I cannot recall ever witnessing an athletic director booed at games/events. It is really odd.

This is the quote that got me rolling:

"Mike and Mitch and I believe Darrell Hazell deserves this swing at the plate and we think he’ll demonstrate the work he’s put in with his staff over the last three years will pay dividends," Burke said.

What are we down to now, like 2 or 3 position coaches from Hazell's original staff? Maybe the water boy??

Freeman and Parker are the only two of the originals that i recall.

"Mike and Mitch and I believe Darrell Hazell deserves this swing at the plate..."

Put me in mind of the start and finish of a Boilermaker football version of "Casey at the Bat"

The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Boiler 'leven that day;
The score stood thirty-one to nothing with but one quarter to play.
And when Morgan oddly stood and yelled "Remember the Name!"
A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game...

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The AAMB is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere Hoosiers are laughing, and somewhere Harbaugh will shout;
But there is no joy in Boilerville— mighty Darrell has struck out.

Never mind he has swung and missed 30 out of 36 times already...he does not deserve anything at this point...and your point is very valid as well, as it is almost entirely a new staff this year from what he assembled upon accepting the job.

As I said a the time of his big announcement...it was all about HIM (and his ego)...there was no need for the announcement...there was nothing to announce...his contract was extended previously so as to expire in July 2017 so as to coincide with his being 65 and not able to continue...and while you found the quote above as the one that got you rolling, the one that got me was where he does not just act as if this was some noble gesture on his part, but acts like this was some genius plan on his part in that he had to tell Mitch and Mike that they should probably start looking at beginning the process to find his replacement.

If that course of action was not already underway, then the situation is dire and worse than anyone even knew...and I personally find it really difficult to believe that Mike and Mitch were sitting around twiddling their thumbs and then Morgan came to them and said, "Hey guys...just wanted to give you a heads up that I won't be the AD after July 2017 and you might want to begin thinking about finding my successor."

Why did there even have to be a press conference yesterday on the matter? There was nothing informative provided...there was nothing enlightening provided...and Morgan even acted as if he was doing those in attendance a favor by gracing them with his presence, never mind his precious time.

Count me clearly among the fragment that definitely does not want him engaged.

Yes, yes, yes. It is clear to me the press conference was just another attempt at framing his legacy how he sees fit, reminding everyone of his accomplishments and casting his failures on others- lack of fan support, greed at peer schools, the NCAA, the NFL, lawyers, you name it. And his "aw shucks" approach still fools a lot of people.
It is disappointing he can get away with these cheap tricks with the small time media that cover Purdue closely. He would be eaten alive in a major market.

He just wanted to be seen out of his office somewhere and not hear insults hurled at him.

I am guessing whatever donors are left are really starting to make some noise - and the response is to announce Morg's "retirement" 18 months in advance to stem the bleeding of dollars.
Can't really see any other reason.

It was already announced...it was announced when they last extended his contract two years ago or whenever it was formally done...it is well-known and has been that he would be moving on after July 2017...it is true that there has been a reduction in donations and that JPC membership has steadily declined, but, if the idea was to address that with the public announcement of something that was known and already happening, then no big surprise, but they missed yet again.

If Morgan had a conscience and the best interests of Purdue athletics at heart, he would have announced following the football season that he would be retiring early or moving to a new role in July 2016...the latter may ultimately happen, and that is more of what Wednesday's lame follow-up "press conference" was about, but if it does, he went out of his way to make it look like it was some noble action on his own part when it obviously was nothing of the sort.

I'm as ready as anyone for a new AD, but I think people are overreacting to this press conference (often as many on this board do). Morgan said he's open to any options and that he will do whatever is best for Purdue. Some of his decisions have been questionable, but he's always done what he believes is best for the school. It takes a long time to find an AD- look at all the other schools still searching for one. I took from his statements that he will do whatever is asked weather it be help out or stay away from it. It doesn't benefit anyone to dissect word-for-word a press conference, whether it be Morgan or Matt or DH speaking.

