Purdue really wasn't on board with the first Nike look.

Along with having stars from the state flag (for some reason), it also introduced a new Purdue hammer logo. And Purdue didn't want to have to add that to its two existing logos.

“Because then, we’d have to trademark that logo and then use it,” Mike Shandrick said. “Did we really need it? The way we were looking at it too was that we already have the train and the (motion) P, so we’re unique in that we have two main logos, one really isn’t secondary to the other – although maybe you could say that the train is secondary to the P, but not hugely secondary because it’s used a lot – so now we need another logo?

"We’re trying to get an identity of being Purdue, focusing in on Purdue, and not to be screwing with multiple logos.”
