As was mentioned in a thread below, most Purdue fans probably went to Purdue. So, what stories do you have?

Favorite meal at XXX?
Best drink at which bar?
Were you a frequent fountain runner?

Happy to start... my freshman year was Fall 96.

1) Boilermaker Pete at XXX.
2) Tie for drinks for me... Harry's made a killer Long Island that would knock you out and what could be better than listening to Bruce in the piano bar of the Neon Cactus while throwing back Baltimore Zoos.
3) And h*ll yes, fountain runs in the middle of the night with my boys from Wiley hall were a common thing. I was lucky to be at Purdue before they put in the safety pipes so we could run right through the center of the engineering fountain.

Lots of great memories at Purdue!

1. Depends on time of day/night. If I'm getting a burger it's the Bernie. For breakfast it's the XXX special with sausage instead of bacon.
2. Beer. Anywhere. Harry's or Cactus especially.
3. Just once (late 90's) to say I did it.

1. I'm not a huge XXX fan. We always have to eat at Arni's when we're in town. Although the dining halls are actually very impressive now.

2. Colorado Root Beer at Harry's.

3. Once, to say I did it.

I'll add some more:

4. FAVORITE PLACE TO STUDY
Stacks in the Stewart Center Library

5. HARDEST CLASS
Dynamics, sophomore year

6. BEST SPORTS MEMORY
Football - College Gameday in town before the 2004 Wisconsin game.
Basketball - Beating Wisconsin and storming the court in 2008

7. MOST FREQUENTED BAR
Harry's

8. MOST FREQUENTED RESTAURANT
When I was in school, probably Qdoba/Chipotle. Or Pizza Hut at Purdue West

9. FREQUENCY OF BREAKFAST CLUB
Couple times a year - maybe 1 football game and on Grand Prix

10. FREQUENCY OF CO-REC VISITS
Tried to go everyday. Really jealous of the facilities available to students now.

4. FAVORITE PLACE TO STUDY
Dorm

5. HARDEST CLASS
Probably operating systems

6. BEST SPORTS MEMORY
Football - Beating ND in 1997 and the Michigan St comeback that same year (I think).
Basketball - Chad Austin's game winner in Bloomington in 1997

7. MOST FREQUENTED BAR
Neon Cactus

8. MOST FREQUENTED RESTAURANT
Sadly, it was probably Fazolis... but I sure took advantage of free breadsticks.

9. FREQUENCY OF BREAKFAST CLUB
Never actually did breakfast club.

10. FREQUENCY OF CO-REC VISITS
Almost every day... except when rehabbing a torn ACL I suffered during an intramural game. Sad thing is I was filling in for another team that night.

1. Biscuits and gravy.

2. I bartended at different places at Purdue
So whatever I made!!

3. Never did. I don't remember it being a big tradition when I was there. Maybe I'm just old and senile!!

Favorite meal at XXX? Boilermaker Pete
supplement - favorite late-night euchre order? Veno's/LMO/Indy White Castle "run"

Best drink at which bar? Harry's Long Island for liquor.....Nick's on the Levee pitcher night for beer...
supplement - best party/drinks? vodka lemonade toga party somewhere in Lafayette....to this day, I could not find the house.

Were you a frequent fountain runner? no.....don't recall that being as big a deal back then....I did get the 21st birthday in the Wabash experience.....
supplement - were you around to ever "witness" a nude olympics? yes; but no participation

Also "participated" in an unofficial battle on the Purdue South course...complete with bottle-rockets, fire crackers, and a roman candle......several amorous couples were unintentionally disturbed.......casualties of "war" all in the name of science I suppose......

____________________________

Favorite underrated Purdue game experience? watching Curt Clawson drain a deep jumper as time expired to defeat the talented Soviet National team, which included a young athletic Sabonis.....10,000+ arms went up in unison.....one of the loudest roars I've heard anywhere...bedlam for a few minutes.

