Looks like another good year for volleyball. Two top ten wins in the non conference. I wonder how they'll do in the conference.

I wonder how long it will be before someone around here rips the volleyball program for being, you know, nationally competitive.

The program has been a great story for as long as Dave Shondell has been here. I wish we had more like it at Purdue.

I suppose, though, if MB2 would just have the balls to drain the entire volleyball budget into football then all our problems would be solved.

I was drawing parallels between Shondell and Painter a week or so ago because every Purdue fan I know thinks Shondell is a great coach (as do I) but some of the very same people rip Painter.

Shondell took over a program in the dumps, as did Painter.
Shondell turned the program around, as did Painter.
Shondell has missed the tournament in the past few years, as has Painter.
Shondell has not yet been to the Final Four, neither has Painter.

Call me crazy but I think both are great and I think both will get there.

At any rate, I wish I lived closer to West Lafayette because I'd have volleyball season tickets. I saw them play Nebraska a few years back at the Mackey rededication weekend and it was great. Last year I saw them play Notre Dame in Mackey and again it was a good show.

Good comparisons.
I am far more a like than a hate painter fan, but I fall into the frustration crowd sometimes - primarily because i think men's bball is the best chance for Purdue to achieve that elite status of the major sports.
That skews my expectations and reasoning

Don't forget that you can literally be ranked in the top 20 nationally but be 8th in the conference standings. The B1G has the best volleyball conference in the country with 8 teams in the top 25 (the top 3 spots go to B1G teams). Purdue is currently #10.

True. Makes it all the better because the conference season has so many big matches.

Shondell certainly has the edge over Painter in postseason success, with an 18-9 record, 7 Sweet Sixteen appearances, and 2 Elite Eights.

That said, the two programs really occupy different places within Purdue athletics. Volleyball is a solid complement sport, but it's not a headlining program. Fans can be very happy with what Shondell has done. Had Painter put up the same post-season numbers, on the other hand, it would probably just increase criticism that he hasn't made the final four. Expectations are different.

I like Painter, but he appears to be about at his glass ceiling until he can engineer a major breakthrough in the NCAA tournament.

Way to go out on the ledge there.

"He's done the best he can do unless he does more" is essentially what you're saying.

I think you're twisting my comment, TC4THREE. I didn't say that Painter has done the best that he can do. I'm not in a position to say what the best he can do is. I hope we haven't seen it yet.

I do think he's reached a glass ceiling in his career (wins, national perception, recruiting) that can only be broken by making a deep run or two in the NCAA tournament.

For that matter, maybe Shondell has reached a plateau as well. But nobody's going to get too upset about a volleyball team that never makes the Final Four, especially if it routinely churns out Sweet 16 appearances and the occasional Elite Eight.

Point taken. Thanks for clarifying.

similar to the wrestling team.

Come on . Really? Sometime this whole thing just gets away from us?

They lost last night to unranked Illinois at home. They looked terrible...certainly not a top 10 team. So much for TV exposure as they will be on again in April 10, 2017, at 10:30 pm. Nothing like losing before thousands of watchers!

If Painter loses at home to an unranked team when we are top ten next year there will be calls for his head on these boards.

Or if the opposite happens,
We will have others just trying to encite and bait that same vocal minority,
Rather than fully enjoying the win
