OT: Your time at Purdue

Undergrad 2010-2013 ... Current Graduate Student.

Favorite XXX meal - Drew Brees Special

Favorite Drink - Anything from Harry's

Not a fountain run guy.

Favorite place to study - My home.

Hardest Class - Have done well enough that no specific classes have cause me much stress,, but favorite was PHYS660 Quantum Mechanics

Best Sports Memory
Football - I don't talk about football.

Basketball - Robbie Hummel return

Most Frequented Bar - Harry's no contest.

Most Frequented Restaurant - Black Sparrow.

Frequency of Breakfast Club - Once a year.

Frequency of co-rec visits - Everyday.

Boiler Up my friends!

Graduated 93

Favorite XXX meal - Breakfast Special
Favorite Drink - Long Island Tea at Harry's... Honorable Mention to the trashcan of Beer at Pete's on Trashcan night... Nevermind that it was a trashcan that could hold maybe 5 paper wads
Fountain - Was back on campus early the year they put in the one on the engineering mall, and some friends & I (& many others) went down there. Couple other times
Favorite place to study - Engineering library with the posse
Hardest Class - Diff EQ mainly because I could not understand the prof at all & consequently decided it would be a good idea to just skip all the classes & try to figure it out on my own. All A's in math in my life to that point, and I got a C (barely).
Best Sports Memory - Big Dog dominating
Most Frequented Bar - Nick's (I think that was the name of the place with dancing down on the levee? Macaws? Memory Failing...) Our engineering study crew would get sloshed once done studying & go there & dance ineptly to classics such as Ice Ice Baby, Funky Cold Medina, Push It (Real Good)... Work Hard - Play Hard was a good motto (still is)
Most Frequented Restaurant - La Bamba for late night giant chorizo burritos (& on my 21st, a subsequent explosive chorizo vomit, outside thankfully)
Frequency of Breakfast Club - Few times - had a girlfriend for a while who was into it with her sorority sisters & I joined in the fun
Frequency of co-rec visits - Varied from almost never to several times a week depending on the year

Transferred in after a year & half at another college.

Always lived off campus in an apartment.

Study was done at the library for the most part. I was a pretty serious student at the time, so I didn't spend much time playing around, so I didn't have a favorite bar. .

Favorite restaurant: Sarge's out on the by-pass. I think it is long gone now, but they were pretty good in the day, and fancy for WL. A good place to have your dad buy you a dinner.

Hardest class was Electromagnetic Theory (Don't recall the number). It made me switch majors from Physics to Math, and take a minor in Physics. Ugh! DiffEQ taught by a foreign national was also tough.

Had a girl friend/fiancé back in Anderson, so I was on the road Friday night, and got back Sunday. Never hit the local bars. A lot guys would talk about all the action they got, but I had them beat for the most part. Wound up marrying that girl.

Favorite sports moment: Any of the Big Dog Games. Just wow!

The drink specials at bars were pretty epic. In the early 90s, I can remember schooner night at Preston's on Monday, mug night at the Winking Lizard on Tuesday, and penny beer night at Tom's on Wed and Thursday. On a day like today, it's nice to remember better times!

That would be Sarge Biltz. Long gone but a good place in it's day.

The profs in Physics 151 were pretty open about the fail rate of the class. Although I distinctly remember hearing a dean telling us in Freshman Engineering Orientation that half of us won't be engineering students at Purdue in 2 years. And he was right.

Now they like to say there is no such thing as a weed out class. Yeah, right.

Speaking of the levee, there used to be a park down there right by the river that had some basketball courts where you could find a pretty decent pickup game most afternoons when the weather was decent. Not sure if those are still around or not.
Tapawingo Park is still there. Played there a lot between 1979-1983. Chauncey Hill Park was also a great place for a pickup game. Also played a lot on Saturday's at the Armory with my Terry Court's unit--too bad those quonset huts didn't survive.. Damn...these posts bring back a LOT of memories.

Ate a lot of Veno's, LMO (the Piece Hero), and loved getting the window seat at Harry's at lunch for a cup of chili and an ice cold Miller. For a sit down dinner, ate at Pepe's in the Levee. Did the White Castle run to Indy's, too. Drank way too much at Nick's, the Stabilizer and Sgt. Preston's. Also crossed the state line to drink in Watseka, Illinois...that's how desperate we were to get drunk.

I easily skipped 2/3 of all my classes, so studying wasn't a high priority. Ususally went to Stewart Center Library. Amazed I graduated on time.

Best sports memory, easily the 1980 Final Four...and beating IU and ND in anything.

I hate to embarrass myself, but Tapawingo Park? Is that the Sears courts, down by the river?

Always a game down at Sears. Sometimes, some really, really good competition there: ex and present Purdue players. And in the summer, you'd have DII and DIII players home for the summer. Some very high caliber games down there.

The Chauncey Hill park? Is that Tommy Johnson park? I think that's what it was called. (Isn't it still called that?) Loved playing there. On most nights, I could play at Tommy Johnson, and be one the better players, and either keep a court as long as I wanted, or get immediately picked up if I lost. Or I could go down to Sears, and get picked up, but be definitely in the lower 40% talent-wise, and if I lost, I was screwed for the night.

I'm a late 70's into early 80's guy. Does anybody remember a Chinese place on Northwestern right where it ran into State Street at the top of the Hill. It was where that Egyptian Cafe or Khan Grill is now. Don't remember the name of it, but they had a $3.00 dollar lunch special with hot tea that was this huge plate and it was just incredible. Also, did anybody ever go to the Downtowner in Lafayette for Spaghetti night. I think that one was $2.00 if you got water (Remember you youngsters, but this was the early 80's).

