There is a girl at a private school here in Indiana that their school doesn't have a basketball program. She will be attending the local high school next year. Would she be eligible to participate with the 8th grade programs at the public school that feeds the high school?

1. the IHSAA has nothing to do with 8th grade, so yes.
2. She is automaticcally eligible for the High school in the district she lives in.
3. If she does ONE practice for ANY sport at a High School and then wants to transfer, she has become involved in the IHSAA transfer for athletic purposes swamp
4. If she enrolls as a freshman at a High School that is not her home district, she is fine to stay there. Transportation is her problem.

OH WAIT - you're asking about her atttending the priv school in 8th grade ... so, yes, she is ELIGIBLE to play for the public school since her school does not have the sport. BUT BUT BUT --- they do NOT have to accept her into their basketball program. If they fear parental push back and stress and drama, they won't take her. You can engage the HS coach to pressure the MS to take her though ... I know several instances in which this worked.

I really appreciate your response. That is the way I had read the high school rules also. The irony is that they let her play volleyball, but now are digging their heals in on basketball. I am afraid what you said is true, and some parents have complained because they are worried about their daughters playing time.

yep. nothing you can do about it. I do think she could play for any MS that would take her and they could drive her.
