Greg Olson would be an underwhelming choice. I remember Tiller was really pissed when Olson decided to leave Tiller's staff for the NFL after Tiller brought him back to Purdue for a second stint.

Check out Olson's gypsy heritage:

Plus he worked for nothing but crappy teams and organizations. His Purdue gig under Tiller is his Crown Jewel on what otherwise is a swiss cheese resume. .

I preferred Olson over Hazell 4 years ago, but the program has fallen so far that we need more of a turbo boost than Olson can provide. Maybe as OC though.

The days of a guy planting roots and coaching somewhere for heck, even 5 years anymore are long gone. Most of these guys are "gypsies" if you look at them. Unless you get in with an elite organization, the turnover is incredible in the NFL. In all of those situations when he left a job it was not for kicks, but because the head coach was fired.

I of course would like a proven commodity like a Les Miles. I would be intrigued (not as excited) by the flavor of the month like P.J. Fleck. Those seem like easy picks. But what then when those two say no? Sumlin is employed and not an option. The sentimental part would then want an old Tiller guy be it Olson, Spack. I would be OK with Calhoun provided we don't run that option. I would be OK with Brohm. If they hire Skip Holtz I would be less enthused.

The bottom line is all these names are better than our last two. Olson was more qualified than Hope or Hazell but did not get along with Morgan and never got a shot. Same thing with Brock Spack. Morgan wanted people easy for him to control. Not go to the media to talk about needed upgrades. I think Olson and Tiller have long since buried the hatchet (maybe he is advocating as well) so the example from 13 years ago no longer holds water. I think at that time it was to put in years to qualify for an NFL pension.

Totally agree that I would get on board with Olson being hired as the OC as I think he could use the Brees years as a recruiting advantage along with his ties to the NFL.

Would it be out of the question if a HC was already tentatively in place and MBob and this HC are interviewing potential candidates for OC and DC and want to make that announcement all together?

There is no decision yet. As a courtesy to the current staff they wouldn't offer the job to anyone until Saturday around 3:15 p.m. earliest.

For Olson to be a coordinator at Purdue he is looking at a $500K paycut at minimum. He is probably in the lower tier of NFL OCs pay-wise, in the neighborhood of $900K-$1.2 mil. If he does not land the Purdue job he will land another OC job at that going rate; it is just how it works. (Baltimore has already expressed interest) From following NFL writers, he is very well thought of in the Pro football community. So even if the Purdue OC gets bumped to $500K that is a heck of pay cut for the man.

I agree that it would be courteous...but tell that to Fresno State

FIU as well. We are taking baby steps- we never fired a coach mid-season before, well we did fire a baseball coach about 20 years ago for punching (fighting) a player on the spring break trip.

LOL… What?!!
You young turkeys have no clue. The roaring mid-90s! Technically he resigned but they did not give him a choice.

Steve Green
Alexander stepped down from the head coaching position following the 1991 season as the program's all-time wins leader with 407. He was replaced by Steve Green. During Green's tenure, the team qualified for three Big Ten Tournaments (1993, 1995, 1997). However, after a 2–9 start to the 1998 season, Green struck a player in an altercation following a loss to Evansville. He resigned following the altercation. Interim coach Bob Shepherd was the head coach for the rest of the 1998 season, and the team had a 21–20 record during Shepherd's tenure to finish 23–29 overall.
