There's certainly the issue of the "9:00 p.m. game in February".

There's also the fact there are many more basketball games in a season ticket package. (The article also noted the mid-week games for CBB.)

There's also that a CFB game is more of an event... an all day(?) experience (tailgating, game).

A variety of factors at play, influencing who attends and from how far away.