Favorite run-in(s) with Purdue Sports personalities?
- Coach Keady hitting into me on the formerly known Purdue North course
- Kevin Stallings and Larry Clisby joining my twosome for several holes on the formerly known Purdue South course and recording an eagle on the third hole
- meeting Jim Rowinski working out at the co-rec the same day Purdue had defeated Indiana in Bloomington in the conference championship season of 1984.

6. In addition to one already posted (among many) - football: Notre Dame 15-14 in '81 and #2 Ohio State 28-23 in '84; basketball: Illinois '84 (home) (loudest I've ever heard it in Mackey Arena), '83 (away) - Rowinski's bank shot capping a huge comeback; Indiana '85 (Atkinson hounds Alford), Iowa (before TMHR days) '83....Steve Reid game-winner....with CGK and Lute Olsen having several exchanges.

7. Nick's/Harry's (not that often)

8. Duff's in Lafayette (smorgasbord buffet)/Pizza Keg

9. ??? - N/A

10. Just about every day - several times a week - some crazy pick-up teams.....several intramural softball teams as well (CF)

Graduated in '95.

Never once went to XXX.

Drank Barcardi and Cokes at Stacks most nights. Friday afternoon Baltimore Zoos at Harry's.

Never ran through a fountain.

Studied most often at Potter. St. Toms, Union, or Undergrad next.

IE336 - Probability Theory was my worst grade. Dynamics was tough too.

Favorite bar was easily Stacks.

Favorite sports memory was probably beating IU in 1992. I walked into Mackey an IU fan (both parents have multiple IU degrees) and walked out a die hard Boiler.

I was at Purdue from the fall of 1983 until graduation December 1988, finally. I stayed at McCutcheon, Cary, Shreve, and Hawkins. The Co-Rec was my second home for pick-up basketball games, racketball, and weightlifting. I thought the Co-Rec was top notch then. I can't imagine what available there now. Attended a couple of the so called "Nude Olympics" and no I did not participate.

During my time at Purdue, the football team had good players but bad teams. To get football tickets all we had to do was to provide a student ID and get a voucher for tickets to the home games. They must have allocated money from tuition or something. Ross Ade was nearly full most home games. I enjoyed watching Scott Campbell, Jim Everette, Kevin Sumlin, Mark Jackson, and Rod Woodson. It was a privilege to watch Woodson play football for 4 years. Arguably the best athlete in Purdue history. Sorry old-timers I know Leroy Keys was great. There are two games that stand out for me with Woodson. One is the 1985 game against Ohio State. After Purdue took the lead late in the game, Ohio State is moving the ball down the field. Woodson saves the day and intercepts Mike Tomczak pass in the end zone for a pick 6. Then there is the Bucket game with that little team from Bloomington, IN. This is Woodson's last game at Purdue. Y'all know the story. He played both ways with significant rushing and receiving yardage and returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown. I never seen anyone do that since.

Now for hoops. Purdue had good players and teams but could not get over the hump to get to the final 4. The Big Ten was loaded with good teams every year. When the Three Amigos(Todd Lewis, Todd Mitchel, and Everette Stephens) arrived on campus, Purdue basketball was fun to watch. To bad we did not have The Paint Crew back then. There was no defined student section. Purdue won the Big Ten championship three times I think during this time. But broke my heart when they lost that big lead in the Elite 8 game against Kansas State and lost. 'Til this day I can't stand Mitch Richmond.

My favorite eating places were Garcia's Pizza, Dominoes, Brunos, basically any pizza restaurant. I did go Triple X but it was just a typical diner to me at the time. I did not realize the traditional significance at the time until years later. For Greek food we ate at The Parthenon.

Being from "Da Region" I enjoyed the Chicago dance club scene so at Purdue we went to places where the music was. Therefore, I probably only went to Harry's once or twice. Like Triple X, I didn't realize the so called tradition at the time. Early on we went to the The Stabilizer. We would go Nicks, particularly for the cover bands they would bring in. Later on when McCaw's opened up. That's where we went for the Chicago style dance atmosphere. They played a lot of the Chicago house music that was popular at the time. Even Chicago house music DJ Bad Boy Bill was invited to DJ live one night. McCaw's was also the the place where the aforementioned Rod Woodson and some friends was busted stealing the bartender tip jar full of money. He came back to the area to visit friends after his rookie season with the Steelers.

