Optimistic or pessimistic!

I'd put Conference USA slightly ahead of the WAC where Tiller came from in 95. Not saying he is the next Tiller and Tiller has a longer track record...but it is hard to argue what he did at WKU as an OC and as a HC can't translate simply because he came from the Comference USA. With that argument, Bohl and Tressel shouldn't have been successful because it is totally worlds part from D2 to D1.

I am looking at everything with Brohm and his staff and what I see is a staff that has clearly identified where the program is (probably a lot worse than they expected) and are targeting needs that can help immediately. From my perspective, Brohm was able to shore up the thin LB (McCollum), DB's (Jallow and a number of other players), and WR (massive influx of talent that may in fact usurp every player outside of Phillips during fall camp). He has also identified where players can be better suited to not only help the team but where they are better suited themselves (Rob Simmons move and the package/splitting out of Sparks).

My biggest takeaway is that this staff just isn't afraid of truly holding guys accountable finally. If you were there Saturday, you would agree that you saw more ass chewings because of stupid mistakes than you ever saw from Hazel in four years.
Spot on and exactly how I feel. Great point on the staff demeanor...I noticed the same fire from the position coaches. I'm 100% onboard.

I'm pretty pessimistic but that's just the reality of where we're at. I see a mediocre defense that looked good on Saturday because the offense is so out of sync. I see a mediocre offense that has a new system to learn, and needs a lot of repetitions and practices to really fine tune it. I see 3 wins this season. Maybe 5 to 6 the following.

I hate to say this and ruin my reputation.

But we have 3 WR's that we were all saying 2 months ago could be immediate starters when we signed them who did not play. I expect at least 2 of them to surprise and emerge as key contributors. and maybe one of those TEs will emerge.

and we all know the Cronk saga. We have three incoming offensive linemen who already have the size to play and to start. I have to believe one and maybe two of them will be able to step in, and maybe not start, but be able to provide quality depth once they arrive.

I'm saying they will emerge. That might take 4-5 games. and I said key contributors, not starters.

and somehow, Brohm just offered a 300 pound juco defensive lineman a scholarship. Maybe he can pull another scholarship out of his hat for a juco offensive lineman.

I believe the key to Brohm's offense is being able to provide pass protection and giving Bough time to throw. If we can get a passing game going, our running game should be adequate. I like our defense - especially if we're able to add that 300 lb juco lineman.

and I want to make this point clear, I don't like the 300 lb juco lineman just because he's a juco and ready to contribute immediately . I don't like him just because he's over 300 lbs. I like him because our defensive coord was once the def coord at USC, and I believe he has an eye for talent. I really like our defense.

I'm going out on a limb and saying we win 5 games. Ohio, Illinois, IU, Rutgers, and an upset over Minn or Northwestern.

now back to my reputation. Will I become happy and positive if we win 5 games? No. I'll still whine, complain and be miserable. But I believe if the ball bounces right, we could get lucky and win 5 games.

Or Brohm knows another player is going to be leaving or he is going to pull a scholarship from a player due to academics, behavior, or just lack of discipline within the program (conduct detrimental to the team). I wouldn't be surprised to see 2-3 more players leave during the course of the summer now that spring ball is over. #1 on that list would be Sindelar that wouldn't surprise me.

Sindelar don't even think it as I surely hope not.

this is very painful. I may have to agree with Johnny Doe Boiler .

I love to speculate, and I'm usually pessimistic. I'm not worried about our wide receiver corps. We had several commitments projected as key contributors including the transfer from ND who did not play in the Spring game I think they will get it together in fall practice.

However, I am a little worried about Sindelar. He took a giant step backwards last year after redshirting as a freshman. Each time he entered a game, he looked lost, and it was usually in garbage time against second and third string defenses. I blame Hazell. However, as I read additional coverage of the Spring game and listen to coach spin, I'm not finding any glowing or even negative reports about Sindelar's Spring game performance. I read about a guy wanting to switch positions to QB. And we signed Sipe who was one of our higher ranked commitments, and we brought in that preferred walk-on QB. We seem to be very deep at the QB position. That's 5 QBs on our roster. Sindelar, at one time, was recruited by Brohm for WKU. I think he's a great fit for Brohm's offense. but I would not be shocked if he decided to transfer this Summer much like Etling and Aplebee did. .

I would also not be shocked if we lost 1-2 players due to academic reasons.

Sindelar has elite arm strength but doesn't seem to grasp the scheme yet. Might be his biggest issue. Was impressed with his back foot, defender in his face throw in the spring game.

Too bad he at times misses the easy ones.

I think Sparks may be the 2nd best QB right now behind Blough....BUT Sparks may be kept as strictly the #3 because he may be needed as a WR depending on the fit of the incoming WR's. IF the WR's do end up being good enough to supplant those that are currently on the roster like many hope, I think Sparks will end up seeing more time on the field strictly due to him having a separate package to take advantage of what he can do running the ball. In the event of an injury to Blough, it would be very interesting to see who the reigns would get turned over to. My opinion would be with Sparks.

anybody else notice's brad's cryptic message as part of his article about the recent signing of juco DT Ellis ? he talked about how many grad transfers and jucos brohm had signed, and said there would be more. hmmm

JC DT Ellis may or may not contribute, but they effort is being made to shore up areas of weakness as identified by this staff. You can't ask anything more. At minimum, he has the desired size of a B10 DT. It is definitely interesting to hear they are likely to add more grad transfers, My guess is that would be for guys along the o-line. You have to love this effort to address weak spots so quickly. They want to win and win now. If that doesn't leave you optimistic, I don't know what will. Nothing is ever guaranteed, but you have to love the effort.

I agree but at the same time, a different question: Why do grad transfers transfer? It seem that if a guy is doing well, has a starting job and a year of eligibility left, he'd stay where he is. I'm not being cynical here, just curious.

In one of the signing day press conferences Brohm said there could be as many as 5 or 6 additional players. Nothing cryptic.

BUT NAT ..... you said..................... we have no more scholarships to offer. me thinks that Brohm has taken the time to evaluate our team, given some players a chance to show they are worth keeping. and has made plans to weed out some left-overs not worth keeping around.

Spring practice is over, and Brohm was not really happy, and signed a big JuCo DT, basically out of nowhere to address a need. he signed the WR transfer from ND out of nowhere. he may even sign Zaire. Who knows ?

This is what I like about brohm. he is able to evaluate our team needs and strengths, and he actually TAKES action to fix them. and by fixing them, I mean NOW, not waiting for the next recruiting class or a 5 year rebuild.

You know I won't be satisfied or happy until we have a winning season. And it appears, neither will Brohm.

For a whole host of reasons. Each situation is unique. Same reason 5th year BB players move every year.

.

Two different discussions. People ask what the schollie count is, i gave an answer. Brohm saying what he said means he knows of or anticipates departures.

One thing I'm very confident of! If Brohm feels the need for another offensive lineman, I know he already has several names in mind and is already working the phones. And it could be a grad transfer or Juco or transfer rather than waiting until next spring

At this point i would rather a grad transfer instead of committing multiple years to a JUCO.
