Non-Conference Schedule finalized....

That is one of the reasons why we can't sign 5 star players. Instead of playing a top ranked team on a aircraft carrier, in front of the President on national TV, we are on the the jive B1G Network.

It's a Monday. CBS won't carry a Monday night game. And ESPN/ESPN2 won't carry because of Monday Night Football.

There's 3 other ESPN channels it could air on (not including ESPN360) if there's a Monday Night Football game is on the main channel. I agree with the questioning of why it couldn't be on at least one of those. They don't think people would tune in to ESPN2 to see the defending national champs and preseason top 5 team play another preseason top 25-caliber team at their place? I don't buy that.

Probably just a coincidence (and for the reasons already posted concerning Monday Night), but ESPN and the BIG 10 conference are not the best of buddies these days. They do business together because they have to, but IMO, ESPN doesn't shy away from sticking it to Delany at any convenient opportunity.

Ok, I'll take a different approach: Why is this game being played on a Monday night?

Exactly what I was thinking. Why even compete with MNF? Every sports bar in the country will have MNF on 90% of the TVs with sound.
Poor job of marketing by the athletic dept and basketball ops people. They're not getting their public relations money's worth for a very high profile game.

Perhaps there was no other choice....it would be interesting to learn what flexibility they had with the date of this game and what the 'Nova people think.

I would assume the Nova people got this one circled on their schedule. Top 10 team, on the road in a Power 5 conference and with Mackey having the rep as a tough place to play.

Nova has GREAT guards. It will be a huge challenge for Purdue's backcourt.

This sounds bad, but I don't know much about the Nova guards. Do you want them shooting 3's or do you want them trying to penetrate?
Would this be a good game to use some zone? Box n 1 with Haas in the middle?

Maybe so, but this is squarely on ESPN's shoulders and / or possibly the Gavitt Games rules. It's possible all the home Big Ten games are on BTN and the home Big East games are on FS1.

Usually, ESPN and / or CBS gets first pick on games they want for the entire season. SO, they didn't pick it up (if that was even allowed). Has ZERO to do with Purdue, Nova, the Big Ten and Big East.

OK. When would you play it? Tuesday night is the Champions Classic (you know ESPN isn't putting it on ESPN2 to rival that, and they probably have a MAC football game -- which they do: http://www.espn.com/college-football/schedule/_/week/12), so still on BTN if you move to Tuesday.

PLUS, might be the only night Nova can play. They may have a game on Thursday and Sunday before they head to Atlantis.

It's really not easy to schedule, especially when you have to satisfy so many things.

When would I have played it? Saturday or Sunday. I'll make it even clearer, any day or time that would allow it to be on ESPN or CBS. Biggest non-conference game since....... and we're playing on friggin B1G network.

When was the last time we played a non-con game this big?? Curious what everyone's thoughts are on that.

Ah, basketball talk. To be sure we are on same page, a box and 1 is 4 guys playing zone with one playing man on a perceived dominant scorer. The basic method to defeat it is to run the dominat player through a gauntlet of screens or shift zone to the ball on one side and screen the dominant player free on the other. Easy zone for college level players to defeat.
You may be thinking playing man with 4 and having Haas zone the paint. Otherwise known as man to man with your center not respecting his man outside of 10 feet. Depends on the skills of the opposing center.

Duke in 2009. I had a test that night and couldn't go.

West Virginia would rival that, but that was over xmas break, and no matter how good WVU was, it just still isn't the same as saying "Duke's coming to Mackey"

It's a bit of pick your poison, but Jay Wright is willing to live or die by the three. More often than not it works well for him. Nova will spread you out and then force you to guard them. I don't know about next season, but Wright has no qualms about playing a 4 guard system. Haas and Swanigan will both be tested. Expect Haas to have to prove that he can handle pick and rolls. I would probably switch screens 1-4 and hedge softly with Haas. I wouldn't attempt to take away the threes as much as try to get Nova out of rhythm and try to out score them exploiting Purdue's mismatches on the other end. I think it will be a competitive game, because Purdue presents some match-up problems for Nova, as well.

Agree here......the Duke game was in the ACC challenge (actually it was in December of 2008 I think - 08/09 season).....Duke was in command pretty much the whole game. WVU game was New Year's Day, 2010.....top-10 match-up. Can't think of any better ones off the top of my head without going back pretty far.

Saturday and Sunday, you would get ZERO coverage due to college football and pro football.

CBS carries very few games until February (because of NFL football).
ESPN carries VERY few weekend games until college football is over.

I love how everyone thinks it is that easy to get a network to just carry a game, when there are FOUR major factors in this (Purdue, Nova, Big Ten, Big East).

The Villanova game on BTN is disappointing. Other than that, though, this looks like a very respectable non-conference schedule.

Nova and Louisville are great headliners. Four of the five games vs. P5 opponents are away from Mackey Arena --- so the team will be tested. Utah State has been among the most consistent mid-majors.

I love how you exaggerate. No one said it was easy. What was said is it seems like a game this big in the non-con could be on one of the networks instead of B1G. I also said the game should be played ANY day or time that allows this kind of coverage. Here is link showing TV schedule from last season. Looks like several games managed to get on ESPN platform in early November.

I'm done with my rant, I've run out of steam. We return you to your regular programming.

I gotcha. With the Gavitt Games (at least last year), none of those games were on ESPN networks. They were ALL on BTN and FS1, which I assume is the deal that was made (Big Ten home games on BTN, Big East home games on FS1).

College basketball is largely ignored by the masses until February.
At this point I'm content with any game that isn't ESPN3 or BTN2GO with student announcers.

Actually, you said weekend. Which if you look at November, there was ONE weekend game on ESPN / ESPN2, that weren't part of a tournament (Wisconsin-Oklahoma; Nov. 29).
Actually I said Saturday or Sunday, but added I would play the game any day or time that would allow it to be on CBS or ESPN. There were many games played on the ESPN platform last November on multiple days of the week.

You left out the rest of my quote.

Yep, remember being in MA for that game. Ton of pregame hype and Duke took the crowd out if it in the first 5 minutes and Mackey was never a factor. Every time we made a mini-run, Duke had an answer. Very frustrating game.

4 and a door is what a few Olympic swimmers were playing during free time in Rio.

That "break" didn't last long.....but tomorrow is Friday.

But again. You don't know Nova's schedule.

And the Big Ten & Big East IT APPEARS requires their Gavitt Games home games on BTN & FS1.

Yes. Big east home games on fs1 and big ten home games on btn or ESPN (which would be a no for a Monday). That was the original setup unless something changed with overall recent deals.

The matchups and game days were announced back in may, not sure what the controversy is now.

Nova has GREAT guards. It will be a huge challenge for Purdue's backcourt.

Guards and forwards: they were the champs last season for a reason! Brunson is probably going to improve, Fordham transfer (Eric Paschall) is going to provide another scorer to their rotation and other than Ryan Arcidiacono and center Daniel Ochefu, they return everyone of note (and freshman big Dylan Painter). One player they might be missing is big man frosh Omari Spellman. I don't think he's been academically cleared to play yet. That would lessen their frontcourt, but they still have a strong core returning from the championship team.