I remember every Wednesday and older man with a red baseball cap, carrying a Bible would show up on the Memorial Mall area. This was the infamous Brother Max. He was one of those traveling fiery preachers that damned everybody to hell and called Purdue women whores.

Favorite meal. Dominos Pizza it was cheap and they delivered.

Favorite Bar. Mr. Bills played foosball all night.

Visited co rec 3 times a week to lift and play racquet ball.

Took 3rd place in Grand Prix was crew chief. Still keep the plaque hanging in my man cave. Lead most of the race.

Won all campus championship in fast pitch softball. Played 3rd base. Ended the game when a smash was hit to me, stepped on 3rd and threw to first for the game ending double play.

Best sports memory. Easy the final four in 1980.

Hardest class Physics 252. Got a negative score on a test. Still pulled off a C though.

Proudest of all three of my children attend Purdue. Two got their degrees.

Regarding favorite places to eat, there was a place in the late 90's called AJ Wingers which I thought was fantastic. I think it was where Panda Express is now or just south of that. I had an apartment just over on Salisbury for a couple of years and every Sunday before football started I'd go over to AJ Wingers and grab their buffalo chicken sandwich. Overall, it probably wasn't much different than what you'd get at Buffalo Wild Wings today but I don't believe there was such an establishment anywhere in Lafayette at the time (the Levee was pretty much a hole back then). About the only sports bar I can remember that had NFL Sunday ticket (or whatever the package was back then) was Damons over by the interstate.

Speaking of the levee, there used to be a park down there right by the river that had some basketball courts where you could find a pretty decent pickup game most afternoons when the weather was decent. Not sure if those are still around or not.

I played several times down there.....those were the days.....at one time, wasn't there a Sears near those courts? That dates me I guess....it's been a little while since I have been back in Lafayette.

No one has mentioned Pierce Street Station as their favorite watering hole yet. One of my friends got in there once with a borrowed New York state voter registration card (with no photograph).

While I'm here, I'll share another undergrad memory: One evening a couple of my friends and I were walking through the Union Building where we saw a number of men in tuxedos and women in formal evening dresses. We learned that the occasion was the President's (Artie Hansen) annual dinner for the Board of Trustees. This must have been around the Spring of '75, because streaking was big at the time. At any rate we determined that a streak was in order, and I volunteered to do it. We went up to the third floor men's room where I stripped to just my shoes and a long Navy pea coat I bought for $3 at the Five-Points Army/Navy Surplus store. We went back down to the first floor where I threw off the coat and started running down the hallway, tapping the men on the shoulder as I went by. The campus police must have been expecting something because I turned around to see that one was running after me down the hall. I got to the end of the hall where the stairs lead down to the awning on the east side of the building, and then I continued down the next flight and ran through the Sweet Shop where my friends met me with my coat. The cop must have thought I'd run out under the awning, and the three of us strolled out the west door of the building.

1) I never once ate at XXX
2) I bartended at Harry's so my favorite drink was: A lot
3) only ran through the fountain once, on accident, while on mushrooms my freshman year.
4) I didnt study much outside of my apartment. I didnt even know where the library was until my junior year.
5) Hardest class - any class that was before 10AM
6) Best sports memory - 50 yard line at the Rose Bowl in 01. we didnt win but i had the best time
7) Frequented bars - when i wasnt at harry's i would go to the Knickerbocker or Lafayette Brewing Co.
8) AJ wingers - Buffalo chicken with insane sauce
9) I worked a lot of B-clubs. I remember the scene better than any one acutal day - all the drunken debauchery. Remember the hot dog lady with the duck hat? The stories she must have.
10) Never once went to the co-rec. Or the library. Or to the student union. Or a pep rally. Or the actual Grand prix race.

I spent most of my days protesting, occupying administrative buildings.... Smoked a lot of tidestick.... Occasional acid flashback. Fact is, i dont remember most of it - The Dude.

