Having seen this team live last year dismantle our Boilers. Living in the Nashville area and seeing them again today. This is the team that worries me the most.

Big, athletic, well coached and good shooters. They also know us well after playing us last season and having Stallings for a coach.

Should be interesting seeing them play IU tomorrow night. It will give us an idea of what to expect in both games and I think they beat IU by a decent margin.

IU doesn't have the depth and experience, let alone the size to beat Vandy. They will have to shoot lights out to win and I think Vandy ca. Shoot right there with them.

Whoever is doing the game with Walton probably thought he had it made this week until he realized who he had to work with. I would've declined and went to a cold region instead.

Putting on a show right now against St Johns. Up 30-5 in the first 10 minutes.

I agree and think we beat both.

But Vandy looks better then last year and we struggled stopping their shooters.

It was before we turned up the D. But I see them as our biggest test OCC.

Winning on the road at Pitt will be tough. But Vandy matches up to us well and once again. They won't be surprised by our size.

C'mon, Pete, can't you hear it:

"That pass was Horrrrr-able.....Oh Pleeeeze......one time....just pass the ball one time to the right guy. Can we do that pleeeeeze. That was un-beeee-leeeeevable.......has there every been a better shooter than Riley LaChance? If he had 8 more inches.....he' d be Detlef Schrempf! Fred Roberts.....loook owout."

Seriously, I expect Vanderbilt to give the Boilers all they can handle, but I'm not so sure they want to try and match Indiana offense-for-offense.....should be a good game regardless.

I went to that game last year in Nashville, (sat beside Cardinal behind the bench)

Painter will have these guys ready, because they embarrassed us last year. Mackey will be absolutely rocking for that game. It will be a great test as Vandy will prob be in the top 15 all year.

I'm not saying that it won't be a great test, but I wouldn't draw many conclusions from last year's game. Purdue was awful in December.

Won't be any students there. And I also wouldn't be surprised if it's not sold out.

Kevin is detached from Purdue and sees it as just another game although this game will be two very good teams going at it with one wanting to even the score this year at home. I'm sure he has "some" difference of opinions with Gene on how he was used as a player. Huge game for Purdue...should be a good one

TJ,

Wasn't he an assistant under GK for several years? I'll defer to you and others on his level of attachment, but I've never heard anything either way come to think of it.

I'd say they "handled" Purdue last season. Games like the one vs. Notre Dame and BTT vs. Wisconsin were ones where you could say the Boilers were embarrassed. At least it's in the past. Now it's time for Lehigh.

I talked to Stallings last year before the game. The students were out and I was hanging out by the court in the student selfie when he came in.
He doesn't see this as just another game. He knows the connection and knows the philosophy. He has taken it to Nashville and it's pretty obvious his Purdue roots are still a major part of how he approaches the game.

He may have been used wrong by Keady. But his obviously didn't hold a grudge as he was an assistant for years under Keady.

"
"I am much more of a Vanderbilt person than I am a Purdue person," said Stallings, whose Commodores (5-2) play Purdue (8-2) on Saturday (8 p.m., SEC Network) for the first time since 1965. "So this game is only important to me because it's the next game.

"… It's not really (special). It's an important game because it's our next one and we're coming off a loss and it's a game against a very good team. But in terms of 'Oh, I went to school there,' I have long since been detached from that." found here http://www.tennessean.com/story/spo...llings-claims-vanderbilt-alma-mater/20325393/

I know a person very, very, very well that was in the dressing room in the fall of 1987 and heard Kevin tell Billy Reid that he (Kevin) would have been a much better basketball player had he never listened to Gene. Now a lot of years have passed and perhaps Kevin was right, but I also wonder if he has some animosity towards Gene or Purdue in general? It really doesn't matter what Kevin thinks, it will be a good game. Now Frank Kendrick...yeah, it makes me feel good to see him at the games again...

That is probably true...he probably doesn't hold a grudge. I suspect he doesn't hold an affirmation for Purdue either. Perhaps it is indifference? See my comments to Texas Grad...

Hey, thanks for the follow-up and insights. I suppose there is a way to reconcile what on the surface may seem like inconsistencies. It also appears clear that KS wanted to pave his own way, so I can understand that he would view himself as Vanderbilt guy. Looking forward to that game next month.

Absolutely, I have no idea what Kevin actually thinks. I do know though his comments many years ago to Billy Reid. I wish him well.

Well, he attended, played at, met his wife at, and coached at Purdue.............soooooooooooooo I wish him well too!!

ya know a couple of years ago when Bryson was a senior and Blackmon a junior I was sitting in the chairs on the baseline watching the junior senior all star scrimmage. Every time I would see Frank Kendrick from the time he left Purdue knowing how much of a supporter he was for years and not having anything to do with Purdue it bothered me. Such was our conversation that day. Frank was in school when I was and just a very personable guy. This year in the alumni game Matt apparently got Frank back on track and it is great to see him back at the games.

Kevin, as stated previously may just want to carve his own way and may not have any poor vibes for Purdue or Keady. If he does, they could be legit as well? I'll pull for Kevin to do well in the SEC and hope to beat his a$$ in mackey this year.

Yeah, hard to figure out.......but like everyone said, he wants to blaze his own trail I guess

I like this...
"
A: "It's even more than working for him. After you play for somebody, especially after you get into coaching and see what he did and what he put up with and how hard he fought for us and tried to make us better and tried to make us better against our own will, sometimes, because we didn't understand what he understood.

"When you get to see the other side, get on this side of it and realize you're doing a lot of the same things he did, it gives you a great appreciation for how much he cared about you, how hard he worked for you, how important it was for him that he see you succeed, either on the court or in life. Anyone who is as giving as he was will have a lot of people that revere him and cherish the time spent with him."

So, I imagine Kevin has a few minutes with Rosie sometime when they play...

I'm bumping this because we are gonna have our hands full.

They have the depth and size to match us. They actually have a little bit more.

Our defense will be the difference...hopefully.

Vandy and Notre Dame may have been the two worst beatings Purdue took last year. Purdue has improved a lot since then and it will be a home game with a lot of players remembering the spanking last year.

Yep. As for me, no matter where he calls "home" now, I will always be a Stallings fan. He was a great Boilermaker. And he's continued to do good things since his playing days.

The matchup of Biggie and Jones should be good.

Ray guarded Kornet last year as he was hot from 3 going into the game. I don't think that will be the case this year.

Last year they shot lights out and our defense looked lost at times. It wasn't terrible. Vandy made a lot of contested shots. We just didn't have the rotation to match theirs at the time.

I see us winning. But this is the same team as last year and they too have improved a lot.

They play 12 and have balanced scoring with two 7 footers just like us.

Probably the biggest challenge we face before the conference season begins.

Tomorrows game against Kansas will either be close or uncover their weakness. I'm not sure I want them to lose. I'm torn on that.

Jones appears to be more athletic and Caleb more basketball player. I too think this will be a great game...but I'm going with the Boilers. Purdue is improved ...home and ready to even the record I think...
