I know that Butler will be the Crossroads Classic opponent. I would like to see this past season's B1G regular season champion Boilermakers play last season's ACC regular season champion (North Carolina) in the B1G/ACC Challenge. It's time for a home game in the Challenge as well, since they played at Louisville and at Pittsburgh the past two seasons.

Were there any opponents that Purdue started a home-and-home with this past season? I don't recall any but maybe someone here does.

I read that SEC teams are now either encouraged or required to play non-con opponents with a previous season's RPI of 175 or better, in order to help their SOS and give them a better chance of getting more teams into the NCAA Tournament. I would like to see Purdue adopt that idea as well and have every non-conference opponent be one that had a final RPI of 175 or better for the 2016-2017 season.

Who else would you like to see on the non-con schedule besides Butler?

I would like to see Butler and Notre Dame every year..one at Crossroads and other on schedule with every third year. Butler crossroads, ND home or away...next year ND crossroads, Butler home or away. next year Butler crossroads and ND swapping the home and home to return the favor the third year...same with Butler.

There was a Kansas fan on this board not so long ago that mentioned and upcoming home and home with them. If true, I doubt our NCAA tournament matchup did anything to scare them off.

The Battle 4 Atlantis should provide some good opponents depending on how the brackets fall. Here are the teams:

Arizona - Top 5 in most of the way too early top-25 rankings I've seen
Villanova - Top 10-ish
SMU & Purdue - Fringe Top 25
NC State & Tennessee - Unranked P5 schools
Western Kentucky - Bringing in the #9 ranked class in 2017 according to Rivals thanks to landing the #6 & #43 ranked recruits.
Northern Iowa - Traditionally a quality mid-major

With the Butler game & potential match-up with Villanova, I'm not sure if Purdue will be in consideration for the Gavitt Tip-Off games in '17. If they are, I think Xavier would be the best opponent.

Kentucky. Lewville. South Carolina. UCLA. Top four that would actually mean something.

I would assume we are all but guaranteed a home game in the Big/ACC after going on the road the last 2 years. Teams I would be happy with getting are Duke, UNC and Virginia. I feel we should be viewed as one of the top Big 10 teams next year and would like to draw a top ACC team.

I'd like Purdue and X to start a series. They played a few times in Indy years back. Would like to see a home and home with them.

That's right, they're going to be in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. Thanks for the reminder.

I would like a home and away with a Big12 school - Texas, Kansas or West Virginia.

Wouldn't mind Florida or Missouri either

UCLA was the first that came to mind. People here have talked in the past about it being the annual "Wooden Classic". There would be a ton of story lines for that one.

I would enjoy playing a game against UCLA every year. Louisville and UK would be other great options. UK likely won't be willing to do a home and home game but we could stick it to IU fans if we were willing to do neutral site games with them. UK is always young and typically has some very good athletic talent. Pretty much zero punishment for losing to them but getting the experience and winning would go a long way to improve the perception about Purdue and resume come tourney time.

I do think Calipari is strategic in who he is willing to schedule and not sure he would play us. He sticks to the blue bloods and elite teams who don't have as much to gain as a team like us would by winning. I think that could have played into them not scheduling IU anymore along with other factors. He is trying to play his part in keeping IU from getting back to the top and knows it pisses off their fans. He won't view us the same way but I doubt he wants Painter to see real traction and for Purdue to become a final 4 threat every year with his ongoing desires to pick elite talent out of the state of Indiana.

I'm no fan of Bruce Pearl, yes I know he can recruit, but would love a home and home with his Auburn Tigers every year, and continue too give him a Beatdown every stinking time!!!! Yes!

True, but with the exception of Marquis Teague, what elite talent has Calipari picked out of the state of Indiana since he's been at UK?

I forgot about him (so many one-and-dones there). I guess Calipari's crew has stolen a couple of them.

Anyway, I'm gonna look for the final RPI rankings for 2016-2017 (top 175 opponents) and maybe those interested can write up their preferred schedule. It could be fun.

I would like to see all of next season's pre-conference opponents be comprised out of teams from this group.

Let's look at this past season's pre-conference schedule and see how it looks, RPI-wise:

* = neutral court

Date: Opponent and their final RPI: Outcome:

11/11/16: vs. McNeese State (314) Win

11/14/16: vs. Villanova (4) Loss

11/18/16: vs. Georgia State (105) Win

11/22/16: *vs. Utah State (181) Win

11/23/16: *vs. Auburn (107) Win

11/26/16: vs. NJIT (293) Win

11/30/16: at Louisville (11) Loss

12/3/16: vs. Morehead State (201) Win

12/6/16: *vs. Arizona State (128) Win

12/10/16: vs. Cleveland State (253) Win

12/17/16: *vs. Notre Dame (22) Win

12/19/16: vs. Western Illinois (325) Win

12/21/16: vs. Norfolk State (248) Win

Purdue needs to avoid scheduling the McNeese State's, Utah State's, NJIT's, Morehead State's, Cleveland State's, Western Illinois', and Norfolk State's of college basketball next season.