My Purdue career inspired the Beatles "Long and Winding Road". Freshman living in the Quad in fall 1970. Had a great time and ran out of money due to an older girlfriend and having too good of a time. Laid out the 71 year and worked for the IN Dept of Transportation operating heavy equipment. Back in the fall of 72 living in the Quad. Got busted the first weekend for having beer in the dorm and was on double secret probation for the rest of the fall. Didn't return for the spring. Worked for Alcoa in Lafayette from 1973-1988. Took a few classes here and there but lacked a burning desire to complete. Married in 1975 and 4 kids by 1981. In Spring 1984 I took a couple of entry level classes and decided to be an audiologist. Starting fall 1984 was a married student going to school full time during the day and working full time in tool & die at Alcoa on midnights and living in an old house that we'd bought in Lafayette and also working on renovating it. Finished a BS in 1987. Worked full time at Alcoa 87-88 to build up a reserve. Quit Alcoa in Aug 88 and started grad school that same month. Worked weekends at the old Checker station out on 52 NW closing evenings. Loneliest place in the world closing after a home FB game with thousands in the inside safe and locking up and walking out to the car in the dark. In 89-90 had a grad assistantship that paid a few bills and gave me campus office space. Finished my MS in 90 and left the Lafayette area forever. Have lived in western KY, southwest IN and far southern IL since then.
1. Didn't really discover XXX until the late 70s. Favorite had to be the biscuits and gravy. When I returned to school in 84 I'd grab a shower after working all night, then hit the XXX for breakfast before going to class.
2. Did very little bar time in school until grad school when a couple of beers and a cheeseburger at Harry's was often lunch.
3. I live through the time of two fountains. When I first arrived the Loeb fountain was in front of Hovde and was later moved. Never ventured into either but have seen the Loeb fountain filled with soap suds on more than one occasion.
4. Favorite place to study changed over time from the main stacks, to Pharmacy library to an office at home, an office at Alcoa when I could steal the time, and eventually an office on campus.
5. Can't remember which ones but they had to do with my decision that I wasn't going to be a pharmacist.
6. Have to put Otis Armstrong's day against IU in 1972 at the top of my football memories.
7. Harry's .
8. In my freshman year we hit a place called Orlando's which was over by Arth Drugs across from the old Fieldhouse. Little Italian hole-in-the-wall owned by Bruno's brother. Later it was Arni's and Taco Bell. When you're feeding 6 people on grad student money you hit a lot of taco Tuesdays.
9. Never hit a breakfast club.
10. Hit the Co-Rec daily in my first couple of years but had little time for recreation in the later years.

You rattled my old memory. In 1972 I had an Econ recitation on Saturday at 7:30 AM. Never was a colder, darker walk for a more wasted, useless class than the walk from the Quad to Krannert.

Favorite place to study: Please see line above!!
Ice Cold beer at Harry's on a Friday afternoon.
Went to the Co-Rec a couple times a week for hoops and girl watching.
Best basketball memory was beating Alford and Co. in Mackey and thought the roof was coming off.

Lots of great memories at Purdue!
Oh , my, you guys make me feel so sheltered! The Duane Purvis All-American was (is?) the greatest burger on or near campus. XXX was a luxury until Jr/Sr year. Been to Harry's only twice; my first Friday on campus I was stunned to see people lining up on the sidewalk, in the rain, to enter! My thinking was, "Bunch of Rah-Rah college kids." What a fool! Hardest class was anything Science. Oh, how you people earn my respect for majoring in Engineering or any of the Sciences! Favorite place to study became Heav. Hall after hours. Find an empty room; they wouldn't lock up til 11 or midnight. Was there not a place---pre-new library---called the Bookstall, cramped away on the second floor near what was then the library? (Cannot think of the name of the building directly across from the Union.) I'd go there alot, but mostly to check out pretty girls. Nude Oly's and Fountain...never. .In my time, the bidding wars for pizza were between Vino's, Dominoes, and Bruno's. All offered, at varying times,a $5.95 large sausage & pepperoni WITH FREE quart of iced fountain pop! Sports memories were too numerous to mention, but finishing top 10 in FB and Final 4 in B-Ball made for an awesome freshman year---I lived for those ballgames! The Co-Rec was like a luxury spa to me: 10 full court basketball courts! Anyone could pick up a game, or play full court alone if one chose. 2-3 weekly easily. Never knew why I didn't swim there. (Speaking of difficult classes; I'd always heard a rumor that there was a engineering flunk-out physics course, supposed to be the toughest undergrad course in America, or something, where the prof guaranteed that 2/3 of the class would be gone by semester end. Any truth to this?)

