Ohio State at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Give Ohio State credit they pressured Smith to the point where he started forcing up shots and took him out of his game.
Ohio State just used the blueprint on how to beat Purdue...pressure pressure pressure.
This offence does not handle pressure on the ball in half court situations.

Usually 2 ways to beat Purdue....
1. Pressure Smith.
2. Hold down our shooting.

They did just ok, on both above, enough to get the win, because mainly our D disappeared in H2. Playing D where we allow a 45 pt half will get you beat alot. Lol

Yeah, Tex after we got back to a 6 point lead and had the ball I thought we were ok. Very disappointing loss for sure.
Yes, that was the point of the game I felt was lost it. As you say, coming back and getting the 6 point lead with momentum was great. Unfortunately we missed 3 fairly easy shots in a row at the rim, 2 by TKR, 1 by BS and 1 blocked of CF. As good as Purdue was in making those shots most of the game, missing those at that stage were critical, imho.

I wasn't able to watch the game (thankfully as it turns out) and only streamed a gamecast and in the second half there was a TON of "Purdue missed (insert shot attempt here)" ... where O$U couldn't miss it seemed.... and it seemed like EVERYONE was missing... defense aside (which appears to have been bad) .. you aren't going to win if you don't score.

Ironically, I think this takes some pressure off as I don't see us finishing higher than second in the B1G and MAYBE a S16 run... MAYBE.... but that has been my expectations for the initial post-Zach/FF season anyway.. anything else was gravy.

It's one game with a lot left and a lot is going to happen that is unexpected.. but this is also a learning experience for the frosh.. if a team gets hot and you get cold, no lead is safe... so you can't get complacent and think you can just cruise. And it doesn't happen to just us either...

At least one if not both TKR shots were forced and one where I believe Harris was wide open on the perimeter after having the hot hand. Just thought there was some poor decision making in that stretch that could've went a long way to sealing the game.

Oh there's plenty in the film session for Painter, and you don't even need to take a hard look at it for instruction. You'd rather that not come after a loss (especially at home), but it's all about how you deal with adversity now.....win as a team, lose as a team - players and coaches alike.

We'll see what happens Friday because that's another set of challenges in that match-up.

if we make 5 or 6 bunnies, game would have been a W

Time to review D again.
Play like that on D again, and another L.
45 pt half. LOL, I can hear CMP now, melting down the gym.

It was his fault. Mr. I know basketball can yell at himself. Allowed Parrish highest point total of his 5 year career. News flash, when we get up by 16, they are just gonna shoot 3s!!! I know basketball! lol

Perhaps, Buck - but I think the system works.....defense was pretty good in first half. I'll just throw this out there for further "discussion" (that usually means argument, haha)......don't forget about mental fatigue - leads to breakdowns, poor reactions, poor shot selection, misses, etc. Every team has to deal with it, and we've seen some of these players in the past seasons have to deal with it.

Still a good team with potential to be very good - gotta figure out the consistent plan to close out opponents. On the bright side, I'm liking little things I see of Gicarri Harris.....no surprise.....still a frosh, but he's not going to get bullied and neither is Cox, though they still have a ways to go.

I also surmise this puts a little bit of a bur under Braden Smith......let's see how he responds.

Definitely fair, IMHO, that Painter gets some of the criticism - not his finest hour last night. Win as a team, lose as a team. It's a long season - hopefully, they don't have too many more (or ideally no more) of the roller coaster performances.

also, hit 11 3 pointers. our 3 point defense was awful

Purdue missed at least 4 shots right at the rim down the stretch. Make 2 and they win.

Also missed 4 free throws (including 2 front ends of 1-and-1s). Make those and they win.

Smith has to hit the rim on the intentional miss to at least give them a chance to get the rebound.

The loss sucks, but not time to panic just yet. However, lots of teachable moments and things to practice the next few days. Bottom line, EVERYBODY has to step up their game.

Blue print to beating us always has been shut off the 3 and let 1 guy score. Difference is we won with Edey last year doing that but Renn is not Edey

Easier said than done 😂
He was trying to go quick to catch OSU off guard.

If he had hit two more regular shots or we don’t allow Thornton to hit a wide open 3 at the end of the first half, things could have been different. Also, had he not picked up a silly 2nd foul, we may have been able to extend the lead even more in first half…him and TKR were gettin WHATEVER they wanted on the PnR.

I mean that is the blueprint to beat pretty much every team.

my point was we quit running the offense that has been a staple since the Dakota days. We get into the dump the ball down and stand around , and Renn will not pass the ball back out

This offseason Purdue needs to bring in 1-2 portal kids, guessing a player or probably 2-3 leave out, even if they don’t Coach needs a big and maybe a back up PG for depth. This season has sort of been the Big 3 and occasionally a player or two stepping up, need more than that. Colvin and Heide have been disappointing so far this season.

Colvin and Heide have been disappointing this year because Painter doesn’t allow them the freedom to make plays . He is so consumed with Smith and Renn playing their 2 man game they forget about the rest. Saw it at the end of the game last night, it was so predictable Smith with his pocket pass to Renn. It’s the only thing he does. So before getting all over Colvin and Heide let’s look at Painter and his plays

Plays need to be run for all players on the court…not just 3!!! It’s a team game for everyone on the court. It’s bad coaching not to do so.

We ran an offense that took us to Natl Champ game. We are getting good shots for our best 2 players. That is what every team wants. You don’t scheme so your 4th or 5th best players to get shots.

They literally are on the court to make plays.. not doing it while you are on the court isn't the same thing.
cant make plays if you never touch the ball. smith needs to include everyone and not just tkr and loyer

The other players had 12 shots, but you would rather have Furst shooting than TKR or rather Colvin shooting than Loyer. I don’t understand that. We are not a socialist team.

While I don’t disagree. It’d be good to see more action with ALL players and not just the big 3 in CASE one of them is off.

When Colvin and Heide get the ball. Myles looks immediately to the next step in the set and not even at the basket and even just dribble to put pressure on the defense. Heide has some space to shoot but instead, pump fakes and by the time he pumps, the defender has recovered. No one has bit on the fake all year.

Harris last game put the ball on the floor to put pressure on the defense and cox is similar, if not more aggressive (don’t know if they were told they could be and the other two were told not to or what).

It’s hard for any shooter, especially at this level, to get into the flow of the game if they aren’t getting shots/touching the ball.

I don’t want to speak for everyone, but I’d say in the losses, the frustration is we don’t get anyone else going but the big 3. We aren’t saying Furst should get ISO over TKR or run the PnR with Smith (he is in no way anywhere near the finisher TKR is). What I AM saying is get Myles, Heide, cox and Harris more involved with the action. Set more back screens and flare screens, someone will get open to put pressure on the defense. We run a lot of weave at the top with hand offs and get pushed way out at times. Mostly Branden is handling it and no one else really touches it (yes he is the best player), but if we want to be successful in the tourney we WILL need a 4th scorer to emerge (unless big 3 goes on a heater which would be great but can’t count on).

We know Myles and Cam can be good shooters, so if we can get them going, it makes the team that much better. And same goes for Cox and GiCarri (he is showing good signs of confidence with shooting as of late).