Here's a mock 2017-2018 non-conference schedule that would be challenging, yet manageable:

# = Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament

$ = B1G/ACC Challenge

* = Crossroads Classic in Indianapolis

Fri. 11/10/17: vs. Green Bay (166)

Mon. 11/13/17: vs. Monmouth (52)

How does that look for a non-conference schedule next season?

Here's a mock 2017-2018 non-conference schedule that would be challenging, yet manageable:

# = Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament

This is a joke, right? Do you really want to lose seven games before we even get into conference play? That would be the hardest non-conference schedule in the history of college basketball. I'm all for testing ourselves during non-conference play, but c'mon. Nothing about that is manageable or realistic.

Are you joking? They wouldn't lose 7 games. It wouldn't even come close to being the toughest non-conference schedule in the history of college basketball. Also, as I mentioned, a couple of those above are total hypothetical/chance opponents (i.e. Villanova and Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis).

Do you want to see Purdue strive to be one of the best with a good, tough schedule or do you want to see them continue to schedule 7 non-conference opponents that end up with RPI's worse than 175? Some people complain about the really bad teams on the schedule and now you're complaining that it will be too hard, lol.

I would like to see all of next season's pre-conference opponents be comprised out of teams from this group.

Let's look at this past season's pre-conference schedule and see how it looks, RPI-wise:

* = neutral court

Date: Opponent and their final RPI: Outcome:

11/11/16 vs. McNeese State (314) Win

11/14/16 vs. Villanova (4) Loss

11/18/16 vs. Georgia State (105) Win

11/22/16 *vs. Utah State (181) Win

11/23/16 *vs. Auburn (107) Win

11/26/16 vs. NJIT (293) Win

11/30/16 at Louisville (11) Loss

12/3/16 vs. Morehead State (201) Win

12/6/16 *vs. Arizona State (128) Win

12/10/16 vs. Cleveland State (253) Win

12/17/16 *vs. Notre Dame (22) Win

12/19/16 vs. Western Illinois (325) Win

12/21/16 vs. Norfolk State (248) Win

Purdue needs to avoid scheduling the McNeese State's, Utah State's, NJIT's, Morehead State's, Cleveland State's, Western Illinois', and Norfolk State's of college basketball next season.

I would like to see all of next season's pre-conference opponents be comprised out of teams from this group.

Let's look at this past season's pre-conference schedule and see how it looks, RPI-wise:

* = neutral court

Date: Opponent and their final RPI: Outcome:

11/11/16 vs. McNeese State (314) Win

11/14/16 vs. Villanova (4) Loss

11/18/16 vs. Georgia State (105) Win

11/22/16 *vs. Utah State (181) Win

11/23/16 *vs. Auburn (107) Win

11/26/16 vs. NJIT (293) Win

11/30/16 at Louisville (11) Loss

12/3/16 vs. Morehead State (201) Win

12/6/16 *vs. Arizona State (128) Win

12/10/16 vs. Cleveland State (253) Win

12/17/16 *vs. Notre Dame (22) Win

12/19/16 vs. Western Illinois (325) Win

12/21/16 vs. Norfolk State (248) Win

Purdue needs to avoid scheduling the McNeese State's, Utah State's, NJIT's, Morehead State's, Cleveland State's, Western Illinois', and Norfolk State's of college basketball next season.

You said avoid playing Utah St. I think I know you mean teams that are in their realm of rpi, but we played them in a preseason tourney. There is really very little we can do to determine our draw in these kind of events. I agree we need to avoid teams who are perennially bad basketball teams such as McNeese St. With this being said though some times you schedule a team, and they turn out to be a much worse team than expected.

Just because a team was ranked in the top 150 last year does not mean they will be any where close to that the following year. Nag suggested playing Valpo next season. They are historically a solid program, but do you think their RPI will be anywhere close to as high as it was without Alec Peters?

I'm all for getting away from total cupcakes, but as a power 5 conference team playing a couple of those each year is not that damaging, assuming you win.

ThreeTwaunMoore and TooPoorToBleedGold, where have you been? I never saw either one of you post a single time during the actual basketball season.

Also, you're arguing against yourself. Valpo would be one of the teams on the schedule next season that would lean more towards being an easier opponent to defeat (i.e. one of the "cupcakes" that you wouldn't mind seeing), yet you're poo-pooing the idea of playing them because they might be worse next season, lol.