See. This is the kind of discussion that makes me love the fact that we don't have a huge subalum faction like IU or Notre Dame. When they meet other fans the more likely discussion is whether they got their shirt from the Walmart on the north or south side of town.

I think it's interesting how diverse everyone's experiences were. There are so many things listed that I never or rarely ever did.

I had 7:30 Saturday English freshman year... I remember being hungover jogging to that class, sliding on icy patches for fun in the winter. Who the hell thought 7:30am anything was ok?

I had several 7:30am classes, but the EE lab on Sat morning was the worst. It lasted till 10:30. This was in the late 60's. Then they started scheduling the home football game for 11:00am to accommodate TV. It was very difficult to make the opening kickoff. It became very obvious that college athletics were more about the money than the students. But, I like to think the 7:30 class helped me down the road when my office work schedule started at 6:00am.

No mentions by anyone of the Alfano's stuffed breadstick. mid80's late night delivery grub?
Oh yeah. Definitely. I remember freshman year in the dorm (go Terry Courts!) calling Papa Johns when they had just opened and making up random coupons that we said we had and they always granted them and never asked for them at delivery. I'm pretty sure we got two large pizzas for $5 all year long and never once had a coupon or even knew if that was a legit promotion.

Would like to mention one of my favorite sports memories and it came in 1969. The big 10 would only let one team go to the NCAA tournament and it had to be the conference champ. We lead the nation in scoring that year and beat out a very tough Iowa team to make the tournament.

Our first game was at Wisconsin and we played Miami of Ohio. Chuck Bavis was our monster center and he got hurt in that game. Our next opponent was Marquette coached by Al McGuire.

I ended up getting tickets through some sort of lottery from the Purdue athletic department and got a small band of students together to go to Madison. I was the only one with a car so I got to drive. We get up there without lodging and one of the guys was a frat that got us into his house on the Wisconsin campus to sleep on the floor. We were kids and this was great.

So we won the first game as I mentioned and the next day went over to the field house to watch the Boilers practice. They were in the middle of a team meeting when we sat down on the bleachers and after a minute, assistant coach Joe Sexson came over to talk to us. I thought this was cool as he would welcome us and ask us to quiet down. But he informed us that the pactice was closed and we had to leave. Funny that the doors were wide open allowing anyone to walk in on a closed practice.

We get to the game with Marquette and I had seats in the 10th row, on the sidelines about 3 quarter court. The team benches were on the other side of the court. This fieldhouse was almost identical to Hinkle over at Butler. So the game went on and Herm Gilliam had a bum ankle so he wasn't doing well against their All American forward. And then Billy Keller got in foul trouble and Weatherford had to play a lot. We started to slip behind in the last 10 minutes of the game. All of a sudden, Gilliam blocks a layup, sending us down the floor to get the game within 2 points. Marquette brought the ball up the floor, using their All American, and George Faber pressed him. He got to the 10 second line and George punched the ball away. Weatherford go it, drove to the foul line and hit the tying shoot. We made it to overtime.

During the break, the TV crews were all over the Marquette huddle. I don't know Al did it, but he didn't throw a tantrum at them to give them room to strategize. No one bothered our huddle.

The overtime went our way with Rick Mount hitting the winning shot as time ran out. It was one of his patented dribble drives off the Jerry Johnson screen from the side of the key. John deCamp would always say "Swish" went it went in and I am sure all of you listening on the radio heard that with great glee.

