.
That was uncalled for, and makes you seem petty and course. No need for it. I can understand how you must have tied your ego to the absolute success of a college team, got your feelings hurt and are now lashing out. …but that was also unwise. Your post reflects more on you than it does on your intended target.

I've been critical of Painter at times, doesn't necessarily mean I want him fired (OK, maybe I did say he should be fired after the FDU game....) but, I'm also not of the belief that Painter is the best Purdue could ever do. Nor do I believe, and which is supported by data, that Painter is a strong tourney coach in March.
I think Painter is a solid X/O coach, wins a lot of games Nov-Feb, is becoming a better recruiter, but very stubborn and not flexible in his strategies or in-game adjustments.
It'll likely be a few years until we know whether someone out there can take Purdue further than Painter has.

Thats because he struggles to continually recruit athletic guards. Getting them every now and then is the best he has gotten. I firmly believe that the "struggle" is a reflection of his outdated offense.

This thread was about a PU press conference after PU had won against Iowa and comments CMP made. What are you talking about a PU loss for?

Well CMP supporter here, for the most part.

But have to say the fundamental issues for the FDU loss & NW loss were indeed BOTH TOs...
Caused by same players.....
Under duress from 1/2 court D pressure.
Guess I'm clueless....LOL.
What about our guards not being able to guard quicker backcourt players other than Jones?

Jones helps but is he enough?

What?

I’m not doing your work for you. Read the thread before posting uninformed statements. You won’t look so ignorant.

I don't even want to put on here the opinion on the guards he recruits and it is not just mine
Benter, Cox or Harris???????? All of them? Who's not up to your standards?
I'm being facetious as I'm guessing (sure) you're talking about guards currently on the team.
But hoping not as you'd have to be pretty damn blind to not see the uptick in recruiting that is happening now.

Maybe, but we scored over 80 points in NU game. It’s really simple. Painter is a very good coach. The problem is over the years we cant guard high ball screens against good guards. Yes TO in any game can be a problem, but we struggle guarding high ball screens.
