No Stephens

Isn't in the shortened rotation. Really is the same player as he was when ne arrived at Purdue. Its more about the improvements of the guys ahead of him. They have earned those minutes.

At this point I'm just hoping for enough improvement from him that he provides quality minutes when Cline and Mathias need a breather.

Stephens was really starting to put it all together when he ran into personal difficulties. It takes a while to come back from such a blow, but I think he will be a much improved all around player next year. His shooting is superb and he has gotten to be a much better passer and defender. I am very optimistic over the player he will be next year.

He can help us somewhere down the line if he keeps himself ready to play but right now the team is doing just fine with him out of the rotation. He was afforded every opportunity, more than I felt he deserved, but others are outplaying him. Hopefully he waits for his opportunity and fights to get back in the rotation.

He could be Grayson Allen 2.0 for us in the tourney. Some guy nobody prepares for who just lights a team up off the bench.

Or he could be Grayson Allen of the John Cheaney "send in the goons" variety!:D

He gone unfortunately
Your speculation? Evidence?

He has been very close to many of the current players, and Painter has been very helpful in helping him address some of his problems. That does not point ot a kid leaving. However, he doesn't seem to have the eye of the coach anymore and might have a problem with playing time. Depends a lot on his ego.

Agree. Would have to think his dad being a former player though would help ensure he doesn't make an irrational decision based on his minutes the last 5-6 games of the season. Unless of course ES isn't happy about it either, then all bets are off.

I hope he decides to stay at Purdue for his senior season but at the same time, I could understand if he would decide to go elsewhere for more PT since Mathias and Cline have emerged as good players at the 2 (Mathias was bringing the ball up i.e. the 1 at times last night). There's only so many minutes that can be split at the 2 and they are all basically 2's (although as mentioned, Mathias, even if he isn't an incredible athletic specimen, has very good ball-handling skills for a 2).

No offense to Stephens but Mathias is the better shooter, better passer, and more dependable player. He also does not jack up wild threes.

This x1000. His passing has been razor sharp and led to some great and easy buckets the past 2 games. Not to mention his good shot selection and great shooting of late. Never going to be a 1st team all conference player but he's certainly a 15-20 minute a night guy as a SO and will only get better.

KS on the other hand I think the worst thing he could have done was take time off from a team that he was shaky in the rotation of. Other players stepped up and have appeared to get better from taking his minutes.

KS can transfer, but if he doesn't graduate by August he'll have to sit out a year and play as a RS SR so I think its ignorant to automatically say he's gone.

Mathias and Cline had earned their minutes, no doubt about it.

It's crazy that Stephens doesn't see a lick of action, but it is what it is.

For what it's worth, I think this team needed a shorter rotation.

With that being said, I don't see why he can't take a few of Davis' minutes....30 minutes, and Davis didn't really contribute much (Shields had his way with him all game).

I believe the same...that said, I respect that he returned to finish the season out and that he has continued to support, cheer and encourage his teammates.

Where's he going? Do you really think he wants to sit out for a year to play 1 more? I don't

I agree although the wild card being if he's in position to graduate. If that's the case, I think it would be likely he's gone. I hope he stays, but he may not be interested in being the third string 2.

He doesn't have to be the 3rd string 2 guard. He would be a nice fit for the small ball lineup at the 3.
Good point. He'd have to beat out Basil for that though (which he definitely could). But I expect us to probably play smaller more often next year than we have this year so there are probably minutes there to be had.

Thanks for clarifying and I agree you can speculate if you wish. But I'm not a fan of the way you phrased it if it was a guess.

Heard from a source that he has enough credits to graduate and will do so and transfer. Therefore not having to sit out a year. Only time will tell, but I am starting to believe that he is gone. He is not even playing in mop up time like last night. Too bad because, I thought he would really help this year, but Mathias is now better than he is.

yeah, and quite honestly, I think Basil is probably better suited for the 4. With a spotty jumper, and above average athleticism, I hope we see a lot of Basil at the 4.

Are you people fans? I can't understand posters who make wilder claims about a player making it sound like fact. I also can't understand posters who tear down a kid who is trying his best and has faced some huge personal problems. If you have not seen improvement in this fine young man then please don't give your idiotic opinion that shows you know nothing about the game. I am very proud of the character of each of these young men and how hard they have worked to improve. We obviously have great team chemistry and these young men will continue to become fine people even after their playing days are over. It is very easy for me to root for them and encourage them and I think they will finish well.

Although wouldn't that assume he's taking minutes from Vince? It will be interesting to see how it plays it out. I agree in a small lineup Basil is stuck between a 3/4. I think a lot of it depends on how Taylor develops and how much he can give at the 5.

yeah, good point. It will be interesting to see how the minutes breakdown at the 4 next year, between Swanigan, Vince, Basil and Taylor.

Right. I know how the transfer rule works. I just didn't know if he was in a position to graduate. Most kids aren't after only 3 years. Most of the grad transfers out there are 5th years with the rare exception.

My issue was that people were just saying he was going to transfer, without realizing that graduation is a true barrier to doing so without sitting out.

Sorry I didn't mean imply I knew something as I don't. I was just drinking my coffee and was getting annoying Indiana texts from my brother as I was replying. Unrelenting I may add, I hope we play those boys in the btt

I absolutely think he stays. No question. He's a huge Purdue fan from a big Purdue family.

Have you seen the video of when they dumped water on Mathias? He was as happy as anyone else.

I think he just needs to refocus during the offseason, and he'll be a major contributor next year.
