How did Jack Nunge 6' 11" get out of Castle HS Indiana and to Iowa? This guy is tearing up the south down here beating both New Albany (Langford 44 pts) and Bloomington South....scoring 20 and 27 and putting up double digit rebound games in the process. Painter who is still actively recruiting bigs....and right here in IN, it seems a good big slipped away. Now do not get me wrong I am fairly positive on Painter recruiting as of late.....but for those who know....

What was it about Nunge that let Painter decide he was not interested, as I have been told on here he is very good at spotting talent early?

My understanding is that Painter got on this board under an assumed name, found out that Nunge wasn't a four star recruit, and then called Nunge to tell him exactly that.

in all Seriousness, did this kid maybe have a late growing spurt?

Don't know, most sites have him @ 6'9" but recent HS tourney articles had him @ 6'11"....but then again everything you know is bigger down here in the south than it, in reality really is (yes I live by iu)

Not sure the story - but I remember some news that Painter watched him a few times.

I think Painter believed he was going to land JJJ or Xavier Tillman and wouldn't have a spot for him on the roster. This is just speculation.

Must be the case as it seems to have worked out poorly this time for Painter who is still searching for bigs and will now have teams face & play against Lunge & Tillman for 4 years and JJ likely for 1

or we assume he likes Purdue. There are plenty of kids from Indiana that wind up at other places like McIntosh.

I think JJ stays at least 2

Or Williams

MP was chasing bigger fish and missed on all of them!!

Hope it works out for Purdue.........Its frustrating to watch B1G games when Indiana players are on other B1G teams.....unless you are looking at them in your rear view mirror like this year.

I personally don't care if we get 'Indiana' kids. I want recruits that fit our needs, are good players and help build our team. To me it doesn't matter if they come from Indiana or Alaska and if I was a coach, I'd want the best player I can get regardless of what state they are in.

I understand that.... winning is #1 priority, no matter where the players come from. Look @ this year's team, where would it be without players from Ohio. And Haas and Carsen from down south....so that is a given.

Still, I like to see a recruiting base built up in the home state where we have 2-4 Indiana kids all the time. This makes it easier to recruit home state in the future. When you can point to home state guys like Hummel, EMoore, JJ, Hammons, DJ Bryd, Terrone Johnson....and now kids like Spike, Biggie, Cline & PJT and add Sasha keep the reputation up for Indiana kids doing well @ Purdue and the Indiana pipeline can be shown to future kids to keep it going.

So it is important for future recruiting to keep the home state pipeline going although for Painter no doubt, that is just 1 avenue of recruiting.

Additionally, for fans watching it is fun to see the hometown Indiana kids do well @ Purdue. Then fans help for places like the Region and FW and even Indy to continue these pipelines to Purdue. So long term implications there.

Isn't Nunge from Southport? I've been watching for years and don't remember a Boiler from Southport. That's IU/KY country. I'm guessing it could be Nunge told Paint he had no interest in Purdue.

I do.

You can win titles with teams of only Indiana kids.

Jack's entire family is from Iowa. I wish we would have gotten him. He is a great young man - he is a high character, great student and a guy who makes his teammates better. Jack's sister is Notre Dame's outstanding outside hitter. As a teacher from Castle, it is great seeing young man like Jack succeed.

Bingo.....exactly this.

He will do well under Fran at Iowa

Don't disagree...but, when those guys are right her in Indiana, it sure is disappointing and frustrating to see them leave.

Best player a coach can get is not the same as the best player by any means...and far too many REALLY good and talented players in Indiana have absolutely no interest in playing for Purdue or Painter...which is a problem unfortunately.

It would be one thing if Painter/Purdue was missing on guys in state but getting guys of equal caliber and talent from anywhere else, including Alaska as you suggest...but that is not happening...it is not a problem limited to Painter certainly, but, with the type of program that Purdue is and Painter has built, it is no coincidence that the best teams that he has had included some of the most talented players from Indiana on them.

Most of the Indiana schools backed off of him. I saw him a lot this summer. He's extremely skilled, but he also played very soft and spent too much time floating around the perimeter. I'm interested to see how he handles to Big 10. If he can put on some muscle and toughen up he can be extremely good. Often times that never happens though.

Don't you think it's a bit early to tell whether not getting this kid worked out poorly for Painter, especially when you are basing it on scores from high school games? Painter has recruited bigs that were very accomplished in high school but didn't continue that success in college.