Some coaches schedule cupcakes, especially for young teams, so that they can drill what they work on in practice against competition other than themselves. But Purdue will have a lot of veterans next year, so the competition they play should be tougher than, say, 2 years ago.

Why not have it tougher than this past season's schedule as well? I imagine that they will have at least three newcomers getting a decent amount minutes next season, but the majority of the team will be fourth-year seniors (and a third-year junior) that have the ability and experience of winning games in their background.

Another problem is that some of the good teams don't want a home-and-home with Purdue, because Mackey is such a tough place to play. Keady used to talk about this. And as he said, Purdue is not going to play against teams where they dictate all of the terms.

I thought the 2016-17 non-conference schedule looked pretty good when it was first announced. I expected more out of both Utah State and Arizona State.

That said, I agree that Purdue could take more chances in conferences like the Missouri Valley, Mountain West, Colonial, and Atlantic 10. There have to be at least 35 top-175 teams each year among those four leagues. Sure, you could end up with some duds (Utah State this year), but there's more quality depth in those leagues than the MEAC, SWAC, etc.

I wonder if it comes down to money. Purdue has to schedule 8 home non-conference games; I wonder if the low majors are just willing to come to Mackey for less money.

They wouldn't let us do that and we won't play Pitt either here or @ their place. UNC probably but still unknown who's in our favor next year. I want Duke or WF. If we play @WF, well, I don't know if they would boo Haas like Izzone booed Biggie.

When thinking of the acc/big10 challenge....think like ESPN does. If M$U, Wisconsin, even IU with a new coach are so-so, they are still a bigger tv draw than us.

I'd like to see Painter take on some of his former colleagues and also schools. I live near SIU and Painter's old house. It would be great to welcome him back. I'd also love to see a Painter coached team matched up against Weber, Stallings and Zo!

Purdue has already played Pitt at their place (2 seasons ago) under Painter.

rgarlitz, is it a mandatory thing that Purdue has to play 8 non-conference home games? I've never heard that before.

Painter has said in the past that he doesn't like to play against former colleagues unless he knows that they're fine with doing it (Kevin Stallings when he was at Vandy is one example, Linc Darner when he was at Florida Southern is another).

I joined KHC during the season. I'm all for playing a tough non-conference schedule, but the one you suggested is never happening, much like the zone defense you constantly post about. I need a beer.

Which games aren't possible, in your mind?

never say never

Most of the time when zone comes up, I'm responding to someone else that brings it up, so bring it up with them if it bothers you.

You're always the one bringing the zone up lol ... For the games that aren't possible? Nearly all of them? We are never going to play that many good mid-major teams at Mackey. Maybe we could get one of them, but you listed like four. UNC is somewhat believable because of the challenge, but I think we get someone like Virginia.

I don't have a problem with some of the teams you mentioned, like Pitt and WVU (these would require a home-and-home series), but you just can't group them all in one schedule lol ... Again, this has nothing to do with what I want or don't want for Purdue's schedule. I'm just saying a schedule like that is not possible or realistic.

Why can't you? You're not really providing any valid reasons other than it won't happen because it doesn't normally happen. The truth of it is, Purdue HAS had similarly challenging non-conference schedules in its past. One of the best examples is probably Gene Keady's second season at Purdue:

http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/purdue/1982-schedule.html

That nine game non-conference schedule had five teams on it that played in the NCAA Tournament later that season (Tennessee, DePaul, Louisville, Houston, Wake Forest), including two that made it to the Final Four (Louisville, Houston). Purdue had some experienced seniors (Keith Edmonson, Mike "Scooby" Scearce, Kevin Stallings, Jon Kitchel) and a standout sophomore (Russell Cross), but they were not as accustomed to Keady's style of play as most of Painter's players will be to his going into next season. I also believe that next season's team will have more depth than the aforementioned Purdue team, so I think they can avoid the pitfalls that team had in playing a challenging non-conference schedule.

Look, really solid teams aren't exactly blowing Elliot Bloom's phone up wanting to play at Mackey Arena. If you can't wrap your head around that, and why that's the case, I don't know what to tell you. Can someone please back me up on this and confirm that the proposed schedule above is absolutely ridiculous? Anyone?

Purdue has already played Pitt at their place (2 seasons ago) under Painter.

rgarlitz, is it a mandatory thing that Purdue has to play 8 non-conference home games? I've never heard that before.

I don't think so. But, it seems to shake out to about that number most years --- give or take a game or two, depending on holiday tournaments, the ACC challenge, and so fourth.

My point was, that Purdue schedules a significant number of non-conference home games every year. Are the Northern Iowas and Daytons of the world asking for a lot more to come to Mackey than schools like Norfolk State and MD Eastern Shore? I don't know. I just wonder if that's a factor.