All of the Purdue fans rushed the floor. A guy with a sign came up to me and said to get on his shoulders and hold up the sign for all to see. He was about 6'3" and I am 5'8", so that is how I got picked. We moved around the floor with me on his shoulders and me waving the sign. I don't remember exactly what it said, but it had something to do with Purdue basketball being a great team.

I don't remember the drive back to campus.

My very first semester I had classes all day on Fridays from 7:30 in the morning until I think 5:20 in the afternoon with only one hour off the entire day. I think there were 2 labs in that.

I graduated in May of 2012:

1) Favorite XXX meal - Drew Brees special, hands down
2) Favorite Sports Moment - Beating #2 OSU in Mackey in 2011, watching EM explode for 38. The 2007 basketball season was really neat too. Being in the same class as the baby boilers was really cool to watch them rise onto the national scene.
3) Favorite place to study - 3rd floor of Rawls (of course after getting all jacked up on Den Pops)
4) Favorite Bar - Spurlocks on the Levee. They had a special on Thursday nights, 32oz domestics for $0.50. Pregaming there and closing the night at the Cactus made for some ridiculously stupid nights
5) Hardest Class - Calc 2
6) Frequency of co-rec visits - 6 days a week. Loved working out and then playing pick up ball afterwards
7) Restaurant - My favorite restaurant was and still is Brunos (peanut butter chocolate chip pizza is to die for). Most frequented, Subway.

Favorite place to eat (went to XXX a few times but not a regular): LaBamba. Would order a Super Chicken Chorizo, extra sour cream.
Also ate a lot of Jimmy John's back then.
Favorite bars: Harry's (Rum and a splash of Coke) and Stacks.
Study place: Lilly Hall since it was close to my house.
Played hoops at the co-rec often with guys from my house. 5 on 5 runs were solid.
Our fraternity won the campus flag football championship 3 years in a row and we got invited to play in a national tourney in New Orleans.
Favorite sports memories: Having Sr seats in the lower section for Big Dog's second year.
Beating iu on a last minute interception in the end zone, storming the field, tearing down the goal posts and parading them down State St and tossing them into the Wabash River.

Best sports moment was Brees to Morales without a doubt.
that ball seemed to hang in the air forever and I still remember the mix of terror and excitement as I bounced up and down in the stands like a kindergartner when he launched that ball. It was absolutely unforgettable.

We probably bumped into each other once or twice late night ordering rum and cokes at Stacks then a burrito bigger than our heads at La Bamba. Good times.

Graduated - 1978

Favorite XXX meal - Duane Purvis now. When on campus, the breakfast special.
Favorite Drink - Just a beer drinker, then and now.
Never ran through the fountain. Wasn't as popular in the 70s.
Favorite place to study - EE Building Student Lounge with the rest of the lounge rats
Hardest Class - EE311 - Electromagnetics, Honorable Mention Physics 261
Best Sports Memory -
Football - Beating #1 ranked Michigan in football in 1976, 16-14. Student section was so loud the
Michigan quarterback couldn't hear himself think
Basketball - Winning the NIT in '74, back when the NIT meant something
Most Frequented Bar - The Stabilizer. Most of my EE buds would go there
Most Frequented Restaurant - Arni's and a sub shop down on the levy, forget the name.
Frequency of Breakfast Club - When did it start? Didn't have it in the 70s.
Frequency of co-rec visits - Couple times a semester. Too much studying to do as a EE major.

Physics 151. I had the exact same textbook my senior year in high school and got an A. Took it freshman year and got a C (and was relieved!).
(Speaking of difficult classes; I'd always heard a rumor that there was a engineering flunk-out physics course, supposed to be the toughest undergrad course in America, or something, where the prof guaranteed that 2/3 of the class would be gone by semester end. Any truth to this?)

The profs in Physics 151 were pretty open about the fail rate of the class. Although I distinctly remember hearing a dean telling us in Freshman Engineering Orientation that half of us won't be engineering students at Purdue in 2 years. And he was right.
