Offer Bane!

Got some more inside info on Bane: The big question comes on the defensive end with Bane. His high school played an exclusive 2-3 zone where Bane, at 6'5ish, played the middle. He hasn't played much, if any, man to man defense which could be the reasoning behind the lack of offers. On top of his lack of man to man defense, he is going to have to defend on the wing and many coaches may feel that is too much to work on given other players they are currently recruiting. His school beat a number of 4A schools this season, including Richmond, so I honestly think this is a guy who just doesn't have the spotlight as much as other players. If he is playing up in Fort Wayne or in Indy, he probably gets more publicity.

He can develop as a man-to-man defender. I don't like Purdue playing man-to-man exclusively, but they have done a good job developing guys like E'Twaun Moore and Rapheal Davis in their man-to-man D. I would think this would be similar to developing Davis' man D on the defensive end. Maybe they have more established prospects lined-up right now, who knows?

Good insight and probably spot-on for at least part of the reasons he's not getting offers. Northwestern and Purdue are on him, and not taking the leap, yet. As another poster says, why can't we trust the people who get paid to discern talent? And that is NOT all on Painter. There are people who scout for a living. Their reputations are on the line if they recommend a kid to a coach and the kid isn't what the scout says they are. That may be how he got the New Orleans offer ... unless New Orleans has some pipeline to Indiana. I would almost bet they never watched him play in Indiana. If Butler and Xavier and Dayton aren't offering, well ....

Not playing on a major AAU team (he doesn't, right?) is another "strike" both in the fact that he isn't seen in las Vegas or Orlando, and that he may not play the competition. Or, he may play man to man in AAU and some people have seen him and seen too much of a project. With the class that may be coming to several people in '17, redshirting him may not be attractive either. Just bad timing,

We ALL KNOW that regardless of how great one is offensively, one will not play if one cannot play D ... and that is true at FAR more schools than just PU.

And at this point for me, these are all guesses. I may try to talk with someone who knows this week.

Just some FYI, there was a kid at a small school many years ago who played on the AAU team my son was on. He was a point guard and really, really good. When my son started getting D1 offers, I called his Dad to see who was offering him. I was sure they would be equal to or better than those offering my son. Nope. ZERO D1 offers. I was shocked. At that time I had not spent much time with coaches and scouts. He never did get any offers and ended up playing at St. Joe's.

His HS team lost in the final semi-state game that year and he hit 1,100 points for his career as a 4-year starter. Not too bad for a point guard. He went on to play DIII at that time. And honestly, never set the world on fire there.

Now, I would see why, but then, he looked darn good to me. It's the little things that the experts see ....

Good commentary and insight in both posts. Let us know what you find out! I'll try to see what I can dig up as well!

On offense, Bane had the ball probably 80 to 90% of the time, rarely did you see him come out of the game, guy was probably a little tired, so I think they put him underneath to help give him a little rest. I would think he could play defense, he isn't slow at all.

Flag, did you get a chance to see him live?

For those who have seen both play, does Bane remind you of DeJuan Marrero out of Gary a few years back? He was an undersized forward who was a beast with his hustle and hard work.

I'd say no because Bane is definitely not undersized. He would be a 2/3 at the college level and at 6'5 and 215-225, I would say that isn't undersized at all for a wing player. That would put him at the same size at Davis his senior year.

Thanks. I think that people hoped that Marrero would develop into a 2/3, but I don't know if it ever happened.

Has Purdue offered yet? I was asking some folks about Bane while up in Richmond for the semistate and their impression was no offer on the table but they were encouraging him to hold off on signing anywhere else. Reading between the lines, it sounded like the Purdue staff was waiting to see if anyone turned pro or transferred and he would be offered the first schollie that became available.

I hope that isn't the case.... not that he isn't offered, rather that Purdue is waiting for a scholarship to open up first. For crying out loud, how many scholarships does this team need to hoard?! When you have this many available, you offer guys that can help. Whether Purdue has 3, 4, or 5, scholarships open at the moment should really be pretty low on the list of criteria for this particular offer.

I remember that Marrero kid being on our radar. Didn't he go to DePaul? I think he blew his knee out and hasn't been heard from since.

I think Bane should be on the all star team, when I saw him play , even though it was against less competition, the guys guarding him were the best athletes on their teams, and there was no way they could stop him, hope the guy becomes a Boilermaker and does well

Trying not to read too much in to this, but sure makes it sound like he is ours to lose.
Here's a fun question. If we don't offer Bane and he blows up the mid majors and decides to transfer; do you guys think he likes us as a school or not? Its a hard answer for me since we would of passed on him but I'd say yes he would like us as a potential landing spot.

He is ours to lose, you are 100% correct.

If we offered him at 11:45:00, he'd accept at 11:45:02. 2 seconds. That's a fact.

But the question is, why hasn't anyone else offered him?? No one more high-profile than Ball State or Ohio U.?? Of course he would accept a PU offer over those lower schools, but he would probably also accept NW or Cincy or Xavier too.

I do know he would love to play for PUR, more so than those others I just listed. And I know we, Xavier, and NW will be watching his AAU team in Texas this weekend. I'll update if I hear of others.

edit; Confirmed; PUR, XAV, and NW are the three schools that will be watching him this weekend. No others.

It could be Desmond has let other programs know he isn't interested or other programs may not have room for him right now. There are a multitude of reasons...including coaches going after higher priority players than Bane right now. He just happens to be more if a priority for other programs.

Actually I happened to see him playing in the CBI championship series this year. Played for Morehead State and seemed to be their best player although he was a very poor free throw shooter. He'd have been in the rotation at Purdue this year.

I read that Bane is making his decision this Saturday and that he will visit Purdue this Thursday. With the coaching staff reaching out and getting interest from transfers the level of a Ray Kasongo (Tennessee reserve that barely played) or a Kellon Thomas (former Kent State PG under 6', average college player), why not go ahead and offer Bane NOW?
