How do you feel after watching the spring game? Cupboard seems to be bare on any depth. I hope no one gets injured maybe they can win three or four.

I feel confident that Brohm will put the players where they need to be to get the most out of them and then scheme towards those advantages. The same for Holt on the defensive side. The issue comes down to depth in a few key areas as I think Brohm has addressed the most glaring of those outside of offensive line (WR, DB, LB). I think the playbof Simmons and Higgins should make Boilers happy for depth at their positions on defense and I think the WR's looked good so the addition of the 4-5 coming in who could conceivably uproot the current starters is great.

The main issue continues to be the tackles. If Brohm can just get one transfer tackle that can come in and play, that would mean a ton for the offense.

Would LOVE a 5th OT (or two).

I'm optimistic. I don't think we win a bunch of games but 5-6 is doable if we stay healthy. This staff is leaps and bounds beyond what we had last year.

Debby Downer here again. If you don't have a solid OL then you don't have a solid football team. I'd love to see us win 6-7 games this year but we won't with the current OL.

Is it possible that a couple of good tackles will show up this summer? Yes. Is it likely? No.

If we win 3-4 and show a glimmer that we have a clue where we are going without clock issues and the appearance of being organized on the sideline we'll be light years ahead of the DH2 years.

The tackle position is an area of great need. Hopefully no injuries occur there or it will be a long season again.

Rome wasn't built in a day. Boris is right. You can get creative at any other position other than the O-line. You either have one or you don't. Good things will come in time. 4 wins and competitive each week will please me.
The news reports in the Indy Star said the defense was credited with 11 sacks in yesterday's scrimmage. ELEVEN! Yikes!

It also said the offense fell apart in the second half. Sound familiar?

My fellow Boiler faithful, we are looking at the Mother Of All Rebuilding Years.

Some receivers yet to come for this next season, and enough time for coaching staff to get things sorted out. I look for team to slowly improve all season, barring any serious injuries

They also didn't play the 1s at skill positions in the second half.

I was impressed with our ability to move the ball early, especially with the pass game when Blough was in there. Sindelar had some good throws too.

We go so far as the OL goes. I don't think they were bad early, but obviously wore down as the game went on. Seeing as we get McCann back in the fall AND get some help with some JuCo bodies I think we will be ok. Not great, just ok.

Saw some good stuff from the first team, enough to make me think we can mix in the newcomers and find a way to move the ball.

For the upcoming season? Pessimistic. The O-line is just atrocious and even with the Brohm magic the WR are green as goose poop. People say the JUCO WR will make some difference but they will only have a summer to get timing down. Not enough time to get ready imo. Three to a maximum of 4 wins would show great progress. Offense will struggle a lot against decent defenses in the big ten. The defense does look salty but not enough to make up for an offense that will struggle.

For the future? Optimistic. The coaches look like really coaches. Finally. The team already looks more disciplined and focused than under haze. The biggest question will be recruiting. Are we going to get the O and D-line players to compete year in and year out in the west? I have no clue. But I like what I see so far for the future.

That is indeed the issue. Before I can get too excited about this new coach, I'll need to see him land some top recruits, expecially OL. Most of the recruiting news I've been reading over the past few years has been "John Doe picked Purdue over Eastern Illinois, Central Michigan and Akron." And that's pretty much what the 2017 incoming class will be, too.

I'm slightly optimistic. Our defense has been horrible for the last 5 years. We now seem to have some talent, a decent scheme, a decent coach, and results. And fewer plays where the player was playing out of position.

On the other side of the coin, our defense registered 11 sacks using a 3/4 scheme which does not bode well for our offensive line. I'm not a fan of redshirting. We are going to need somebody from this year's group of recruits to step up and contribute as a freshmen this fall. Maybe Smart, Beach, Jackson or Washington will be able to provide what our current offensive line could not provide. We've got plenty of talent now at WR, but Blough needs time to throw and our receivers need time to run their routes.

I hate to keep using Knight and Cronk as examples, but freshmen can actually make contributions on the offensive line and provide depth. Maybe Smart or Beach will be that guy that steps in this Fall and becomes an immediate contributor.