Why give 30 minutes of long winded answers if you don't expect people to actually listen and interpret what you're saying? Why even have a press conference? The story was already put out there last week that he (shocker!) was retiring on schedule. I'd give the guy a break for an honest slip of the tongue, but if you listen carefully there is some thoughtfully crafted messaging and manipulation going on in this conference, just as there was on his BTN appearance when he announced the return of DH.

Here are just a few of these not-too-subtle messages:
(1) Fans are too concerned with winning at all costs - our frustrations and waning support for a team with a 6-30 record reflect our misaligned priorities, not his failures as an AD or DH failures as a coach.
(2) DH is a good coach who has not had enough time or been given a fair shake
(3) Purdue is a small market fish in a big pond and we should be happy just to participate as long as we are doing things the 'right way'
(4) The president and BoT are ultimately influential on the status of athletics in the university and the determining the role of the AD (I happen to agree here)
(5) No one is allowed to make ANY judgments unless they have been in his exact position (this is a personal pet peeve of mine - depending on how it's applied you could say that no one can critique anyone - everyone gets infinite free passes!)
(6) He is essentially a misunderstood genius, a man ahead of his time. Even when it comes to replacing him, his boss is in need of his help. There is an ignorant 'fragment' of the fan base that doesn't want him involved in another coaching hire, but he will oblige if that's what Mitch and BoT want.

For many of us accountability for the sake of accountability is a worthy cause. Lessons learned from the current AD are going to have a long lasting impact on the football program, particularly since he is going to be involved in the transition process and passing down his knowledge. It's important to get an accurate picture of things. Plus there isn't exactly much else to talk about right now on the football board!

To deem what took place on Wednesday an actual "press conference" would be more than a stretch.

Never mind...there was absolutely no need for it at all...as FirstDownB alluded to, and what I had said in my original post in this thread on the matter...it had nothing to do with Purdue and Purdue athletics, it was all about Morgan...it was an opportunity (as FirstDownB covered) to show the genius that he is...to take a subtle shot (or a couple) at "fans"...it had nothing to do with genuinely doing whatever is best for Purdue athletics...again, if that were his concern, he would have announced that he was retiring early or moving to a new position in 2016, rather than issuing some huge public announcement and then following it up with a "press conference" to share that he was planning on hanging around and collecting his substantial paycheck (and ridiculous retention bonus) until his contract expires. I believe he made reference in November (or early December) that he would dictate when he left...a bold and egotistical statement, but the truth of the matter apparently unfortunately.

He was already informed that he would not be hiring the next football coach...thus why Hazell is still the football coach...knowing that he would not be involved in that process and knowing that a change may take place this year, THAT is why the process of finding his successor has already begun and it is why he may end up with a lesser role or new title position...it has nothing at all to do with any action or decision on his part, never mind any noble one as he wishes everyone to believe (and some seemingly unfortunately do).

If Burke stepped down right now, we would have an interim AD-most likely Cross. I'm not sure how that benefits the department anymore than him sitting there right now. He's not going to do anything major just as an interim AD wouldn't either. I agree, really not sure what the point of the Q&A was.

We've known since the contract was signed that DH wasn't going anywhere until after this upcoming season. Regardless of if people like it or not, we are a small fish in a big pond. Facts are facts and we operate with one of the smallest athletic budgets in a major conference and cannot afford a 6MM buy out unless someone on this board is willing to donate it.

The next AD will have to be persuasive and get more money from the BOT, but we still wont be spending it like OSU, Michigan, and PSU. That's fine and we can be successful as long as we invest first in the major sports and make the right hires.

All Fragments who want Burkle Engaged in the football program signify by saying "I"........Those Fragments that are opposed...............???

As Fans of Purdue Athletics, don't you just love being reduced down to that of a "Fragment"............If each "Fragment" population makes up 5% than I guess the remaining 90% of the Purdue populous really does not give a Damn anymore and that is shame if not complete derelict of responsibility on Burke`s part......
