Purdue has played through the post the last 5 years. 3 years with Hammons, 1 year with Swanigan & Hammons and one year with Swanigan & Haas. It’s hard to argue with the results (especially the last 3 years).

I think this year will be Purdue’s best offensive team under Painter. It’s also a return to a perimeter oriented offense. My guess is Haas numbers improve, but he is going to be asked to do far less in the offense.

For the past five years Purdue has been easy to scheme for. They are a nightmare to scheme for this year. 4 starters can put up 20 any night. The ball is moving so quickly around the perimeter with players who can attack the rim. Add to that when they go to their bench, spacing gets better as Haarms is more comfortable in the high post.

I hope the defense and rebounding can keep up with this offense. From a coaching standpoint Painter has worked through his strength the last five years. This year his strength is on the perimeter which suits his style more in my opinion.

I think a lot hinges on Mathias and C Edwards. If they keep hitting from the outside like this, it stretches the D and will help cover the gap left by Biggie from a rebounding perspective. They look great so far! We will know more Tuesday!

I agree with continuing to shoot well from outside. It’s more than that though. V Edwards with a four guarding him attacks the rim more. Carsen and PJ are both really solid at breaking people down on the dribble. That was an option much the last two years especially with two bigs on the floor.

I think we will still be looking at Haas in the post when he is in the game. If the defense doesn't double we will end up with a high percentage shot in the paint against most opponents. If they do then hopefully we can get a good look at an outside shot or find someone cutting to the basket.

I'm also intrigued by the possibility of playing both Haarms and Haas together at times. I think Haarms feeding Haas from the high post could be very effective when the defense is fronting Haas. Swanigan was very effective in getting the ball to both Hammons and Haas for dunks from that position and it would seem Haarms height and passing skills would allow him to do this effectively as well.

PJ is not good at breaking the D down off the dribble. He's a steady ball handler at feeding the post and hitting open 3's, but he's not a creator and getting others open looks. In fact, I've seen teams purposely let him get into the lane because it forces him to try and make a tough decision whether to shoot and risk getting it blocked or make a tough pass in traffic.

PJ doesn't have to be with the players on this team. He plays a role and does it incredibly well. Why would PJ need to be a player that needs to breakdown players on the outside when there are 3 capable other players who can do that same thing...and another 1 to 2 on the bench with that ability as well (Eastern and possibly Cline who has shown growth in that regard already).

The good news is Purdue runs a motion offense so he doesn't need to be.

Any two of Haas, Haarms, and Taylor will be fun to watch.