I haven't read all the reviews and articles, But I didn't see any mention of Sindelar's name good or bad. He took a huge step backward last year under Hazell. I was hoping he might start making people notice
Him once more rather than being an after thought.

Something Nat mentioned in another thread. Purdue doesn't have any more scholarships left to offer any more transfers or JuCos. So we're going to have to wait until Fall to see if our offensive line can improve.

I also believe our defense will dramatically improve and won't be giving up 40 ppg any longer. We may not win, but we will no longer be blown away.

And I will agree with Boris. Great teams are built around great offensive and defensive lines. USC made their QBs look great because they all day to throw the ball, and they created giant holes for their RBs. That would be nice to see. I liked the signing of Beach and Smart. Hopefully they will be ready to produce immediately.

I would expect only a couple of the WRs we saw yesterday will see significant minutes in the fall. OL is a far bigger concern than WR IMO.

Try to make Chicken Salad out of Chicken _____, insert your own, I know mine, CJB is a Great Hire, but he has no O lineman this year, next year we will be fine. Coaches will have a full year to "Pump You Up", this year we are slow footed and not strong enough, we will prolly be handing it off too a posse of RB's, but that's OK, and then takes shots down the field when possible.
This will all be forgotten in 2 years, when PU WILL Win the B1G West and play in a BIG Bowl Game, and the Winning ways will be the Norm.
No losing faith my friends, it is gonna happen!!

The one positive about the OL was I am not sure there were any holding penalties. Also consider the defense Holt runs brings a ton of pressure and that caused problems for an inexperienced line. It is hard to block by kids still learning the scheme. You really see all the recruiting neglect and misses by the previous administration, especially when you have scholarship kids beat out by walk-ons.

That is a bit ambitious for 2 years. In 2 years 6-6 would be awesome

You really don't want Patterson after his sexual assault. I don't care if the guy was the next Orlando Pace...get pieces of shit like that away from my university.

Definitely a giant POS. Can be proud that Purdue did the right thing and sent this and 2 other kids packing after the investigation.

No Baylor BS here! Gotta applaud everybody for handling this well. We didn't act too harshly too quickly. Took our time, gathered facts then acted and did the right thing.

Patterson wasn't part of the sexual assault! He was the one who punch his roommate and broke his jaw.

A touch of the QB was a sack. You are not going to sack any of our QBs by just getting a hand on them.

During the second half I was talking to some former players, so I was only half watching. I do not believe Blough or Sindelar played in the second half. If they did it was only a couple of plays.

In general, I don't think it's too hard to be optimistic, at least to a point. I mean, it can hardly get that much worse than the last three years. Any improvement will be a welcome sign of positive change.

My biggest hope on offense is that the new staff and Blough improve efficiency. Offensive production actually improved each of the past two seasons after taking a nose dive in Haze's first year. But the offense still hurt itself with turnovers last year. I'm also really curious to see how the revamped receiving corps works. Have no idea what to expect out of the line.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the linebackers play as a unit on defense.

Definitely a little of both. I think we have some spots to be confident in, LB,RB,TE,QB. Then some that just aren't very good in OL, WR. The biggest difference to me compared to the past 4 years is these coaches will put guys in positions to succeed. Our last staff didn't cater to the few strengths we had, I think this staff understands the current situation and will do everything they can to mask them in year one.

It's no secret that we don't have depth, and you need quality depth in the B10. Can that develop, sure but not sure that it will right away. We are heading in the right direction and that's where I find optimism. This staff gets it, they don't sugarcoat anything, and they have a plan to fix it. Will it translate to wins in year one, I doubt it, but then again we were surprised in Tillers first year, big difference is I think 6-7 wins this coming year would be a huge surprise.

One another note for those who've watched how impressive was Danny E closing about 10 yards to run Anthrop down from behind, he blew by some DB's on the play as well. Guy has insane athleticism.

Wow! It does make one wonder WTF Hazz was doing in his brief stint here.........it sure as hell wasn't recruiting! I have complete confidence is this staff.............but the O-Line and Receivers......looked god awful at times.......we are going to have to really out scheme our opponents this year to dig out a few wins!

I have great respect for Brohm and staff but the reality is that it will take them 2-3 years minimum to dig us out of this train wreck, and that's based upon an optimistic assumption that they are indeed capable of resurrecting the current mess.

