NJIT v. Purdue Game Thread

Purdue looked like total garbage...if anyone else from NJIT walked off the bus today, Purdue would have been in major trouble for a totally embarrassing loss.

It didn't look like such a bad performance to me, in the end they had a very comfortable lead for most of the second half. Still need to cut down the turnovers and play better defense from the start but when Carsen plays like that this team is dangerous.
Purdue will need a great performance Wednesday but they can win in Louisville for sure.

No kidding , I swear could win by 50 and some would be nit picking

Lynn was an honorable mention all American last year and was incredible. He and NJIT knocked off Michigan last year. Coming home from Cancun after a couple of big wins, I thought we were okay. Carsen, Vince, Biggie, and Haas were pretty good. No one could defend Lynn. Up 19 at one point.

We don"t have that defensive stopper person this year so players like Lynn may do this. But we have more firepower to counteract.

I may have been a little "salty" (not saucy) because of that dang bucket game, but anytime the Boilers can get past one of these games around the holidays is a good thing in my book. Good test next week @ the Yum Yum Palace.....Boilers are going to need to play a much cleaner game and bring the intensity from the opening tip if they want a victory.

It's the fact that after being up 19, Purdue coasted. I'm happy with the win and with most stats. But allowing a team like NJIT to pull within 9 after being up 19 in about 2 1/2 minutes is worrisome. Same problems the program had last year against Iowa and MSU.

Great teaching points but can't allow that to continue to happen.

He's a stat stuffer. He's playing at both ends. Can't wait for him to get accustomed to college ball. :D

He's gonna have his growing pains, but I love that he's not tentative nor showing any backdown and taking it to the opposition.....the stage does not appear to bother him.....refreshing for a freshman.

Also, he's the most "microwave-like" scoring guard Purdue has seen in a while.

Our best two players are still Biggie and Carsen. As they go, we go.

The difference I see from last to this year is that when a good team, or a team with an outrageously hot handed player, has a run on us this season, we continue to score. The last two teams would fold up shop offensively and pray the clock would run out faster.
It was our offense that lost the first round games to Cinci and UALR. NJIT looked just like UALR, but the result did not.
It's just a point of view which may make you feel better about our day.

Offensively for sure. Vincent looks like he is starting to come around.....gonna need him too. The Louisville game will be a really good test on the road.....just about as tough as any conference venue.

Interesting, DG. Part of the theory that even on paper (and on the floor), Purdue is not as strong defensively, but the team may be built better for the tournament (if one is an optimist) because of some of what you highlight......the penetration in the lane is still a little concerning. Also, so far (to me), the Boilers are generally getting better looks this year. Biggie is clearly Gibraltar right now.

Good point and I totally agree. Teams in the past perhaps would have struggled more and probably lose. Other observations from this game is that I feel Cline got more of Dakota's minutes during a stretch in the second half. Nothing against Cline but Dakota is playing very well right now. Also, felt that PJ attacked the basket needlessly (perhaps after watching CE). Didn't cost us but there were a few head scratching moments on why he was trying to do that.

Yes, I thought PJ tried to do too much today. I thought he stuck to Lynn pretty good on defense, but that guy was unstoppable. But on the offensive side of the ball, he forced things too much and took shots when he didn't need too.

Yes. I think offense has become more important lately with rules changes all directed at freeing up the offense. It makes it even harder for a non blue blood to win it all as they generally split up the best offensive talent each recruiting class amongst themselves.
I agree we are not as good defensively as the recent past. But we are so much better offensively already that I have more hope this year than last for a strong finish. Especially with the increase in production from the guards this last three games. With progress through the season this could be the most potent offense I can recall at Purdue.
When you watch Final Four games there is of course good defense, but rarely is that the sole calling card of those teams. They hang their hat on you not being able to stop them.
Biggie looks to me like Hummel if Hummel had been a post player. We often run our offense through Biggie.