One of the best nights of my time at Purdue was when I danced all night to Kool Ray and the Polaroidz at the Stabilizer with an absolutely beautiful sorority girl who was way, way out of my league. We went out about a week later, and she realized (and sadly so did I) that she was beyond me, so it was our only date. Still that one night was incredible.

Best sports memories: Beating ND in football 15 to 14, and Rowinski, as Sports Illustrated called him in an article after the game, "the Polish Prince of Pecs" led us to a huge win over an excellent, excellent Illinois team.

Here's something that'll make you cry if you have paid tuition at any level for your kid's education. I found my tuition bill for my final semester at Purdue, Spring 1983. It was a whopping $675.

No, no, no, I forgot until I read some posts on the first page. My best sports memory is when Purdue beat IU and Bobby to get to the Final Four in '80. Brian Walker twice made Isaiah Thomas look like the idiot he would become when Walker stole the ball and went in for two easy layups. It was a long time ago, but I think he got one in each half. Just beautiful, those steals and the entire game.

I'm pretty sure that my fall tuition in 1979 was around $330 dollars. The funny thing is that back then I thought that was a lot of money.

Yes, the park down by the Sears was Tapawingo Park and the Chauncey Hill park was Tommy Johnston Neighborhood Park...don't know if I ever knew that name. I could be wrong, but I think the Chinese restaurant you're thinking of was called the Peking House (something like that).

And, she wasn't out of your league...no matter what she looked like. ;)

Purdue beat LaSalle, St. John's (both games at Mackey), Indiana and Duke to get to the Final Four to play (and lose to unfortunately) UCLA...before beating Iowa and its twin towers, Steve Krafcisin and Steve Waite...and Ronnie Lester...in the next-to-last NCAA third place game. I didn't have tickets to the game against UCLA, but after Purdue lost I was able to easily get a ticket for the Monday night game against Iowa to see JBC in his last game in a Purdue uni. Rooted for eventual champ Louisville in the title game. Couldn't root for UCLA, Larry Brown and Kiki Vandeweghe....what the hell kinda name is Kiki for a guy? :D

I believe that my first year 1970-71 fees were $350 a semester and housing in Cary for the year was $960. A kid could actually work all summer and pay for the full year of school.

As should be obvious, I graduated in 1969 so the sports memories (home games) include beating ND (#1 at that time) in 1965 and 1967 and iu for the Rose Bowl in 1966 - in basketball, the most enjoyable thrashing of iu 120-76 in 1969. Great grad school memories after a stint in the Air Force were non-existent.
Studied in dorm room (Tarkington) and when on campus in a comfortable, quiet lounge at the east end of the Union. Really plush leather sofas and chairs more conducive to napping than studying. I believe that lounge was replaced during a renovation.
Bars frequented that no longer exist were the Tar Pit and the Pig and Whistle; that still exist, Harry's, of course.
As far as difficult classes were concerned, I was a poli sci/history major. What difficult classes?

Ahhh the affordable college education! I worked two jobs each summer and was able to pay for classes and room and board and still had a little beer money left over. Oh how the times have changed. My oldest just graduated this past spring he would have had to work 4 jobs and probably still come up short.

Maybe the 80's weren't so bad after all!!

What a time. Griese, Mount, Mollenkopf. Was the lounge in the Union a reading room with a stereo for classical music. If so I was in there a few times as well when I had a couple hours between classes. Wasn't the Pig the place where you threw your peanut shells on the floor down on the Levee?

I thought that was the Ground Round...but, maybe there was more than one place like that?

Ground Round.....that brings back memories. Forgot about Mountain Jacks and there was a great chinese buffet restaurant in Lafayette.....closed years ago.....I think at a hotel.....name escapes me right now.

No one's mentioned Morris Bryant's either, that I've seen at least. On Friday night during football season, you could eat with the team.

Seems nobody has mentioned a friendly game of pool and a couple of beers with the locals at the Bare and Ball!!!

I was in Lafayette for a family gathering on Labor Day weekend and stayed at HI Express out on 26 at I65. If you remember the great old Hour Time Restaurant with the massive 4 sided clock on the roof the restaurant has closed and the clock was removed and was sitting in a vacant lot next to the hotel. Apparently there is an auction for the clock. The restaurant is closed as part of a hotel renovation.

It also had a huge four-sided fireplace/pit in the middle into which peanut shells could be tossed. Some great psychedelic light shows at the Tar Pit.

My apartment phone number was 1 digit off of the Sears auto shop number. We would get calls weekly, if not daily and would always answer the phone "Sears Automotive" and play the part of concerned mechanic telling those people that misdialed how bad and expensive their repairs would be. The girls were the funniest because they would call back and tell us how mean we were...

Love this kind of thread!
At Purdue: 1995-1999
Favorite XXX: The Boilermaker Pete
Favorite Drink: "the Green Dragon" at Wabash Yacht Club (which everyone still called Stacks)
Fountain Run: a few times
Favorite place to study: I spent a couple of all-nighters in the study lounge at Hillenbrand Hall
Hardest class: History of Africa and the West, not so much because of the content but something about the prof's voice would put me to sleep.
Best Sports Memory: Football upset of Notre Dame in 1997...watching Adrian Beasley return that fumble down the sideline was the most excited anyone had been in Ross-Ade in a long time.
Most frequented bar: the aforementioned Wabash Yacht Club, Jake's, TA Tom's, and Harry's of course
Most frequented restaurant: love seeing AJ Wingers mentioned, I ordered a lot of Pepper Pete's and Mad Mushroom, and Alfano's for stuffed breadsticks.
Never really a breakfast club guy.
Played occasional pickup basketball with some guys from our floor at Co-Rec

Definitely great times.

Any of you old timers remember my grandfathers place The Park and Eat? I was too young to remember much about it. I know he hated McDonald's. Felt they put him out of business
