People (all of college sports media) are ripping the NCAA for not having a plan for NIL. “They spent a decade fighting it instead of preparing for it.” This really confuses me. Those fighting for NIL argued for years that athletes should have the same rights as normal students, and normal students have complete freedom to do whatever they want whenever they want. Any plan/rules that would have been implemented or will be implemented would only restrict athletes relative to their peers. It’s actually BS that the current transfer rule is only one-time - normal students (I believe) can transfer as often as they like with no penalty. If you are in favor of NIL, but want guard-rails moving forward, then you are directly contradicting yourself. You either want to treat them like normal students or you don’t. There was never a possible solution to this, contrary to what some may have you believe. Complete freedom is complete freedom. The NCAA knew this.
