New recruit

He is a CG so would hope so.

Speaking of, I like that Colvin has been dribbling and taking some midrange shots lately. I remember watching his high school film and he had a nice middie. Wish he could learn to do some booty ball and bully smaller guards.
Wish he’d be given the opportunity by the staff to do that

I think you'll see most schools hold 1 or 2 scholarships back for a late transfer add so it's possible they'll give those to a walk-on but the issue is situations will change annually. A guy might get a scholarship his sophomore year but they might give it away his junior year.

Will scout teams be a thing? That's where you may end up finding these guys. But they won't be able to dress if on the scout team.
I’m guessing the walk ons will be the scout team like you mentioned

Do I understand correctly that the total roster size can only be 15? Don’t we currently have 3-4 walkons? What happens to them? Do you just say, thanks for the memories? And say sorry, you are no longer on the team?

But we don’t need them, right Wule?
My thoughts are a team should never over stock one position at the expense of of leaving another position weak and empty. How many combo guards does one team need? And how many quality small forwards / wings do we have?

To me, we need to focus on recruiting Some forwards rather than continuing to recruit and add more combo guards. Regardless of how great they are. What good is a player if he never has an opportunity to play?

Currently after Loyer and smith leave, we have Harris, Colvin, cox and Benter. And we have commitments from West and Ertel. Our only small forward is Heide. Do we really need to be recruiting another combo guard?

I guess we can never have enough combo guards.

It’s been speculated a certain combo guard may transfer. And what’s the speculation of the reason why? Like Newman, the player has a lot of talent but receives less than 15 minutes of playing time. If you want to add another combo guard to this roster, that’s great. But in doing so, playing time for all guards will be limited and someone will leave looking for an opportunity to play.

Yep

Correct

Who are you talking about? If it’s Colvin, he’s at 17 mpg and him and Heide have been playing/shooting better the last 5 games. Not sure why he d transfer. He has an opportunity to be a key piece to a NC contender next year (if everyone is back which I believe will be the case).

on at least 1 mid range shot he could have taken 1 more dribble and dunked it easily. I'm waiting for THAT to kick in and then we'll have something good. Every year people forget that lots of players don't get 'good' until they are upperclassmen.

Yep

Correct

My thought is one of Harris, Myles or Cox will leave. I say that because I believe both Loyer and Smith will return. And that will leave Harris, Myles, cox, Benter , and newcomer West fighting for the 3 spot and that 1 minute Smith gives his backup. That’s 5, count them 5 players fighting for 1 spot and 20 minutes of backing up Loyer. Do you truly believe those 5 players will actually all be happy fighting for one position. That is next year, ok, the following year, Loyer and Smith will be gone opening up two spots. However. The team will be adding Ertel. That’s 6 players fighting for 3 spots. Looking around with the Transfer portal being what it is. And the knowledge that at least 4 guards from Purdue have left via that portal in the past 5 years, it’s logical to assume that one of the guards named about who loses out. Will jump into the portal for an opportunity to actually play.

I also believe Jacobsen will play allowing tkr to shift to the 4. That pushes Heide to becoming a role player. And also pushes Berg and Burgess to being role players.

I believe it would awesome if everyone had a love fest and wanted to stay. But reality says it’s not going to happen.

I looked at Walters and he had a love for recruiting DBs. He recruited a lot of them and they were good. But not all of them could play. And Walters ignored several other positions creating a depth issue. And you saw the overall result.

I then return to Purdue basketball and see Painter recruiting all of these guards and totally ignoring Small forwards. Small forwards do actually exist! I believe it’s a mistake to totally ignore that position. Some day painter may even want to play a small forward at the 3 position. But he won’t have that luxury if all he ever does is recruit guards and big men.

Harris, cox, Colvin and Benter will all play backup Loyer and share the 3. Benter wont play much next year, unless he’s as good as oldboiler says he is. West may RS or if he’s as good as we think he is, he may be able to back up smith or push for mins at the 2 or 3. Don’t think any of them will leave.

Colvin, Harris and Cox are set to take the 1-3 spots and split with west, Benter and ertel/whomever else we get.

Heide can back up the 4 and give us a smaller ball lineup, but already is a role player. Berg is probably gone and burgess will backup DJ/split with him at the 5.

What’s your proof here?

Are you comparing Walters to Painter?

The game has been shifting to position less basketball.

Yes they won't be on the team unless the team is somehow short a spot on the 15 man roster.

What you might see is allowing a few walk-ons to practice but they won't be able to actually suit up for games or be a part of the team.

And quite frankly if you have 15 scholarship players I'm not sure there's even any value for a former walk-on at a practice.
