O’Connell NFL?

It would be wise of him to test the waters if the opportunity came, see what he needs to work in and come back for one more year
But if he comes back, a few QB’s transfer for sure
I could be wrong, but I dont think it works like that for football (compared to the NBA). Im not sure why. I've never heard of anyone returning to school after they've entered their name in the NFL draft.

I think Aidan will be a great backup QB like that Ivy Leaguer who was the Cowboys backup for years and is now the Giants OC. Aidan is smart and his fellow players like him. His INTs this year were higher because he had to force balls and a few went off of receivers' hands.

If Aidan returns, IMO Plummer will transfer out. IMO he is a better QB on a team like Iowa or Wisconsin that relies mainly on the run. Aidan is better for Purdue.

He certainly has the talent to read defenses…and quickly get the ball out. Something that’s lost on even some top picks out there.
I think he gets a shot and is on a practice squad somewhere. Like Brady…you don’t have to be mobile….just have elite pocket presence and get rid of the ball before you get into trouble

Ask yourself this.. who is a better QB when you account for mental processing and getting the ball out quickly based on feel… Oconnell or jamarcus Russell? Or Heath shuler or a million other busts I can think of

Take a lot more than that to make it in the league. I think if he continues to be successful this year he probably leaves for pro football. 6-6 finish or worse he might come back.
I’ve said all along I think he’s the best QB on the team and has the skill set to negate SOME of the OL deficiencies. Not a lot of guys even at the college level have to or even have the ability to go through their progressions like him.
If we play Minny in good weather I feel we win that game. No run game really hampers us.

I’m not talking about him being a pro bowler… just a David Blough type. Whether you agree or not I think you might like the theory that of all the Purdue QBs post 96, O’Connells closest comp is blough

Watch someone ruin my day and say Caleb terbush lol

David Blough is quite an athlete. Blough has a an average NFL arm but is a legit back up.

AOC does a good job of anticipating throws and has a good arm for college, but I’m not sure about an NFL arm. He’s smart and moves well in the pocket.

O'Connell will get a shot like Blough if he keeps this level of play up.

This probably deserves another thread, but what is more likely? O'Connell plays in the NFL or Bell wins the Heisman? This is the weakest Heisman list I can remember recently. IF Purdue gets on a role and IF Bell maintains what he's done his whole career with a couple games like Saturday sprinkled in am I crazy to even bring that up? Two BIG IFs I know. Both are long odds (Heisman nearly impossible as it will go to QB of 'BAMA, OK, etc, Rinse, Repeat) but this is why we are fans and what makes message boards fun.

Aidan getting a shot in NFL is way more likely. Like by a factor of 10. Purdue would have to win out for Bell to even have a chance at the Heisman.

I know.....but when looking at the Heisman candidates the thought popped in my mind. Not likely at all, but it seems like the performance Bell had last week finally put him on the map nationally.

Oconnell plays in the NFL …

here’s my thing though.. it’s 2021. I’m not on Twitter and never will be.. but if bell has a big day today and we win, can’t Purdue people harass anyone posting anything about the heisman on Twitter about how there’s no credibility for the award if bell isn’t in New York ??

Another 2 interceptions. The guy belongs on the bench. We will never be a winning team as long as we play shitty QB’s. Anyone who thinks he is the answer has never played football in his life.

I am starting to think he has a shot. We will not see a better secondary than we saw today and he was up to the challenge. What do you all think?

I think today's performance answers the question to this thread.

So one bad performance does that? So when Brees only completed 20 of 49 passes against Michigan and lost 38-12, was he not going pro either. O’Connell and well our whole offense really had a bad game. Credit to Wisconsin’s defense. They played well. Hopefully we regroup and bounce back next week.

Boiler up!

I absolutely hope we regroup and win next week. I agree with that. I think we can get to a bowl game this year, so that would be step in the right direction.

It has nothing to do with one game. People cannot honestly think that AOC has a chance to be a NFL QB. I guess these are the same people that thought Caleb TerBush should have made it too?

Am I the only one that thinks that it is crazy that we have a former walk on as a starting QB for the "Cradle of QBs"?

The biggest flaw that Brohm has made over the last 5 years has not being able to get a top recruit at QB to come to Purdue. I think that has finally turned a corner with Allen and the kids from 2023, and I really hope Allen takes over the starting role next year. With his offense, Brian and him playing in the NFL, top WRs to throw to (that is going to take a big hit next year with Bell leaving), etc. you would think that he would have been able to get a top QB prospect to come here sometime over the last 5 years.

I know Alaimo was a 4 star in some recruiting sites, but we have not seen whether he justifies that ranking or not. Besides QB, Brohm has whiffed on RBs too. Horvath is absolutely the best RB that we have on the roster, but again he is a walk on too.

AOC and Horvath are great stories. However, if we want to go to the "next level", we need the Bells, Moores, and Karlaftis's type of recruits at QB, WR, RB and OL to get to that level,, because we had the excitement of Basketball on Grass 2.0 for one season, 2018, due to Rondale. This offense has been stagnant since 2018, and the offensive genius title is starting to fade a little. Is it the coach, personnel or both? Don't know. It looks to be a little bit of both to me.

Off my soapbox now.

You can't be serious with that reference to Brees. O'Connell can't carry Drew's water.

You can’t seriously be so stupid as to dismiss the point I am making because I used Brees as the example. Would you prefer I use a lesser qb to point out they can have bad games?!?!

My point was even all time great qbs have really bad games and just because O’Connell has a bad game does not mean he sucks. Our whole offense looked bad yesterday. Credit to Wisconsin. O’Connell is absolutely not Brees. But imo he is in the upper half of the Big Ten as far as qbs go and is not why we didn’t compete offensively yesterday. He did have a bad game…. As did the rest of our offense.

Being in the upper half of QBs in the B1G this year doesn't mean squat. The QB play in the conference has been putrid with few exceptions. And, O' Connell is not one of those exceptions.

For me it means that this is some grotesque failure by the coaching staff as many here believe. And I am ok with O’Connell’s play being putrid in your opinion as that seems to encompass 75% of all qbs in college football.

Still a firm no. But yesterday was the formula to get the most out of him. Mostly safe short stuff, occasional deeper shot to keep the D honest, eat it or throw it away when you have to.

Lol Nebraska takes the deep stuff away and keeps it in front of them. When a team doesn’t, like Iowa, he has the arm to go get big yards. This idea that he’s this dink and dunk QB is beyond stupid. Bell ran a skinny post yesterday and Oconnell fired a dagger before he cut that hit him right in the three.

Oconnell plays with the 128th ranked rushing attack in the nation that is dead last in division 1-A in yards per carry

Never said his arm was a problem. It's his processing speed and decision making. And his immobility combined with inconsistent line play means things have to happen more quickly.

Lol he has excellent process speed and decision making. That was on display against Iowa and yesterday.

he is playing without a rushing offense against some really good defenses.

talent is even in the nfl .. If you wanted to see how Oconnell would fare as an NFL QB vs Wisconsin youd want to give him Kelly butler, Brandon gorin and kory sheets and then start analyzing his decision making