The Brohm staff will not be capable of transforming our MAC-caliber athletes into B1G athletes. I'm not trying to be insulting but please get it into your heads: This will be a long, slow recovery and that's based upon the optimistic assumption that there will be a recovery.

I think we might surprise some folks this year. We have B1G talent at QB, RB, LB, DB, and pockets of it elsewhere (I think our DL could be a pleasant surprise). It's really just the OL. I suspect the three WRs coming in will all see the field more than anyone we saw on Saturday except for possibly Phillips. This is the best coaching staff we've had in over 10 years. Let's see what they can do. But my over/under is 4 and I'm optimistic if we stay healthy and coach these kids up, we could beat it.

Translation: BoilerBulldog agrees with me that the OL is a showstopper.

Totally realistic that three wins will be the most that will happen. I don't believe the hype some have spewed about Brohm. B10 is a whole lot tougher than where he was before.

I'd put Conference USA slightly ahead of the WAC where Tiller came from in 95. Not saying he is the next Tiller and Tiller has a longer track record...but it is hard to argue what he did at WKU as an OC and as a HC can't translate simply because he came from the Comference USA. With that argument, Bohl and Tressel shouldn't have been successful because it is totally worlds part from D2 to D1.

I am looking at everything with Brohm and his staff and what I see is a staff that has clearly identified where the program is (probably a lot worse than they expected) and are targeting needs that can help immediately. From my perspective, Brohm was able to shore up the thin LB (McCollum), DB's (Jallow and a number of other players), and WR (massive influx of talent that may in fact usurp every player outside of Phillips during fall camp). He has also identified where players can be better suited to not only help the team but where they are better suited themselves (Rob Simmons move and the package/splitting out of Sparks).

My biggest takeaway is that this staff just isn't afraid of truly holding guys accountable finally. If you were there Saturday, you would agree that you saw more ass chewings because of stupid mistakes than you ever saw from Hazel in four years.

I hate to say this and ruin my reputation.

But we have 3 WR's that we were all saying 2 months ago could be immediate starters when we signed them who did not play. I expect at least 2 of them to surprise and emerge as key contributors. and maybe one of those TEs will emerge.

and we all know the Cronk saga. We have three incoming offensive linemen who already have the size to play and to start. I have to believe one and maybe two of them will be able to step in, and maybe not start, but be able to provide quality depth once they arrive.

I'm saying they will emerge. That might take 4-5 games. and I said key contributors, not starters.

and somehow, Brohm just offered a 300 pound juco defensive lineman a scholarship. Maybe he can pull another scholarship out of his hat for a juco offensive lineman.

I believe the key to Brohm's offense is being able to provide pass protection and giving Bough time to throw. If we can get a passing game going, our running game should be adequate. I like our defense - especially if we're able to add that 300 lb juco lineman.

and I want to make this point clear, I don't like the 300 lb juco lineman just because he's a juco and ready to contribute immediately . I don't like him just because he's over 300 lbs. I like him because our defensive coord was once the def coord at USC, and I believe he has an eye for talent. I really like our defense.

I'm going out on a limb and saying we win 5 games. Ohio, Illinois, IU, Rutgers, and an upset over Minn or Northwestern.

now back to my reputation. Will I become happy and positive if we win 5 games? No. I'll still whine, complain and be miserable. But I believe if the ball bounces right, we could get lucky and win 5 games.

Wouldn't put too much into the spring game. Remember most of it was second and third string players and that's without several players that aren't here yet.

I choose to be optimistic about this because I have no control over it so there's little use to worry about it anyway.

on recruiting signing day, I voiced my opinion, and said I'd voice it again after the spring game, the summer camp, and Fall practice. Even though our offense sucked, I've become more optimistic than previously stated. And what makes me more optimistic is the way our defense has adapted to a new scheme. And that unlike Hazell, Brohm is not standing pat, and is still trying to bring in players to win NOW, rather than some 5 year rebuilding plan. I don't believe our team talent was as bad as their record. displayed the last 3 years.

Brohm will do fine, saying that he won't due to the Big Ten being a tougher conference is like saying a good golfer won't shoot a good score on a tougher golf course. Give the guy time , I really think the guy knows what he is doing.
