I know it’s a few days old but I just listened to Painters segment on Dakich show last night. He was good as always.
Dakich had asked him if kids are different nowadays and Matt said they were. They are a little thinner skinned but he talked more on something that I myself talk to people about. And that’s that while kids may work more in summer on individual skills with a trainer, they are not out playing pick up ball or 3 on 3 and so on. Commented on how you learn the game better like angles, getting off shots better and playing team ball, etc.
My thing I notice is you never drive by a park in summer anymore and see kids playing ball or pick up games in gyms. It’s usually us older dudes. You used to always have games going in parks or in your driveways. I do agree that it helps make better players

Not sure where you live but this is not true in my area. I always see kids out at the nearby parks playing basketball if the weather is at all decent

They have nowhere to put their phones LOL. Seriously, that's all we did when younger...….go searching for a park with some busy courts. And man did you learn to be thicker skinned! No blood, no foul. Good times.

I'm guessing the end result is fewer fans in years to come with actual playing experience and knowledge of the game.

And more cases of carpal tunnel syndrome...……….

The growth of suburbs killed pick up sports as well. I grew up across the street from the neighborhood park where I could see who was at the park and go play. Very strange to be home after school or in the summers and not see some pick up game going on.

This is not the case at all where I live. I work with teenagers and see countless pickup games outside and inside daily. Not sure I understand why the older generations like to point out mobile phone use among kids. The older generations put those phones in their hands.

And the medium they use to criticize are the aforementioned evil cell phones.

Well T-bone, I wasn’t criticizing cell phone use because you can still use cell phones and do other things. Kind of like walking and chewing gum. I was just simply pointing out that at least where I live and areas I travel through, I don’t see people out playing pick up or even shooting in their driveways. A lot of dry rotted nets and such. You used to always see people out. Even in winter. Or pickup games nights in armories or school gyms. Heck we played on a gravel driveway. We had a two double dribble per game rule on account of the gravel. A lot of skinned knees and such.
The point Painter was making is that the more games you play like that help with playing team ball and understanding angles and passing and getting shots off. He wasn’t bashing individual work with trainers or specialists

Spot on!

Lmao...
I remember we cut my neighbor's ping pong table in half, hoisted it onto the front of his garage, put a rim on it, strung lights on his back porch and garage to have a lighted court. We would play 3 on 3 or 4 on 4 until 10 or 11 at night when people would complain.
His parents were okay with it because we generally shovelled all the snow from the triple wide drive for winter play.

Yes barn ball was the best. Getting slammed into the walls was a normal thing. The only bad thing was when the ball went downstairs. We had an 8.5 foot goal up there and it was awesome.
My brother and I used to play in our barn hayloft. It took a while to feed enough hay to the cattle to open enough space to get a shot off. The hole where the ladder was created an additional pressure defender when taking the ball out of bounds. :D

My favorite memories of playing ball in hs was playing in my buddies hayloft. He had full court and the wall on the side was used as a extra player on o. We played 2 on 2 games to 100 by 1s. Our drinking water was out of a hose. But then beer drinking took over and we eventually just drank all night lol

I remember playing in barns and hay lofts. The latter was interesting because the trapdoor was under the backboard.
We used to go up to northeast Ohio To a farm one of My college friends still operates. Playing in the hayloft was the best! The floor was really smooth wood from all of the years of the hay bales being thrown up there and moved around. At the time it seems really big I can’t tell you to this day if it really was or if we are just always out of shape from drinking beer but it was so much fun we played till midnight

I live in SC so that means all the baseball fields are packed year round. Rarely see kids playing basketball. I live in a neighborhood with 400 homes and my house is only one of two that has a basketball goal. 2 in 400! I'm always out there shooting with the kids and it always feels like people slow down to watch us play like it is something they have never seen before.

Haha! Which begs the question w/ that work ethic and ingenuity, “What did you do for a career?”

My 8th grade grandson has been playing the past few winters in a no coach 3 on 3 league. Kids from different schools are learning to talk, to help, and to set screens. I questioned it at first, but in their conference league, he's become more of a leader.
